Student Support Services/Welcome Desk 

Beginning next week, we’ll have some transitions in the welcome desk staffing across campus. Fanaye Ashagari will be transitioning from the FOSS desk over to the PUB desk. We so appreciate all of the time and care she’s poured into students at the FOSS desk over the years and are glad she’ll be continuing with the team. We’ll have a new team member at the FOSS welcome desk full-time, providing customer service and processing admissions applications. Her name is Melanie, and I hope you’ll say hello if you find yourself near the welcome desk next week. 

Mail Services 

As operations and coverage of the Mail Services Department continues among different employees, we need your help as we adjust our mail and package handling and delivery procedures.  

To help complete our mission to timely send and receive interoffice mail, USPS mail, and other carrier packages, please pick up and drop off your items at the Mail Services Office (Room 9100) located at the external loading dock on the ground floor of the FOSS Building.

Foundation 

The Foundation is excited to announce that Jaime Puracal has joined the Foundation Board of Directors. Jaime has over 20 years of experience in construction management. We are excited for her to be a part of the Foundation and look forward to utilizing her skills and talents to build philanthropic support for SCC!  

The Foundation completed a robust audit by an independent auditing firm for fiscal year 22/23 and is psyched to announce it was a “clean” audit – A clean audit signifies that an independent auditor has found no significant issues or material misstatements in the financial records. The 23/24 audit has begun, and we expect it to be completed by late July. Once that audit is complete, the Foundation’s finances will be officially caught up and “recovered” from the March 2023 ransomware attack.  

Scholarships – Students were notified of their scholarship status last week. Students who were offered scholarships have until Monday 6/2 to submit their acceptance letters.  

Graduation – new this year… Some graduates may be wearing white cords as part of their regalia. Graduates wearing single white cords are recipients of a Shoreline Community College Foundation scholarship. These scholars worked diligently to earn this honor, demonstrating a commitment to their education and future aspirations. These cords serve as a testament to the students who wear them as well as the generosity of our donors, whose contributions empower students to achieve their dreams, reinforcing the transformative power of education and community investment.

Well, it’s been another busy one at SCC but a lot to celebrate this week.   

On Friday I was able to attend the UW undergraduate research symposium where we had 21 (yes I said 21) undergraduate students presenting their honors research posters.  Apparently 6000 students in total took part in the event.  I was able to see some of our students “in action” as well which was a real treat.  Their confidence and excitement for learning was palpable and certainly mentored by Michael Overa who coordinates the program (and this opportunity) and faculty like Rachel david (who I ran into at the event supporting her students).   

I was also able to attend the SIFF opening night which was a blast.  The film was really fun and of course connecting with the community even more fun.  I’m so glad we can host events like this on campus, particularly those that directly support our academic programs.   

I was also able to attend *some* of several great events including the Interdisciplinary Studies presentation “The Power of Language and Empathy,” where students learned from multiple disciplines and engaged in a great presentation. Thank you to our faculty and deans for coordinating!  I also attended the wonderful Gallery: AFA Thesis Exhibition Artist Reception and met some of the artists, and I took in about 20 minutes of the great Exploring the Pathway: Biomedical Sciences event (featuring industry leaders and faculty).  Sadly, I was triple booked and only caught some of all of these great events.   

Yesterday, we were thrilled to have representatives from the Tlingit & Haida on campus discussing how our region can best support them (and each other). Alaska Natives make up a large proportion of our indigenous students in this region of WA state (and at SCC) and with a new office just up the street, collaboration becomes even easier. We also had DEI leaders from Everett Community College, Cascadia College, Edmonds College, and Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Can’t wait for next steps! Thank you to Brian Ramos and Alejandra Salgado for making this all happen here. 

Weekly work has been focused on the budget and trying to manage next steps.  Several of us listened to Governor Ferguson’s presentation yesterday and were pleased that we do indeed have a budget.  We do not yet know the impact on us and are waiting for guidance from the state.  We expect to know more soon.  I will keep you posted as we know more.  Here is an article on the topic:  Gov. Printing Services    

Printing Services will be closed Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday, May 28, 29, & 30^th respectively, and will reopen on Monday, June 1st.  Please plan accordingly and contact Greg Jensen via email or phone at (206) 546-4674 if you need assistance with your printing needs. 

Technology Support Services (TSS) 

Starting this summer, TSS will begin migrating student email accounts from Google to our Microsoft platform to enhance the technical experience for our students and ensure optimal support and management of student accounts. As part of this change, student email addresses will shift from @go.shoreline.edu to @shoreline.edu. Emails sent to the old addresses will be automatically redirected to the new ones.  

This transition is necessary for several key reasons, including: 

• Google’s discontinuation of unlimited free accounts for students 

• Reduced storage capacity on Google accounts 

• Enhanced systems management capabilities available through Microsoft 

In light of Google’s policy change, it will also be necessary to decommission older Gmail @go.shoreline.edu accounts. TSS has already begun notifying affected users and will work with alumni to help them migrate their data to a personal account of their choice. 

Due to the significant amount of data and configuration work involved, the migration process will begin in the Summer 2025 quarter, with the official go-live date projected for Winter 2026. All student emails and data will be preserved during this transition. 

To support this transition, TSS will provide comprehensive documentation and training materials for all students, faculty, and staff who have Gmail accounts ending in @go.shoreline.edu. Additional notifications and updates will be shared as we approach the transition period.

Foundation/Advancement 

Scholarship Update: We are finalizing scholarship awarding this week. This year we are giving out more than 150 scholarships with a minimum award amount of $1,000! 

Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback on the new scholarship process. We’re happy with the results so far and feeling optimistic as we smooth out additional details. If you are a reader, advisor, instructor, etc. and have other thoughts, please send them to Kara at khaney@shoreline.edu.  

And once again, thank you to everyone who helped with reading scholarships. Your help is critical to getting these scholarship funds to students. You’re the best! 

Alumni Update: The 60th Anniversary Open House was a wonderful reminder of the strong bonds within our community! We loved seeing all the proud SCC Alumni join the Networking Panel and Alumni Reception.   

As we continue to build our alumni program, we invite you to support this initiative by sharing alumni and former faculty contact lists with Taisa at twelhasch@shoreline.edu. Our goal is to keep alumni engaged through e-newsletters highlighting campus events, student stories, and networking opportunities. Hello all, hope you are doing well.  

It’s been another crazy week here – I Imagine for you as well.   

Last Thursday we had our amazing 60^th anniversary!  This was such an amazing event.  It was great seeing faculty talks, alumni, and all kinds of representation of our institution.  The community seemed to have a great time as well.  Thanks to ALL who helped coordinate and a special thanks to Wendy Coates, Cat Chiappa, and our donors! 

On Wednesday, Megan Tucker, Wendy Coates, and I presented to the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce to discuss who we are, our challenges, and how the Chamber can continue to help us.  It was a good-sized meeting with a lot of engagement from the community.  We collected several names of folks who have ideas for internships and jobs for our students, which is great!  We went “old school” and had people write their emails on a notebook (gasp!).  We survived without a QR code. 

This week I am working on budget stuff, moving policy work forward, and trying to improve some items for our participatory governance next steps in the fall.  Hope to see some of you at the food truck later this afternoon.

At the April 29, 2025 meeting, College Council unanimously approved updates to indicators of mission fulfillment:  

1. The College’s “commitment to . . . community engagement” will be measured by the number of Foundation-sponsored events offered to the internal and/or external community and  

2. The target for “enrichment of . . . our local . . . communities” will be to maintain or increase $100M in an annual economic impact.  

Finally, College Council unanimously approved a mission fulfillment threshold of 70%. If 70% of aggregated indicators of mission fulfillment are scored as target met or adequate progress (within 5% points of target), then the mission has been fulfilled (at least minimally).

This will be a brief update since we have our 60^th anniversary celebration today!  See you there!

Happy (late) Cinco de Mayo! So glad we were able to represent Shoreline Community College at Latino Educational Training Institute’s first community event at their new location! Ryan Aiello, Shanon Ehmke-Reedy, Jessica Strickland, and Liz Agapito had a great time – mariachi, piñata (some of these kids are pretty intense!), great food and community – we even got a shoutout.  I did get warned that the red sauce was hot but as my friends know – Prefiero que la salsa sea picante!

I also really enjoyed our Day of Learning. Over 300 employees spending time together getting updates, being inspired by wonderful talks like Dr. Gerry Ebalaroza-Tunnell’s Gracious Anger and Dr. J’s History of DEI at SCC, celebrating faculty & staff milestones, eating lunch (of course!), and preparing for the Americans with Disabilities Act Title II Updated Requirements to “up our accessibility game” for 2026

Great seeing everyone!!!

College Council unanimously approved splitting the Communication and Advancement Council into two Councils.  Wendy Coates will be the X-Officio of the Advancement Council and Veronica Zura will be the X-Officio of the Communications Council.  This was approved by ET and President Kahn. 

College Council unanimously approved moving Policy 1014 to DEIA advisory for additional feedback.  There was no feedback at the Council meeting.

60^th Open House TODAY! 

WOW – so many thanks to everyone on campus who has worked so hard to make this event wonderful. Please be sure to take some time and enjoy the program – especially the Keynote and Cake from 6-7 in the MDR! We have some great speakers…including a faculty member who taught Accounting at SCC in 1966!  

Nursing Program 

The Shoreline Nursing Program is excited to share that our part-time program expansion has been approved by the Washington State Board of Nursing. The first expanded cohort of 32 students will begin in Fall 2025. 
 
This substantive change also includes many improvements to reduce attrition and better serve the unique needs of the part-time nursing student.

Events and News 

Hey folks, hope you are having a good week.  My apologies that my introductions haven’t been as engaging lately. The last several weeks have been pretty status quo for the most part on my end, working on the budget projections, policy work, etc.    

I did have one update I wanted to share – The Conference Committee proposal was given to Governor Ferguson on Sunday.  This committee is a group of legislators who attempt to bring together the budget proposals of the House & Senate to satisfy their colleagues and the requests of the governor.  

The current (Conference Committee) version of the budget for Shoreline Community College is a better version for us, with a projected $700,000 ongoing loss (vs. the $1.1M – 1.8M reduction range discussed previously).  The final outcome could be better or worse of course, but this is really encouraging.  We have been vigilant across the state working with our legislative representatives and believe that this work has had an impact on these current decisions.

International Education 

The ‘Social Determinants of Health in Ecuador’ program – a 1-credit course with a 10-day travel program – is a ‘Go’!  

Sponsored in-part by a U.S. Department of State IDEAS grant, this study and service abroad program for nursing students is a pilot program for Shoreline. Six students, plus program lead instructors Wendy Hill and Carolyn Nelson, and associate dean LeAnn De Luna, will explore the challenges of health care delivery in Ecuador, and the various public policy solutions that brought Ecuador from a healthcare equity and accessibility world-wide rating of #111, to a rating of #20, in just 20 years.  The travel program departs June 20.
