Happy day folks- hope you all are well. Last week was certainly a very exciting one. Between our College Commencement and special graduations for nursing and dental hygiene, the College was overflowing with joy! I always love seeing the students and meeting their families. It is one thing I really miss from my faculty days as certainly I knew many more students then and never missed a graduation. However, even in this role I get to have some connections with students, and of course with you all who know them so much more. I even caught a couple of our folks in tears as their loved ones exited the gym as graduates. Thank you all for what you do during the year and for the team that puts this together- it is a lot of work! 

This week I was able to attend the international orientation for new summer students. It’s always fun to see the students experience Shoreline for the first time, and observe how our staff and volunteers engage them, and ensure they are getting their needs met.  

One event I unfortunately was unable to attend this week was the Muckleshoot Effective Teaching Institute. We had a great contingent of 20+ folks that went, and I am eager to hear what they learned, and look forward to continuing moving initiatives forward to better support our diverse indigenous communities. I am promised a picture below. 

In light of the Holiday next week, we won’t be sending out a Campus Update, so I hope you all have a fun, and safe 4^th of July holiday!

The SCC Foundation is thrilled to share that Kara Haney has accepted the position of Program Coordinator. I am excited for Kara to share her incredible systems and process management skills with us, as well as her humor, kindness, experience, and intellect. She starts on July 1 – YIPPEEE!!!

Technology Support Services (TSS) 

We are excited to announce that the union strike has ended, and we can now proceed to work with our third party (Milne) on the wired network restoration project.  Work has begun this week and will likely continue for the remainder of the calendar year.  We are working on an updated building schedule and once we have that finalized, we will share with the campus the projected work durations for each building. We will make sure to work with each department/division during this process to ensure minimal disruptions to college operations. We thank you for your patience and support during this unfortunate delay.  

As previously reported, Formstack has announced a major platform upgrade that will include changes to the way some forms are displayed coming on July 2nd. One particularly notable change is how items are displayed on drop down menu questions. Previously, we added either a blank option or “Select One” and ensured those were not valid selectable options.  Now with the new update, a blank option is always presented by default. The old options of a blank or select one are no longer shown as the first item and are now valid selections.  This means until those extra blank or select one options are removed, we may receive submissions without valid selections.   

Action Needed: Please review your forms and if you need a change made to any form, please fill out the request at https://shoreline.formstack.com/forms/form_request.  There are many other changes coming to Formstack during this upgrade, however we believe the dropdown menu is the most significant change that will impact our environment. Please take some time to review all your forms beginning on July 3rd or as soon as you can.

I just want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped with our virtual campus tour shoot this week. Hey folks hope all are well. I’m catching up now from having Memorial Day off. Like you, I am getting through all of these emails! 

The annual Student Leadership Awards event last week was fun! If you haven’t attended before, students invite the college community and organize dinner and music, and then give out awards to SCC leaders for their contributions to the community. It is set up like the Academy Awards where presenters read winners from a card (and don’t know who it is ahead of time). I did warn Sundi (Director of Student Leadership & Residential Life) I would stray from the script (which I typically do). Sundi, Associated Student Government (ASG) President Lina, the ASG leadership, and the Student Affairs team did a wonderful job organizing the event! What fun for the students and community!  

There was a very powerful event in our theatre this past weekend—screening of the documentary film “Seattle Black Panthers Fight for Justice and Freedom.” Our colleagues, “The Meaningful Movies Project” really brought us a great film and avenue for discussion. The event opened with introductions and an amazing spoken word introduction by  

Sharon Nyree Williams which was followed by the film and a panel discussion with Sharon, Director, Producer & Executive Producer Rick DuPree, Seattle Chapter of the Black Panthers Party Co-Founder Elmer Dixon, Shoreline CC Acting DEIA VP Dr. J (Ernest B. Johnson II), and Marques DuPree, Rick’s son (and Director of Photography, Co-Director, Producer & Editor). I learned so much! Thank you to the Shoreline Community College Foundation for sponsoring the event, DarNesha Bowman, owner of Black Coffee Northwest for providing coffee and treats (and celebrating their location opening this fall), and Yummy Gyros food truck for the great food! 

Did you hear that King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski presented a proclamation to Shoreline Community College for our support of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities? This wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful leadership of Tasha Nālei Jugas and the team members of our WAVES/AANHPI Center on campus. Let’s keep the great work going! 

This week we were happy to welcome officials from the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge – ADEK to our campus. Shoreline is honored to be one of the first community colleges in the country to be selected to host Emirati students on the Khotwa Rizeup Scholarship Program. The program is part of a broader effort to equip Emirati students with the skills and experiences to contribute to the UAE’s knowledge-based economy. The all-day visit included a welcome by me and AVP Samira Pardanani, meetings with a faculty panel, a campus tour, a working lunch with our academic advisors and other International Education staff, and a meeting with students in the program.  

It’s been a great week here, hope the rest of it goes smoothly for everyone.

Hey there folks, I hope you are all doing well.  This was quite a week for community engagement.  I saw many of you at the really moving presentation by Matika Wilbur presentation which began with a wonderful intro from students in our First Nations club. Matika then shared work from her book, “Project 562” where she visited all 50 states and documented the diverse lives and stories of Native Americans. The work is beautiful, challenging, and inspirational. She called to us as educators to transform our institutions and better reflect indigenous histories, voices, and practices. We have taken some positive steps here at Shoreline in that way and are looking forward to more! 

Early this week I attended some of Anida Yoeu Ali’s workshops. She is currently featured in an exhibition at the Seattle Asian Art Museum which coincidentally I had just seen a few weeks ago (it’s really powerful if you haven’t seen it).  Big thanks to the multicultural center and WAVES for bringing her here to connect with our students and staff.   

I also really enjoyed a coffee reception held at the University of Washington for their annual undergraduate research symposium. Shoreline Community College is lucky to have the opportunity for our wonderful Honors students to participate! Thank you to the leadership of Michael Overa and the other Honors faculty!  UW President Dr Ana Mari Cauce did a wonderful welcome, reminding folks of the importance of undergraduate research as a core part of their mission, as well as sharing how this kind of experience had a profound impact on her journey.  

At this week’s Board meeting it was a pleasure to see three additional faculty members receive tenure. A huge congratulations go out to Caitlan Maxwell and Lauren Valentino Bryant, Library, and Kayleen Kondrack-Caranto, English for all their hard work and dedication. We are happy to have you here with us!

Lastly, I want to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day next week.  On behalf of the College, I want to thank all of our students and community members who have served and especially to those we honor for giving their lives in service.

Hey folks- this week I ran into a colleague on campus who congratulated me for the “book chapter” (the one Samira and I wrote about International Education at Shoreline), and I was puzzled. I asked, “How did you know that?” She said it was in your weekly update. Honestly, I forgot I put that info in last week’s update, but I was elated to know it was being read! Yes! 

We were very fortunate last Friday to be visited by Governor Jay Inslee. Governor Inslee was interested in learning more about how we have incorporated clean energy/air programs into HVAC systems as well as learning more about our new CEDAR building (x̌əpay̓ac) and some of the workforce programs that support Washington state. He also had a great conversation with Honors students and learned about their research and connection to University of Washington’s undergraduate research emphasis. 

I also attended another WAVES/API celebration this month and attended Troy Osaki’s event about Art & Social Justice. Little did we know there was going to be a beautiful spread of Hawaiian food as well! It was fun connecting with folks and learning with Troy- his creativity and poetry were inspiring. 

I enjoyed attending the beginning of the Business program’s “Big Event” which was a wonderful retention/pathways event to help students better understand the options within the program. I only provided a brief welcome but heard the speakers and camaraderie were wonderful. Hoping to see more of these events as we develop as a college to bring current students together with faculty and community to learn more about the possibilities. Well done! 

I was also able to get to the Black Student Union meet and greet on Thursday. It was packed. Great music, food, people playing games, and a great group of students. I was asked by a couple of students if I wanted some food and told them I had already had lunch but then they reminded me of a good excuse “for later.” So, I did take a couple pizza slices “for later.”  

Finally, I am really looking forward to Matika Wilbur’s event tonight– “Changing the way we see Native America.” Hope to see you there!

Hey there all—hope you are having a great week.  And I have to say, it has been kind a a great week actually.   

Starting with our Cedar building Grand Opening. Oh my gosh it was amazing!  Having the community on campus to see the beautiful building, and all the learning opportunities our students have was so terrific.  Our faculty and staff were just so inspiring in how they discussed their passionate work in the classrooms and lab spaces.  Our partners from the Suquamish and Muckleshoot Tribes shared inspiring words of welcome (and even a beautiful song from our Muckleshoot colleagues).  The food trucks, musicians from our band, and the kind and welcoming atmosphere our staff and admin created was just incredible.  Wendy Coates, Cat Chiappa and team really did knock it out of the park—thank you to ALL the students and staff that did all the hard work and planning to set this event up.  SCC really made a mark last week!

I also really enjoyed our Day of Learning. Theresa Harrington and team organized this like it was an international conference- SO well done.  I enjoyed our speaker Jeff Harry and the exercises we participated in. I think his suggestions for improving retention are spot-on.  I am going to begin by discussing these with ET members about what we can include in our meetings/practice and then as next steps ask them to do the same with their supervisees.  Let’s see where we can go with this!  

I also had the good fortune to meet with Dr Chris Villa for a lunch/hangout meeting today.  Dr Villa is the President of Skagit Valley College and has some really great insights into leadership and DEI work.  He shared some things Skagit Valley is doing, which I will bring back to our campus as well.  They are doing really well up North with an 11% increase in enrollment and some great strategies for outreach and using data to affect progress in recruitment of underserved communities.  More soon! 

Finally, as I discuss in the video below, we are working hard at discussing recommended innovation grants, one-time requests, and budget adjustments for the 2024-2025 budget cycle.  We are done with Innovation grants and now working on one-time funding requests and budget adjustments.  I will keep you posted on progress—the overall big picture budget will be presented to the board in May so please join us to get information for that as well.   

One more update! Samira Pardanani and I co-wrote a book chapter in the textbook: Narratives and Strategies of Effective Leadership in Community Colleges. Our article is called “The Evolution of a Successful International Education Program at a Community College: Harnessing Leadership to Create Meaningful Global Engagement at Shoreline Community College”. It was just released this week!  It was great working with Samira on this and I am excited about having some additional positive discussion of our great International Education program out there!
