Campus Updates 12/1/23

Events and News

Hello folks, hope all are well. Here we are back from the Thanksgiving break and of course busy as ever!

This week has been spent mostly here on campus at my desk doing emails, and in a lot of meetings (I imagine many can relate).  I’m excited about the great work you all have done on the strategic plan, and watching it evolve has been fun to see.

I can’t believe it’s December already! I hope you all have great plans for the break.  Mine are a bit up in the air at the moment, but I can tell you it will not involve driving long distances… Had a great time visiting with my in-laws, niece and nephews in the Sacramento area over Thanksgiving, but the drive- too much in a short period! Have a great rest of your week.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 11/22/23

Hey there folks! I hope all are well. It’s a short week with Thanksgiving around the corner but here are a few updates for you.

Unfortunately, I missed a LOT of International Education Week which is a bummer as IE does such a great job with it. I was able to go over for Trivia Day with our new ASG president Lena (after our meeting) and it was really fun. I tried to guess the top 10 countries we are representing here (and did *OK*) and managed to win a few prizes and see some photos of IE staff as babies, which was a fun bonus!

At the end of last week, I attended the Association for College Trustees meeting in Seattle with Board members Chan, Wells and Ringer. We attended some good sessions and spent some time with local colleagues as well.

On Saturday, some faculty and staff attended a Gimjang event (which is focused on Kimchi making) at the United Seattle & Bellevue Korean School. There were 450 K-12 kids, 80 parents, volunteers & community leaders in attendance including Seo Eunji, the Korean Consul General of Seattle. We are meeting with school representatives from there in a week or so to discuss possible partnerships. More soon!

What a blast it was yesterday celebrating SOUPSGIVING!! Special thanks to Human Resources for this wonderful event. It was terrific. I also want to thank Nora Peters who always reminds us how important community events are. Thanks also to The Wanz for being our celebrity judge and to Lucas Rucks who won a glass dolphin (Don’t tell him we give these away all the time) with his “Chicken Tortilla Soup”.  The People’s Choice Award, winner of the Golden Ladle goes to Director of Student Learning, Jeffrey Janosik with the PNW Seafood Chowder. I am a vegetarian so I unfortunately couldn’t sample either of those soups, but I heard from everyone who tasted them that they were both delicious!

I hope you all have a wonderful week and time with your friends and family.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 11/16/23

Events and News

Hi folks- I hope all are doing well.

Last week one of the big highlights for me was the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities: Strategic Governance Considerations in a Changing Higher Ed Landscape conference right here in Seattle!  I attended some great presentations and saw several Shoreline folks there as well.  Our Board Chair and Vice-Chair also attended the meetings focused on governance.  I really enjoyed seeing so many of us there having a chance to learn and connect with colleagues.

This week, Carl (from Mithun) and Stephen (from SSW- our architecture firms) did a presentation on our capital projects with a focus on the new STEAM building to the Associated Student Government (ASG) meeting. While the Board already approved the naming practice for our buildings, I thought giving the students some choice (within the narrowed down/translated terms) would be good.  Sundi reported that the students enjoyed hearing about the updates to the STEAM project and about the new wayfinding initiatives that are planned for the campus.  The students were most excited about Bracken (Fern) as the name for the new STEAM building so we will be adopting that recommendation. Like Cedar, this will be accompanied by the Lushootseed translation. I am very proud of our community for moving this work forward and for including our students!

This week I also attended the Higher Education Research and Development Institute (West) as a new Board member. The organization is focused on bringing innovative modern technologies in higher education to presidents and chancellors to get feedback on them, and to educate others on the possibilities for their use. It was super interesting, and I am really interested in exploring some of these ideas with the campus.

In case you missed guest speaker Peter Bacho’s wonderful talk from last week, Rob Berg was kind enough to make a recording of the event which you can find here.

Lastly, I wanted to give you an update on something that might have been on your mind over the past few days as you have been following the news. This week, a federal government shutdown was averted when the House and the Senate passed a continuing resolution to maintain operating funds without an approved budget in place. We expect the President to sign this week as well, which will confirm the continued operations of federal agencies through at least February 2024.

How does this impact Shoreline? Between now and February 2024, not at all. Shoreline utilizes several federal grants to maintain some student support services as well as financial aid packages and accesses these funds through a governmental funding drawn-down process throughout the year. If a federal shutdown occurs, this stops the College from being able to draw down funding from closed federal agencies. In preparation for this, by November 17th, Shoreline will have drawn down all federal student aid awards/grants for fall quarter and will be proactively continuing to draw down federal and grant funds throughout the year to ensure any future shutdown will have limited to no impact on our ability to serve students.

The Executive Team will also continue to closely monitor federal funding actions in the coming months and provide additional updates to campus as they are available. Questions regarding this information can be directed to the Budget Office (sccbudget@shoreline.edu) at any time.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 11/9/23

Events and News

Hello all- I hope you are doing well!

VP-Instruction Recruitment Update

As shared in my 10/26/23 Campus Update, the College did not identify a hire from the Fall 2023 Vice President for Instruction (VP-I) candidate pool. An updated recruitment announcement which highlights the DEIA lens for position work will be posted for application beginning next week, with an updated timeline established to bring finalist on campus towards the middle of January 2024 for a potential hire by April 1st.  A big thank you to the VP-I screening committee for their continued work in support of a hire for VP-I position.

Related to the VP-I recruitment update above, both Lucas Rucks and Shanon Ehmke-Reedy have been extended through April 30, 2024, in their Acting VP-I and Acting Executive Dean of Business, Communications & Social Sciences, respectively. Their continued support in these leadership roles is much appreciated.

As usual it was a busy week at Shoreline, and here are a few of my highlights.

I attended a really inspiring talk yesterday by Professor Peter Bacho. He read from his award-winning book “Cebu” as well as his recently released “Uncle Rico’s Encore.” Professor Bacho discussed the history and legacy of “Pinoy Seattle” as well as the resistance and strength of the local AAPI community in a way that was entertaining, moving, and powerful. His sense of humor and poignant points about racism and resiliency were inspirational and I think we all learned a great deal. Thank you so much to Professor Nicole Buyagawan and the Ethnic Studies program for this important event.

Yesterday we had another wonderful gallery opening event focused on one of our amazing new faculty members. The showing is called “Go Home” by Parisa Ghaderi. The work is beautiful and thought provoking, creating a great space for conversation and community. Come check it out for yourself – in the 1000 building (and say hi if you come by)!

This past week we really enjoyed seeing our partners Director of EDI Sophia Kristina Aratrap and Director of Tribal/Government Affairs Glenda Breiler from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. They came to connect and tour the new Cedar (6000) building! They are both wonderful leaders, and we are chatting about ways we can work together to help support their vision for the State in bringing us all together to create collective action and change. More to come.

Thank you to everyone that came and donated to Shoreline Community College Foundation Giving Table event last week. It was so wonderful spending time with everyone. My guess is Wendy will give you the details below, but she and the team did a FANTASTIC job!  They met the fund-raising goal and packed the house with wonderful guests who care about our college and want to see us be successful! Check out this great video that Rob, Cat, and Tony did—so well done!

And finally—Pizza. Thank you to everyone who sent in pizza suggestions.  I consider this data gathering, so yes, I will try various places and report back to you in person.

Cheers,

Jack

To ensure proper recording of these transactions, please contact accountsreceivable@shoreline.edu with the amount and the department budget coding when expecting these customer payments.

Budget Office

FY 2024 budget process has moved from development to implementation. A huge thank you to our budget consultant, Becca Chen, for getting the FY 2024 budget developed after some major hurdles this year. SCC Budget analysts are busy uploading budgets into ctcLink. Please be patient as response times may be somewhat delayed.

Purchasing

SCC Purchasing now has additional support. Tracy Bjerkset, TSS purchasing specialist, will now be able to dispatch purchase orders. The goal is to provide end-to-end purchasing in TSS resulting in purchasing efficiencies campus-wide. Thank you, Tracy!

Student Finance/Cashier’s Office

Staff are reviewing student accounts with an outstanding balance for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students owing $500 or more will have a hold placed on their account.  The hold threshold was raised from $100 to $500 at the start of Fall 2023 term.  Holds placed for non-payment will prevent the student from enrolling in Winter 2024 term.  Students may contact the Cashier’s Office in person during college business hours located in Foss 5227, telephone 206-546-7850 or email accountsreceivable@shoreline.edu

Belated THANK YOU to TSS

Financial Services wishes to send our appreciation for the hard work and effort by TSS and Ric Doike-Foreman for prioritizing restoration of the network connection lost in the ransomware event. They were able to get SCC accounts payable’s check printer back up and running after several long weeks last summer. This made daily printing of check payments to vendors, employees, and students possible again. Thank you!

Communications and Marketing:

I would like to officially welcome Steve Marshall to the Communications and Marketing team.  Steve has been doing great work with the Outreach and Recruitment team, but after a review of many of our communication practices and platforms this summer, it was determined that he could be a great asset to the C&M team, and can really help us shore up a lot of student communication across campus in myriad ways, both with our prospective and existing students. Stay tuned for more updates!

Events and News

Hello everyone, hope you are well.  The weather has definitely taken a shift downward this week and I need to do some serious shopping.  I thought I did Ok last year, but I have been feeling like I need more cold-weather gear!

One cure for that of course is soup, and more importantly Soupsgiving!  I am sure you saw the email but just in case you didn’t:

Who: All employees are welcome! You are welcome to enter a soup and/or come as a taster.

To gain entry to the event, you must bring an item for the SCC Food Pantry.
Why: To promote employee relationships, fun and to support our SCC Food Pantry.

Where: Quiet Dining Room

When: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Register your entry here! Must have an ingredient list/recipe for allergy purposes. Last date to register: Wednesday, November 15, 2023, 5:00pm

I will be the event’s emcee and look forward to seeing all the creative recipes you come up with, most importantly, it is great that we are supporting our Food Pantry and Benefits Hub!

We had a wonderful day on Tuesday with colleagues from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe Tribal College. They came to tour the Campus with a special focus on auto and biotech. We discussed ways we can continue to partner and serve our indigenous community. I was particularly excited about a very long list of ideas we created! We are all looking forward to the good work we hope to do together. Thanks to Muckleshoot representatives Dr Denise Bill, Madrienne White, Elise Bill-Gerrish, Justine Koble, Wayne Buchanan, Trustees Rebecca Chan & Rebecca Ringer, Crystal Hess, Rashawn Smith, John Henning & The SCC Faculty Senate, and the rest of our team for support especially Alejandra Salgado, Brandon Fryman, Aisha Hauser, Lucas Rucks, and Dalila Paredes.

Lastly, we had a fun celebration of Halloween starring the Parent Child Center team, kids, and parents! So cute, and what a morale lifter! Thank you to everyone across campus who gave healthy treats to kids and left the less healthy ones for us 😊 Great job Director Junaid Haq, who is really doing some wonderful work at the Center!

Dr. Kahn handing out candy to cute kids in Halloween costumes from the PCC

The Foundation Giving Table event is tomorrow, and I can’t wait!!  Looking forward to seeing some of you there and supporting our students!!  We are going to break records this year!!!

This weekend in addition to some work stuff, I am going on a Pizza Quest.  You heard right. When I moved here last year, I made the remark that the Pizza isn’t great here and most folks I spoke with agreed (I tend to like the greasy old school NY style). One colleague outside SCC said that they have a favorite place in the city which is really good and thinks they can change my mind! I will report back next week!

Have a great week all,

Cheers,

Jack
