Hello folks! Hope all is well. This one is going to be short. Last Saturday I was able to attend the ShoreLake Shoreline Short Short film festival hosted by ShoreLake Arts. It was a great event featuring diverse film genres, techniques, and moods. It included students, some of our faculty, and community work!  We are lucky to have them as a community partner, providing wonderful opportunities for our faculty and students.

Spring Quarter Updates 

• Executive Team Spring Office Hours

Accreditation 

 
Today is the second and final day of our Mid-Cycle Accreditation visit. The entire campus is invited to the final session from 3:30-3:50 pm in the Boardroom 1010M-in person only; the evaluators will instruct us on what to expect next.  

Enrollment  
 
The 10^th day enrollment report shows a slight increase in spring enrollments compared to last year, continuing the College’s trend of increased enrollments. 

Financial Services  

 
Please refer to the 2023-24 Travel Reimbursement Expense Cut-Off Deadlines Memorandum for the upcoming fiscal year end (FYE) close to ensure that the Accounts Payable time has ample time to process payments and reconcile accounts. 

Below are a few key points regarding our deadline: 

• Travelers are still eligible for travel reimbursement even if they travel after June 10th.  
• Travel authorizations for travel through June 30, 2024, must be fully approved by the June 10, 2024, cutoff — contact travel@shoreline.edu and rburchfield@shoreline.edu if an exception is needed 
• Expense Reports for travel dates through June 30, 2024, must be fully approved by July 5, 2024, with prior notice. Will be processed with an accounting date of June 30, 2024. Same for other reimbursements — with prior notice. 

Technology Support Services (TSS) 

Three items for this week’s update: 

1. TSS received an update from our third-party partner on the Wired Network restoration project’s status.  We were previously scheduled to begin work on the week of April 22nd; however, we have been informed that the Union Local 46 has gone on strike and this unfortunately involves the workers that were scheduled to being here on campus. They are anticipating an agreement to come together soon, so we are tentatively scheduling work to begin the week of April 29^th. Once we have confirmation of this start date, an updated communication will be sent including timelines for each building.  

2. TSS has created a spreadsheet that includes the location and information of all physical Microsoft Teams phones across campus. This information was requested for anyone who needs to use a phone but does not have a license for Microsoft Teams (i.e., Students, Guests, etc.).  Although a phone number is listed, you must check with each department on availability.  As new phones are rolled out across campus, this list will be updated. 3. TSS has received reports that some flash drives are not being recognized by the new Ricoh machines across campus. Please see the instructions below if you are having issues with your flash drive being recognized on the new machines: 

IMPORTANT: The following steps will erase all data on the flash drive. Please temporarily move ALL files from the flash drive onto a folder on your computer, only AFTER this task reformat the flash drive with FAT32 File System. 

To reformat the flash drive: 

For PC: 

1. Open the File Explorer and right-click on your Flash Drive. 
2. On the popup menu click “Format”. 
3. Make sure that “FAT32 File System” is selected. 
4. Uncheck the “Quick Format” option, if checked. 
5. Click “Start”. 
6. After it is finished, close the “Format” window. 
7. Your flash drive is now formatted. You can now move your files from the temporary folder back onto your flash drive. 

For Mac: 

1. Open the Disk Utility app and right-click on your Flash Drive. 
2. On the popup menu click “Erase”. 
3. Make sure that “MS-DOS (FAT)” is selected. 
4. Click “Erase”. 
5. After it is finished, close the “Disk Utility” app. 
6. Your Flash Drive is now formatted correctly. 

 Notes: 

• After completing the above steps, if your flash drive is still not recognized by the Ricoh machine, you may need to use a different brand of flash drive (SanDisk, Kingston, etc.). 
• Please keep in mind that flash drives with a larger amount of data may take a little longer to be recognized. If you have a large drive, please give a little extra time for the Ricoh machine to recognize the device. 
• If you need help with formatting a flash drive, please contact TSS for assistance.

The Grand Opening Celebration for the Cedar Building is happening in two weeks! You all should have received our fun invitations in the mail. I want to say a huge thank you to our Senior Graphic Designer, Mia Bradshaw, for creating such a beautiful invitation for this event! 

It’s going to be a fantastic event and we hope to see you all there! 

Foundation: 

Michelle Cimaroli, Foundation Manager, has decided to go on a great adventure! Her last day at SCC will be 4/30. Please come celebrate her service, wish her well, and enjoy some goodies on Tuesday, April 30^th at 4 PM in the Board Room in Bldg. 1000.  

Annual Scholarship Applications are being evaluated now! If you are an evaluator, thank you! Your service makes a huge difference in the life of our students. If you want to be an evaluator, let Wendy in the Foundation know!

Well, it has been another busy week!  We had two candidates present this week for the VP Student Services position.  Thank you so much to everyone that came out for those.   My understanding is that we are also completing first level interviews for the VP DEI this week which means we will have candidates on campus soon.  In addition, we are working on finalizing the VPI process—such an exciting week and I hope to have some updates to share with you all soon. 

The multicultural center did a wonderful job organizing an Eid celebration this week to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Unfortunately, I missed the food portion (but what was left looked delicious!).  There were 90 or so folks attending at one point celebrating and learning more about Eid, and our diverse students who celebrate.  I spoke to several students and learned more about their educational journey and how they were enjoying SCC (very positive feedback but everybody shared they want hot food to return! Me too 😊).  In the spirit of the peacefulness of the day, there was beautiful music, camaraderie, conversation, and kinship.   

As you know we have our accreditation visit next week! I am looking forward to working with you all and celebrating the progress we have made to improve our practices and establish processes to continuously improve what we do to serve our students. Details below!

• An evaluator will walk around campus from 3-3:50 pm on Thursday, April 18^th to check campus facilities.  
• There will be no open forums.  
• Small groups of individuals will be interviewed, and Outlook meeting invites have gone out to those folks.

Admin 360 Evaluation – Participant Feedback 

Thanks to those of you who submitted feedback as contributors (direct reports, colleagues, etc.) and/or recipients (admin employees) of the new 360 evaluation process used in 2023. The feedback received is being evaluated within the Executive Team and in alignment with the overall goal of having comprehensive informed content for the purposes of evaluation of administrators. Stay tuned for updates regarding improvements to the 2024 Admin 360 Eval process.  

Print Services 

The Print Services online website is ready to receive your order requests. Full printing and envelope services are available again. Thank you to Ric, Peter, and the TSS team for getting these services restored. Contact Greg Jensen at (206) 546-4674 for all your printing, binding, and envelope needs.  

Technology Support Services (TSS) 

TSS is excited to announce the long-awaited reopening of the 4102 student computer lab located on the bottom floor of the library. Starting on Monday, April 15th, students can once again access a range of services to support their academic journey. These services include access to over 30 computers including both PC and Mac devices, a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) section to provide a space for those who are using their own computers, readily available kiosk computers for assistance with various functions (resetting passwords, updating account information, etc.), printing and scanning stations, as well as available quiet spaces for students to study.  The lab will be open to all students during the following schedule: 

• Monday – Thursday: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; 
• Friday: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; 
• Closed on Weekends and College Holidays 

As a reminder, this is a quiet student lab, so please make sure to comply with the lab rules when using this space. We thank everyone for their patience during this time of inactivity and look forward to seeing you in the computer lab. Have a wonderful day.

Well, here we are right before spring break. It’s been a jam-packed week, but some of that is exacerbated by some travel plans I have. My wife and I celebrated our 30-year “couplesversary” last year (which includes our dating and marriage) but had to cancel our trip due to the ransomware incident last year (and sorry to be a broken record about this!).  Do not fret though, as we are making up for it by redoing it this year and heading out of the country, so wish us luck on 31! I’ll share a photo or two when I return! 

I want to take a moment to update you on House Bill 1889 which allows people to receive professional licenses and certifications regardless of immigration or citizenship status. I brought a request forward from Fernando E. Mejia Ledesma who is the Campaign Director for Communities for Our Colleges and the Alliance for a Just Society/Just Strategy, to join other colleges and universities to support this bill. This went to the College Council and the Board of Trustees with support. I’m proud that Shoreline CC was one of the few community colleges to sign on, and more proud that the bill was signed by the Governor into law last week! This is an action that supports our DEI and equity goals and is very appreciated! 

We are so lucky to have the Seattle Nepali School offering instruction here on campus. Last weekend was the kickoff of their first day and they also brought the Falgu Purnima/Holi celebration to campus! It was beautiful, and so much fun!  Happy Holi everyone who missed it!! 

That same day I attended the theater department’s production of “The Crucible,” and despite my pink hair, and various other colors I couldn’t brush off from the event above, I was able to attend without too many comments! The play was excellent. The acting was so well done, and I loved the stage set too—it was a creative use of the space. I enjoyed seeing community members attending, also on our last day of performance. Kudos to Professor Monson, John Nold and the cast and crew! 

I also enjoyed attending a great concert put on by our Music Tech program. They always do a fantastic job but the “Snarky Band Project” was amazing and covered some really diverse genres (Ohio Players & The Bee Gees for example). They had me at snarky! 

Lastly, I just want to take a moment and offer a huge congratulations to everyone who was awarded tenure this week!

SCHOLARSHIP REVIEWERS NEEDED! Every Spring, the Shoreline Community College Foundation awards approximately 100 scholarships for the following academic year. Unlike the quarterly scholarship awards, academic year scholarships tend to have larger awards and twice the number of students applying. I am reaching out today to invite you to volunteer as a reviewer for our upcoming 24/25 academic year scholarships. 

Your help is a win for our donors, who so generously fund these opportunities, and for our students, who deserve thoughtful, insightful, and unbiased evaluation of their applications. When you volunteer as a reviewer, you play a crucial role in evaluating the applications of our students and recommending those who demonstrate exceptional determination and potential. Your recommendations will help guide the selection process, ultimately leading to life-changing opportunities for deserving candidates. Moreover, reviewing scholarship applications offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the aspirations and ambitions of our students. It allows you to engage with their stories, achievements, and future goals in a new and meaningful way.  

The time commitment for this volunteer opportunity is flexible – we estimate about 5 hours total between April 1 and April 22. The number of actual scholarships you will evaluate will depend on the number of applications and the number of evaluators we recruit. We will provide detailed instructions and guidelines to assist you throughout the review process. Best of all, you can log into the reviewer portal from anywhere.

Hey folks, I hope all is well.  This has been a remarkably busy week for the President’s Office, but a lot of great events occurred. 

Last week I attended the inspiring Student Art Show Gallery opening. These shows are always terrific events, but this time I had the daunting challenge of choosing a winner for the President’s Choice award. IT WAS SO HARD!! I walked through the gallery about 17 times trying to narrow down my choices. After a lot of deliberation, I gave the President’s Award to Ashley Mwalimu who had several beautiful pieces in the show. Thank you to Zach Mazur, our donors, and the Shoreline Community College Foundation for sponsoring the event and the awards as well! 

I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who came out for the Tim Wise presentation on Critical Race theory last week. I heard nothing but positive comments about the event. It was also great to see so many community members join us that night. Mr. Wise also did a training with ALL our administrators on anti-racist leadership at the institution the next morning. It was an excellent conversation and provided many learning opportunities, really setting the stage for next steps in growth and action at our college. I know Dr. Johnson has some wonderful ideas about how to continue this conversation and help us learn how to apply anti-racist principles to the work we are doing across the college. 

This week I also had the pleasure of learning about all the great work faculty are doing in the classroom and with the community. The board reviewed the ARCS for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year tenure candidates on Wednesday. I really enjoyed this process last year and I did this year as well (especially now that I know so many more of the faculty). It is impressive what our folks are doing – I hope we can find many ways to share that with the campus community.
