Campus Updates 9/27/24

Events and News

Hey hey folks- first week of classes are here, and what a great start!  Convocation was a great event last week.  I really enjoyed reconnecting with faculty and attending Opening Week sessions.  Also, wow- those food trucks were good!  Thank you so much to Veronica Zura and Ben Weng for coordinating the week’s events.  I can’t wait to welcome back more faculty!  I also want to say a huge congratulations to our annual award winners:

  • Classified Star of the Year: Janel Middleton (Enrollment Services)
  • Admin of the Year: Yushin Wung (International Education)
  • Exceptional Faculty Award Winners:
    • Nicole Buyagawan (Ethnic Studies)
    • Wendy Hurley (Mathematics)
    • Zach Mazur (Visual Arts)

Thank you to the faculty and staff that attended our first reworked open house as part of Opening Week! This Guided Pathways event brought new students together with faculty and staff and provided opportunities for students to learn about the pathways possible at the college and… pizza and prizes as well! Ryan Aiello, Mari Cosen, Jill Marquis and team did a great job taking us to the next level on this one!

Did you all see this proclamation by President Biden about API week?  Thank you to our new director Dr. Scott Kurashige for reminding me to bring it to your attention! This is what it said:

“I call on public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that acknowledge the many ways these institutions and their graduates contribute to our country.”

Make sure you also check out the WAVES Fall Welcome/Mid-Autumn Festival Open House on Oct. 2nd next week.

As mentioned in last week’s memo I want to update you on progress with the Office of Financial Management (OFM) issue.  This week:

  1. The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) unanimously approved a resolution to encourage the state to “offset the recovery of the over-funding” (meaning that if we have to return *this* funding that they should substitute the amount from another budget source.
  1. The SBCTC (with President representation) met with OFM to express our concern.  OFM did not respond with any solutions at this time.
  1. The Presidents are meeting next week during our regularly scheduled meeting to strategize work with presidents and Board members across the state – this will need to be a legislative charge, and we will need to work closely with legislators to have an impact.
    • We intend to be very active in that effort.

In the meantime, keep your focus on student learning on helping students meet their goals, because that is why we are here.  I will continue to keep you posted with updates as I reeive more information.

See you next week!

Cheers,

Jack

Accreditation

  • Our institutional accreditor, the NW Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), requested that we write an article for their newsletter since our Mid-Cycle accreditation visit in April went so well!
  • Read the article here: “From a Culture of ‘Why do it?’ to ‘Let’s do it!’ – Lessons Learned on Creating a Culture of Learning Outcomes Assessment,” September 24, 2024.

Enrollments:

As of today (Thursday, 9/26), enrollments are up compared to last fall! The daily enrollment report is open to all employees here.

Communications and Marketing

Please stop by our offices (in the 1000 Building) and grab your 60th anniversary notepad.  We gave them out at Convocation but printed enough for all employees to have one, so if you were out or virtual that day come take one.  A big thank you to Mia for the design!

Printing Services

Printing Services will be closed from Wednesday, Oct. 2nd, through Friday, Oct. 4th, and will reopen on Monday, Oct. 7th.  Please plan accordingly and contact Greg Jensen via email or phone at (206) 546-4674 if you need assistance with your printing needs.

Foundation:

Please note, in an effort to streamline services and minimize sending students to multiple offices, all Emergency Assistance goes through the Benefits Hub (Yay! BH Staff!!) including tuition requests. Please do not send students seeking emergency aid to the Foundation office. The Benefits Hub has limited funds for tuition assistance.  A student must have an emergency, extenuating circumstances if they are requesting assistance for tuition through benefits hub.

The student will need to complete an e-aid application and indicate why they need tuition assistance along with why they need e-aid.  Their application will be reviewed, and funding will be awarded case by case.  Link to e-aid information and application: Emergency Funding | Shoreline Community College

All scholarship funds for 24/25 and Fall 24 have been disbursed. Students seeking scholarship funding should be referred to https://www.shoreline.edu/foundation/scholarships.aspx for application information and timing.

Anyone wanting to help with our annual Giving Table Luncheon on November 1 from 11:30 – 12:00 is invited to reach out to Wendy Coates or Kara Haney.

Guided Pathways:

Thank you for all of the great support as we’ve introduced our new Guided Pathways Core Team during Opening Week! We have created a lot of positive momentum as we shift into Fall term, and we feel deep gratitude for the work of everyone who has contributed to our Guided Pathways efforts over the past few years.

As a reminder, we have chosen five priorities to focus our work this year. Each aligns with specific element of our Equity-Centered Strategic Plan:

  • Make Education Planning easy and transparent for our students. (A8, A9, A10)
  • Ensure that every new student is welcomed onto their Shoreline Pathway through mandatory entry advising. (A8, B3)
  • Give every student tools for exploring career paths. (A9)
  • Center equity in our teaching practices. (C5)
  • Build data-rich tools to support decision-making. (A1, B1)

We’ll be inviting faculty to join in planning and implementing each of these priorities throughout the year. Look for a Director of Guided Pathways (a.k.a. Belle Lamb) coming soon to a Division Meeting near you! In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out to blamb@shoreline.edu – and don’t forget to ask Belle how her horse is doing. Pics provided on request.

Cheers,

Belle and the GP Core Team

Events and News

Well folks, it’s been “a week”.

This week began with the notice from OFM (please see memo last Friday and another this Thursday).  It has taken up much of my time in meetings and planning.

One highlight this week was chatting with Representative Cindy Ryu, representatives from Life Science Washington, and our very own Ben Weng and Dalila Paredes.  We chatted about our great biotech program and how we might collaborate to work together to see more students completing our programs.  We will be working with LS Washington and folks from industry to help identify and reduce barriers.  More on this exciting progress soon.

Looking forward to convocation at Convocation on Thursday!

Cheers,

Jack

Accreditation

  • Our Accreditation page reflects that the sanction of warning was removed by our institutional accreditors based on the April 2024 Mid-Cycle report and visit!  The accreditors said it was not expected for a college to get a sanction lifted in just one year’s time.
  • This positive outcome reflects the countless hours of hard work done by so many across the College.
  • Special thanks to: the Accreditation Committee and additional contributors to the accreditation report (as listed on pgs. 4-5).
  •   The ~70 employees who were interviewed by the accreditors, as well as those who helped prepare for and support those meetings.
  •  We now are in Year 4 of our seven year accreditation cycle with reports due each year. Our next scheduled accreditation visit will be fall 2027.
  • We now have just two accreditation recommendations, in which we are substantially in compliance with our accreditation standards but need to demonstrate improvement.

Campus Updates 9/12/24

Events and News

Hey folks—I hope you all are doing well. It’s been a busy week as we get closer to the start of fall term.  I started off the end of last week meeting with our K-12 partners to discuss what was going well, and ways we can work together to improve how we enroll, register, and serve students from the district.  It was great to have Ben Weng, Ryan Aiello and Brian Ramos meet their team, begin to forge valuable relationships, and brainstorm ideas.  I imagine we will see a lot of positive steps come from this introductory meeting.  More soon!

The weekend included a great event I was happy to attend. The first day of the Tibetan Language and Culture school kicked off right here at Shoreline Community College. I gave some introductory remarks and started by asking the kids what they think happened here at the College.  They knew it was a college, and then shared what topics they thought students might learn—math, history, and science came up as well as “notebooks.” I’ll need to check with the Faculty Senate whether that has come through with the new curriculum.  It was fun- the kids are so cool and engaged.  We are very lucky to have this collaboration with the Tibetan Association of Washington.

On Monday Greg Cranson and I met with the Shoreline Police department, and I had the pleasure of meeting their new Captain Brian Angelo. You may know this already, but we get together regularly with them to discuss security, our overall relationship, event planning etc.   We also discussed how we will be getting a new police chief etc.  The police department has been very invested in meeting and planning with us regularly, so that continues to be a really great partnership.

The past few days have been spent working on various projects for the strategic plan and in other areas.  I met with the Participatory Governance Task Force to plan a presentation for Opening Week, met with ET members in 1:1’s, with AVP Samira to discuss strategies to increase Interantional enrollment we are employing this year. I also attended a couple WACTC Presidents meetings and completed a training in ET on campus emergency response (which will be shared with campus soon as well).

It’s been a productive week- hope yours has been too!
Cheers,

Jack

Events and News

Hey folks hope all is well!  I was out last week visiting beautiful Banff, Alberta Canada.  I had never been there before, and WOW- is it beautiful!  At times I felt like I was on another planet.  I would say it was a bit tough during “tourist season” with so many other people around and on trails the same time we were, but we found ways of finding some quieter spaces.

Since I just got back Monday, a lot of my time has been spent playing catch-up from the mountain of emails, as well as completing some required trainings. I did have a great meeting Wednesday with Dr David May, College President for Bellevue College.  He got a tour of campus (and was very impressed with our Cedar building facilities as well as with both our auto programs and leaders (Rashawn and Gary most notably!).  We were chatting about some potential partnering cross-college—as I often say- keep on the lookout!

Cheers,

Jack

Do you know a fundraiser or development person? We are still looking to fill our Annual Manager role. Refer a friend!!

Kudos to the Financial Aid team – they awarded approximately $62,500.00 of donor funded FAFSA Gap money to 116 students! These funds helped cover student expenses like rent and childcare. A quick survey of other colleges in WA showed that only 1 other school provided this kind of assistance during the FAFSA delays. Thank you to our generous donors who help keep our students in school.

I was out last week and didn’t get the chance to say “THANK YOU” to everyone who came out to the Mariners Game! What a fund night, and what a great ballgame! I can’t wait to try it again…Maybe the Kraken?

Printing Services

Two updates:

1) Due to the wired network restoration in Building 2000, Printing Services cannot complete print job requests through the Storefront portal at this time. Greg can make copies from hardcopy documents. Storefront services will be restored by Wednesday, August 28th

2) Printing Services will be closed from Tuesday, September 3rd through Friday, September 6th and will reopen on Monday, September 9th.

Please plan accordingly and contact Greg Jensen via email or phone at (206) 546-4674 if you need assistance with your printing needs.

Facilities and Capital Projects

Bayley Construction, the contractor for the Bracken (STEAM) Building, will need to shut down and relocate the building 2200 electrical switch gear.  There will be no electricity to buildings 1800, 1900, 2100, and 2300 starting at 5:30pm on Friday, 8/23 through 6:00am on Monday, 8/26.  The electrical switchgear will be back online, and power will be restored to these buildings by 6am on Monday, 8/26.  If any mechanical or electrical issues occur during this shutdown, Bayley has backup generators in place to supply power to these buildings on 8/26.  For Staff and Faculty that work in these buildings past 5:30pm on 8/23, please work with your supervisor to plan for either remote work or a different workspace on campus.  Please contact Kimberlee Clark, Director of Facilities and Capital Projects, if you have any questions.

Technology Support Services (TSS)

TSS would like to first thank everyone for your attention and participation in the Password Reset Process that was initiated last week.  Through this activity, we were able to complete very important background tasks necessary to move forward with many of our ongoing projects. We understand that some users were not prompted to reset their passwords, however over the next few weeks, you will be required to reauthenticate your Microsoft Office applications.  To avoid any potential issues TSS recommends that anyone who hasn’t reset their password during this reset process, please refer to the attachment in Jason Brandon’s 8/20/2024, 4:09 pm (approximate time) email to reset your password.

TSS will be moving forward with additional printing options for the campus on Thursday (8/22). All employees will receive a Printing PIN code via email from ‘shorelinecc.ricohcopiers@shoreline.edu’ that will allow access to print out your documents from the Print Queue (please see example screenshot within Jason Brandon’s 8/20/2024, 4:09 pm (approximate time) email). Printing will then be capable by emailing your documents to the designated printer email address.  Direct printing from your device will also be activated for those that have been reconnected to the wired network. The printout can then be retrieved on any Ricoh printer across campus using your Printing PIN code. More information and instructions will be supplied on Thursday.
