System Outage Update 6/12/23

Good afternoon!

Did you know that today is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day?  I think I just gave you a built-in reason to leave your desks and find a cookie. You’re welcome. Unless of course you are allergic to peanuts, then you should definitely NOT celebrate, and instead can enjoy National Falafel Day or National Jerky Day which are coincidentally also today.  However, if you eat all three of those things at once then you might find yourself celebrating National Call Your Doctor Day which is tomorrow.  It’s true!  I swear, you just can’t make this stuff up. Come to think of it, I probably could…but what would be the fun in that? 😉

Ok, on with the actual updates I have for you from TSS.  Please read carefully.

Listserv

The Listserv service that was destroyed in the ransomware incident has been reenabled. The open faculty distribution list has tested successfully, however since this is an open opt-in list, anyone needing to be a part of this list will need to go through the opt-in process again to repopulate.  This service will be published for use this week and more information will be coming soon about how to opt-in.

Accounts Payable (AP) Check Printing

Due to the ransomware incident, we have been receiving outside assistance with check printing in the AP department.  We are happy to announce the check printing capabilities for the AP department will be restored by the beginning of next week.

Desktop File Recovery Process Update

The desktop file recovery process has seen some significant progress.  We are now at a point where we can shift to dealing with full departments to make sure we don’t miss anyone who did not put in a TSS ticket. Departments may receive a message from TSS requesting a list of employees to make sure we do not skip over anyone.

To view the status of your file recovery request please view it here:File Recovery Status.xlsx

Desktop Restoration

The next phase of desktop restoration is ready to begin.  We will be going over departmental technology needs that were supplied to TSS last month.  More to come on this soon.

  • Important RE: Apple (Mac) Desktops: With regard to the desktop restoration phase, anyone with a Mac desktop in their office should begin preparations for TSS to reimage their machine sometime this summer. We are asking for all Mac desktop users to power on their machine, connect to the Wi-Fi and save off any files they wish to keep to their Microsoft OneDrive location or an external drive.  We want to make sure everyone saves their documents before their device is reimaged.
    • THIS IS ONLY FOR MAC DECKTOP USERS.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MAC, DO NOT TURN ON YOUR DESKTOP UNTIL INSTRUCTED!

Phone System Update

The Teams phones project is moving along, and we will start porting phone numbers next week.  We will be starting with the TSS department and working our way through all departments after thorough testing.  Expect more news on this soon!

Network Restoration

The restoration project has reached a point where we are ready to begin rebuilding servers on the network.  The network foundation work is complete, server restoration will be starting this week. This step in the process is critical and once complete, we will be able to start the work to reestablish databases and connections to other systems.

That’s all for now. Enjoy your evening!

Press Release: U.S. Department of State IDEAS Program Awards Shoreline Community College Grant to Build Study Abroad Capacity

(Shoreline, Wash., June 9, 2023) Shoreline Community College (Shoreline)

Shoreline Community College (SCC) is one of 34 U.S. colleges and universities in 28 U.S. states to be awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program, which aims to develop and expand study abroad programs around the world. “I am so excited about this opportunity for our community. One of our goals is to better connect with our external and local international partners to best serve the diverse northern Seattle area. Opportunities like this not only support that goal but also provide wonderful learning opportunities for our faculty and students,” said SCC President Dr. Jack Kahn.

Of the 34 U.S. colleges and universities, eight are community colleges and 13 are minority-serving institutions. The selected proposals will develop new international partnerships, train faculty and staff, internationalize curriculum, engage diverse students in study abroad, broaden the destinations where U.S. students study, and create virtual and hybrid exchanges.

“Increasing and diversifying U.S. students going abroad for educational opportunities, as well as diversifying the places where they study, is a State Department priority,” said Lee Satterfield, Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs. “This year’s recipients reflect the true greatness of America – our diversity – as almost 25 percent represent two-year institutions, 40 percent represent minority-serving institutions, and 25 percent represent rural-serving institutions.”

This IDEAS Program Award will allow Shoreline Community College to develop a new study abroad program for Washington community college nursing students. The new program leverages a long-standing and successful study/service-learning abroad program in dental hygiene, led by SCC and our non-profit partner in Seattle and Bolivia, Smiles Forever.

“We are delighted to be one of the eight community colleges in the country to receive this prestigious award! Study abroad programs have been particularly impacted by the pandemic and it is encouraging to see the federal government’s support in supporting their revival. U.S. students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, benefit tremendously from these opportunities,” said Samira Pardanani, Associate Vice President, International Education & Global Engagement.

This study abroad program will be unique among community college nursing programs, as study abroad experiences are largely inaccessible for nursing students. Bolivia is also a traditionally underrepresented location for study abroad programs amongst US students. According to the Open Doors 2022 report, in 2020-2021, Bolivia received fewer than 79 US study abroad students. Colleen Ferguson, Special Project Lead, International Engagement had this to say about the program, “With the IDEAS Program Award, nursing faculty will be supported in developing a new service-learning program to Bolivia that will allow our nursing students the opportunity to practice their unique skills and gain valuable cross-cultural experience.”

Since 2016, the IDEAS Program has awarded 179 grants to 173 U.S. colleges and universities in 49 states and territories to create, expand, and diversify their U.S. study abroad programs in 71 countries across all world regions. In addition to the IDEAS grants, the program offers opportunities for international educators at U.S. colleges and universities to participate in free virtual and in-person study abroad capacity-building activities.

The IDEAS Program is a program of the U.S Department of State with funding provided by the United States Government and supported in its implementation by World Learning. Campus Updates 6/8/23

Good afternoon folks.

As the college gets more comfortable with a participatory recommendation process, I wanted to update you all when items have been approved by the council, ET, and myself.

A recent proposal came to the College Council to recommend that (a) all “land structures” per this map (as prepared by our architectural team, below) would be named in honor of the indigenous tribes in the area and (b) Any new Wayfinding for the College would be tied to the previously begun “Tree Campus USA” project and provide additional funding to ensure its completion. Both items were passed unanimously by College Council, and the Executive Team and I approved the recommendations.

We are working with tribal representatives now and will continue to do so to derive the actual names- more to come—please email if you have suggestions of folks to speak with. At the moment we have been working with colleagues from the Tulalip tribe!

This is a mock-up of an approved design idea for a new way of campus way finding

Last week I spent most of my time at the 75th NAFSA International Education Annual Conference & Expo which was held May 30–June 2 in Washington, DC.  The theme was “Inspiring an Inclusive Future.”  It was my first time at this conference, and it was great.  I met a ton of new colleagues I am hoping we can work with to expand our international work – I also got to spend some quality time with some quality people in our IE program- Samira, Lisa, Yushin and Cynthia. They even bought me gelato for my birthday! It was June 1st 😊

Speaking of the birthday my wife bought me a bunch of plants in a kind of “vertical garden display” for our deck. So, I am supposed to water them after-work, “relax,” and nurture them. I will certainly try to relax- I’ll keep you posted on what grows.

Best,

Jack

Planning & Institutional Effectiveness (PIE)

You can view current and archived Daily Enrollment Reports here: Daily Enrollment Reports (Public):

Caveats: it is still early for Fall enrollment and due to ransomware, we do not have access to past year same-day comparison (even if we did, fraudulent students in Summer/Fall 2022 would make this a bad comparison).

A link to these reports always can be found at the Shoreline Support Center > Employee > Daily Enrollment Report.

Grants Office

We have been awarded a $130,000 SSEH (Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness) renewal grant from SBCTC to continue to address students’ basic needs. The grant will connect students with case managers, navigators, and the Benefits Hub to help them access resources such as rent assistance, hygiene supplies, food support, and transportation. Kudos to the collaborative effort of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Office; Student Support & Success; and the Grants Office.
