Campus Updates 2/12/2026

Hey folks,

The president’s office has been very busy this week with on-campus work, particularly on supporting the HR Payroll team and planning activities to support our community with concerns about ICE.

I did have a chance to meet with the great team from Workforce and update them on college activities.  And yes, you can invite me to a department meeting anytime!

A couple fun things you may not know about…

Have you seen the new IE newsletter?  It’s great!

Also…

Shoreline Community College has launched a new, coordinated process to better serve Spanish‑speaking students. Our “Voces Hispanas” team now provides direct connection, guidance, and cross‑campus support.

Thanks to the Voces team, we already have had new inquiries and a campus tour setup through this process which literally just launched.  Share the info far and wide!

Cheers,

Jack

We are making good progress toward finalizing our brand package and usage guidelines for our new logo. We look forward to sharing them with you later this month. In the meantime, please refrain from using the new logo in your signature files or communications.  I have received several emails this week from folks who have begun using the new logo in their email signature files.  While I love the enthusiasm, we are not quite ready for that yet but will cover that information in the brand guidelines.  Thanks! ~Cat

Campus Updates 2/5/2026

This week I have spent a significant amount of time connecting with HR colleagues to garner support for the payroll transition to Finance.  I am updating the team regularly on progress and will share more widely as we lock in the next steps.

This week, I also participated in and supported several great community and campus events. I attended the college’s annual ceremony honoring Edwin T. Pratt, a Shoreline resident and civil rights activist whose legacy continues to shape us. This year’s observance included a land acknowledgment led by Rashawn Smith, reflections connecting past and present from Dr. J (Ernest B. Johnson II), a proclamation from Mayor Betsy Robertson naming January 29 as Edwin T. Pratt Day, and the announcement by Jacob Bilbo of a new Shoreline park to be named in Mr. Pratt’s honor.

The program also featured powerful contributions from Miriam Pratt, Sarah Haycox, Nancy Rawles, Robert Britten, alumnus Monique Franklin, and others through spoken word, music, and poetry, affirming Mr. Pratt’s enduring vision and impact.  It was simply incredible. Special thanks to the Foundation, Savena, Lavena, and Yushin for all your teams’ work doing this!

I also joined colleagues at the University of Washington Shoreline Community College Dental Hygiene Program Open House, where I connected with UW partners, donors, and community members. It was encouraging to see the facility and lab improvements made possible through donor support and to celebrate the strength and visibility of our dental hygiene program.  Really cool!

Finally, I supported a historic moment on campus with the first flying of the Black American Heritage flag at Shoreline Community College to officially launch Black History Month. The event drew strong participation and included inspiring remarks from Black Student Union faculty lead Rashawn Smith, who did a wonderful job sharing the significance of the flag and the importance of visibly honoring Black history and identity on campus.  Remarks from students in the crowd already demonstrated the importance of doing so, and I was really proud to see this happen at Shoreline.  Thanks to all who came out.  More soon.

Cheers,

Jack

A note from Wendy:

Taisa has shared that she and her husband will be moving back to Europe, with her last day at Shoreline on February 4. While I am truly sad to see her go, I am deeply grateful for the impact she has made during her time with the Foundation.

Taisa has been an exceptional teammate and a genuine champion for Shoreline. She strengthened and grew our alumni program, elevated the Giving Table, brought new energy to the Donor & Scholar Celebration, and set a new standard for thoughtful, warm donor stewardship.

Beyond her accomplishments, Taisa has been a joy to work with, and her kindness, curiosity, and care for our mission will be greatly missed. We are excited for the next chapter she and Ernesto are beginning and wish them all the best as they return to Europe.

Campus Updates 1/29/2026

Hello on a very rainy day. I hope all are having a good week.

It was a pleasure to represent Shoreline Community College this week alongside Samira Pardanani at the 77th annual India Republic Day celebration event sponsored by the Consulate General of India, Seattle. The day celebrates the adoption of the constitution in India.  It was great to meet with colleagues from across the state and to continue partnering with the consulate.

I also met with two colleagues from NAIS – an organization we work with in China who have connected us with students to take classes online.  It is a wonderful organization and their dedication to students is really impressive.

I want to thank all our community members and employees who spoke at the Board meeting yesterday.  We are living in very tough times, and it is important for your voices to be heard.  I will have some updates to the payroll situation (and progress on other items) in our community check-in on Friday, which I think will be helpful for all.

I am looking forward to the Edwin Pratt event today. It’s part of our history in Shoreline, and such an important event – especially at this time.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 1/22/2026

Hope everyone has had a good week.  My schedule is pretty packed this week, but some good highlights to share as well.

I was able to join the Shoreline Rotary this week.  You may know it meets right here on campus so certainly that is convenient.  It does start at 7 am which is of course…early, but intended to support folks’ various schedules.  I am in at 8, so not too much of a stretch.  It was great to connect with some community members and learn about the current philanthropy they are doing.  They have a longstanding history of supporting the college (the current President is a former chemistry faculty member who was here for 45 years).

I also had the pleasure of attending Larry Gossett’s presentation on Martin Luther King.  It was a wonderful event, drawing about 50 people or so, and sponsored by the Black Student Union, the yəhaw̓ center, and ASG.  I learned a lot from Mr.  Gossett in his work as an activist and community leader.  What I enjoyed the most was observing him from a distance while he sat at a table interacting and inspiring some of our young students.  Rashawn Smith & Lavena Seawright are doing such great work with BSU and the students.  Even with all of the challenges surrounding us, it was hard not to get goosebumps.  Keep on the lookout for several events coming your way soon.

I am looking forward to the alumni gathering this afternoon and evening – will keep you posted on that as well.  Have a great week.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 1/15/2026

Well, it’s been a very busy week – for you as well, I’m sure.  As we start the quarter, there’s a lot to catch up on.  I have been working on evaluations and some new relationships I am hoping to foster.  I’ll keep you posted on those.  I did have a great conversation this week with Rod Dembowski from the King County City Council.  He’s a great supporter of the college and I learned about some new initiatives from him.

I was also able to attend three incredible events that truly reflect the strength and diversity of our community.

I attended one event hosted by the Consulate General of India in Seattle and our International Education department, which was a beautiful celebration of culture and connection. Consul General Prakash Gupta, Debadutta Dash, and their team shared inspiring words, treated us to a wonderful Indian dinner, and screened the award-winning film English Vinglish as part of the 2026 India Film Festival series. The film’s message resonates deeply with our values—advocating for internationalization, multilingualism, and supporting immigrant communities in their pursuit of dignity and respect.

I also attended the virtual kick-off of the Latino Educational Training Institute’s (LETI) 2026 Latino Leadership Initiative. It was an honor to join LETI founder and President Rosario Reyes and other amazing colleagues to celebrate this milestone. I’m excited to see the program grow and empower future leaders, which will include Shoreline students for the first time.

Finally, the grand opening of our new Center for Student Empowerment, “yəhaw̓ the Gathering!” was an incredible success. The space was packed with energy—student organizations came together for music, games, and Egyptian food from a local alum, all centered on the vision to “lift up the sky together.” Huge thanks to the faculty and staff who have supported this idea for more than 40 years as well as Savena Garrett, Brian Ramos, and the entire team for making this happen. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this inspiring initiative.

Hope you all have a good rest of the week.

Cheers,

Jack

Technology Support Services (TSS)

Student Migration Project:

TSS would like to provide an update on the Student Migration Project. All student email accounts have now been transitioned from Google to Microsoft, and account domains have been updated. Student usernames remain the same; however, the domain (everything after the “@”) has changed from @go.shoreline.edu to @shoreline.edu. Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is now required for all students, providing improved account security.

To support a smooth transition, a temporary email alias has been enabled. Messages sent to a student’s former @go.shoreline.edu address will continue to be delivered to their new Microsoft account. This alias is intended to give students time to update their contact information to the new address. We will reevaluate the timeline for this alias in the Spring ’26 quarter.

Due to the outage over the New Year’s holiday, the timeline for fully deactivating the Google platform has been delayed. Most Google services have been disabled; however, access to Google Drive remains available by TSS request through next Friday, January 23rd, for students who wish to download or retrieve any active documents or items that may not have transferred during the migration. We anticipate fully discontinuing the Google platform within the next two weeks.

Ricoh Printing Issues:

Following the Microsoft outage, TSS has received reports that some campus users are unable to send print jobs or emails to Ricoh printers. We are actively working with Ricoh to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. USB printing remains functional at this time. We will share an update as soon as full service is restored.

The 26/27 Academic Year Scholarship application window is now open! Students only need to submit one application in AwardSpring and they will be considered for every scholarship they’re eligible for. Please take the time to share this information with any students you work with.
