Campus Updates 10/26/23

Events and News

Hey folks- hope all is going well! It has been a jam–packed week – much to share.

First of all, thanks to those of you who were able to attend and provide feedback during our Vice President for Instruction (VP-I) open forums last week. And my sincere appreciation to the VP-I screening committee for their ongoing work in support of the recruitment for this position. After careful consideration of the College’s needs, I will not be moving forward to hire either candidate and instead will be revising and reposting the VP-I position. Updates to come when we have them.

WOW the Flamenco concert with Rafael Ramírez and his group this Sunday at the theater here was simply stunning! Thank you to all who came out to support this event and for all of the camaraderie afterwards. It was so lovely to have so many folks from our diverse Hispanic/LatinX community join, and to hear so many folks conversing in Spanish!! Thank you to the honorary consulate of Spain in Seattle Luis Esteban (Fernando!) for bringing this beautiful event to us. Looking forward to many more. As I said to him- “más, más, más!”

On Saturday night, I was very humbled to be invited to speak at the Tibetan Association of Washington (TAW): Congressional Gold Medal Celebration in Seattle. It was a great community event with wonderful Himalayan food and beautiful performances from community members. I am so pleased Shoreline Community College can be a partner to the community and find a home for their Sunday school! (Photos courtesy of Kurt Smith and myself). Now if I can just get the chili paste recipe- it was so GOOD, and so HOT!!

There was an impressive turn-out on Saturday morning for the King County Sheriff’s Office “Gift Cards for Guns” event. Lines of cars came out (50 guns were traded before the event even opened!). I was really fortunate to have met Sherriff Patricia Cole-Tindall of King County and her team at the event. A big thanks to her and, Kenmore PD, Chief Kelly Park and the Shoreline Police Department, and our very own Greg Cranson and the SSC Security Team who did such a great job! 319 weapons were collected on Saturday- well done!

We also had a terrific advisory event last week with our CTE programs and industry and high-school partners. It was a packed room filled with wonderful conversation. A special thanks to Shanon Reedy, Kara Haney, Stephanie Sareeram, Lauren Hadley, Dalila Paredes, Cris Walters, Tamami Eggers, Ellen Pincus, Lisa Smith, Mary Bonar, Mary Burroughs, Mary Lockman, Nancy Dick, Gary Fantozzi, Asako Esperum, and Alex Mitu for all their work in coordinating, to Shoreline high schools for providing the food, to Rob Berg for providing the video presentation and to Andres Barriga Mendoza for sound. Apologies if I missed anyone, but a huge thank you to all involved!

Lastly, this week I also had the opportunity to drop by the new faculty institute on Friday and speak with some faculty. I really love how Dr Perez organizes the meeting and allows for engaging information sharing across faculty.  I’m Really glad that program is evolving (in addition to bringing in some fantastic new faculty!).

Hope you all have a great rest of your week!

Cheers,

Jack

The Giving Table: SCCF Annual Fundraising Luncheon

The SCCF annual fundraising luncheon happens on November 3! This year’s event will focus on how donors impact the students and programs at SCC. Unlike in past years, there will be no cost to attend the event. Guests will be asked to consider making a gift of $200 (or an amount that is meaningful for them) during the event. If you would like to help or want to know more about filling up a table of people, let Wendy know!

Giving Table – Table Captains:

We are seeking volunteers to host tables. This means you would invite people you know professionally (or personally) who you think would be excited about giving a gift in support of SCC Students and programs, you help them register, and let them know any details (how to park etc.), and on the day of the event you act as the Foundation’s representative at the table! Don’t worry, it’s not hard, in fact it’s fun! We’ll even have a handbook that will help you know what to do and when. Let Wendy know if you are interested!

Giving Table – Sponsors:

Sponsorship is a critical component of any fundraising event. Sponsors, individuals, and businesses, provide funds for promotional consideration on our website, social media, printed collateral, etc. Event sponsors help to defray the cost of the event so that every dollar raised will support SCC students and programs! If you want to be a sponsor, or know someone who could be a sponsor, click here for more info.

Campus Updates 10/19/23

Events and News

Good afternoon, all, I hope you are doing well.  A highlight this week was of course the VP of Instruction interviews.  Thank you so much to those who attended the forums and are providing feedback for next steps.  We very much appreciate your feedback!

Last week we were thrilled to host another Catalytic Converter (CatCon event) on campus. Through a partnership with Shoreline Police department our automotive department was able to paint and engrave the catalytic converters in 78 cars as a way to prevent theft.  We would like to say a huge thank you to our students; Dylan, Felipe, Michelle, Jaeden, Ash, Colin and Christian, our employees; Mark Keith, Amber Avery-Graff, and Gary Fantozzi, and members of the Shoreline PD including Chief Kelly Park, Deputy Jurado, and Detective Kieland for working together to make this great community event happen.

On Wednesday, we held our monthly community check-in. We have been doing budget updates in these but are slipping this month since we have our new VP BAS and I wanted to give him some time to get acclimated. We will bring those back next month.  I really appreciate everyone joining and contributing all of your questions and recognition of everyone’s great work.  Bravo!

A couple items I was going to cover here I also mentioned at the forum. On Food Trucks—we have been getting some very understandable questions about the prices at some of the trucks. As I am sure you know “eating out” has been particularly challenging lately across the country (food trucks and all) and this is certainly true in the greater Seattle area. While we can’t have an immediate impact on the economic conditions of the region, Gayla Hocker reached out to see if they could find ways of packaging some more a-la-carte options and/or offering more some less expensive choices. I appreciate the concern being brought forward and we hope to have more permanent options in the future.

Speaking of which, we are still working to bring Black Coffee to campus. We discovered late in the game that our overall infrastructure was not as “plug and play” as we imagined in terms of plumbing/electrical and needs for equipment. We are working through that now and I will keep you posted. My apologies for the delay.

Another announcement was regarding the budget and budget adjustments and planning information (mentioned in the planning memo #1). The budget adjustments are still in process, and I hope to have these clarified and budgets loaded with that information ASAP. In addition, I will also explain the process for tracking area review goals (both within the area reviews themselves as well as across the college) – still working on both of these and they will get done and info shared as quickly as I can.

Looking forward to the Flamenco event this weekend!

Events and News

Hi folks, I hope you are all doing well. If you are thinking, “I haven’t seen Jack on campus for awhile,” you would be correct! I have actually been to two conferences over the last week. The first was the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) conference with teammates Wendy Coates & Josh Krupke. It was a good conference, and I am coming home with some great ideas about how to better support our mission and work with the community to increase scholarships and funding for students!

I also just finished attending the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Leadership conference in Las Vegas with board chair Rebecca Chan. It was an excellent conference! I pulled one of those annoying “boss” things also when I was there, texting people during meetings, “Do we have this?” “Could we do that?” I was just really excited- seeing some of the innovative practices across the country was so inspiring. I can’t wait to bring back some of the ideas to SCC.

Unfortunately, I missed US Senator Patty Murray visiting us last Friday to discuss efforts to extend federal childcare stabilization funding, her comprehensive childcare reform legislation, and her continued work to address the childcare crisis. I heard the meeting was terrific. She was joined in the roundtable discussion by Washington State Representative Tana Senn (D-LD-41); Allison Krutsinger, Director of Public Affairs at DCYS; Junaid Haq, Director of the Parent Child Center (PCC) at SCC (who apparently was AWESOME even though he has only been here a month), Deeann Puffert, CEO of Child Care Aware of Washington, and Laurie Carlsson, an amazing parent at the PCC. As you know, affordable childcare is a major challenge in the state, and across the country. We were so fortunate to have these folks advocating for children and families. I am eager to learn of any partnerships that may be forming and connecting their work to our PCC.

I am staying down south an extra day or so, to connect with some of my friends from San Diego who are driving up for the weekend, but I am looking forward to seeing you all in person next week! Be well.

Best,

Jack

Events and News

Good evening folks- hope everyone is doing well. This past week has been pretty packed

I imagine by now you have heard about this great Flamenco event we are hosting at Shoreline. We had a great planning meeting on Friday, and I wanted to be sure and let people know– The Honorary Consul of Spain, Luis F. Esteban, together has brought us this special concert with Rafael Ramírez and his group! He was the winner of the “Breakout Artist Award” in Flamenco Jerez Festival 2023. The concert will take place on October 22nd at Shoreline Community College Theater, at 3 p.m. Hope you can join us! Bring a friend! We will be offering special rates for students and Shoreline employees. Get tickets here.

This week I am at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education conference with our ED of Foundation & Advancement Wendy Coates & Foundation rep Josh Krupke learning about how to improve our strategies to work with our communities to raise additional funding to support students!  It has been great so far, and I can’t wait to implement some of the ideas.

Thank you again to faculty and staff who are beginning to propose additional ideas that fit with the work I mentioned during Opening Week.  Our charge isn’t just about focusing on underrepresented prospective students, but challenging the ways we serve them and support their goals. I described this as largely reactive and individualistic, where the focus is on waiting for folks to come to us and supporting them one at a time, often in silos.

My challenge to the campus is not to do something new, but to do more of the creative work that is already happening at SCC.  I have seen many approaches that are proactive, serve groups/communities, and are systemic, action-oriented and aligned with our mission.

One example I mentioned during opening week is a wonderful project coordinated by Michael Boehm, Suzanne Gugger, Gury Dorje and our awesome auto faculty Amber Avery-Graff and Rashawn Smith. The project involves creating an introductory continuing education class in automotive (lube technician), gathering a group of students together through CECO & BFET (who paid for their tuition), enrolling, and supporting them in this class and connecting the class to our 2-year program. After the first round of this pilot, half of the students decided to apply for our two-year program on campus – Its simply brilliant! If you need help brainstorming ways to do this on the enrollment, retention, or completion side- let’s talk!

Hope you have a fantastic week!

Best,

Jack

Events and News

Good afternoon all and hope you are staying dry! It felt like we really got pushed out of summer into fall, but here we are. I know many of our colleagues are very happy about this, but I’m still getting used to it!

I wanted to thank all the folks who helped prepare our Opening Week events and trainings. I felt a lot of great camaraderie amongst Shoreliners (is that a word?) and learned a lot myself throughout the week. It was lovely seeing many of you in person, and I’m already following up with those of you who have expressed an interest in discussing topics brought up in my opening remarks. Please feel free to drop in during the office hours (below) or set up a meeting with Lori – I had one great faculty member come visit, and we have begun planning based on some of the principles I mentioned. I’m very excited!

I was honored to take part in a beautiful tree rededication in honor of Erin Walker who worked as an advisor in the International Education department until her sudden death in 2013. The tree in the courtyard that had been planted in her honor was failing to thrive and appeared to have died. Thanks to our caring and collaborative team, including the Classified Shop Steward, Facilities Director, ED of Foundation & Advancement, VP of International Education & Global Engagement, and Gardener Erik Falk & team, we planted a new tree in her honor just across the courtyard from the original. Erin’s friends, family, and colleagues gathered and shared stories and memories, reminding us (or teaching us) about what a special person she was. It was a moving community event, and it was lovely to meet her colleagues and hear their stories. Interestingly, the original tree that had withered and was thought dead, has started to show signs of new growth, and now has space to grow and flourish.

The Board Meeting this week also went very well. Our board is terrific, and they asked helpful questions on our two priority proposals. Our board proposal was accepted, which is great news. One thing I wanted to clarify in case this was confusing- we proposed a flat budget (assuming revenue and expenditures would be similar to last year) but there is an increased revenue from last year showing. The increase in revenue is from legislators to help offset the cost relating to an increase in salaries, because of the funding for faculty and staff salary adjustments. This is not additional funding we have for other items.

The Board also approved our naming concept proposal, a joint project with the ASG and some of our new tribal partners. The proposal was to name our new buildings after the indigenous flora and native fauna on campus, and to correspond with the wonderful Lushootseed translation and provide audio pronunciation and a history of the project within the buildings as well. It’s an exciting step for us as we improve how we serve tribal communities, one I’m particularly proud of.

On Tuesday I attended the WAVES Welcome Party! The team did a wonderful job with games, food, and just great community. The Furikake Chex mix was really good (and slightly addictive!!). Thank you, Dr King, for your leadership – we will miss your presence on campus. I am looking forward to many other events to bring our AANAPISI students and friends together in community.

This is an image of Aisha, Joan and Tasha ribbon cutting the relaunch of the WAVES Center.

This week I also had lunch with the “5-star” consortium presidents (Everett, Edmonds, Lake Washington, Cascadia, and us) as a welcome to the new president of Everett, Dr Chemene Crawford and to me (I’m still new!). It was a great lunch and meeting – discussing what is new on the various campuses, the challenges we all share, as well as the triumphs!

It was definitely a week of good food! Another amazing event at Shoreline Community College yesterday was Kimchi Day! The Seattle Korean Association, UNIHOPE, the Korean Multicultural Association, and our Shoreline International Program hosted this beautiful event. We had a cooking demonstration and were able to enjoy Kimchi and some spicy Bibimbap prepared by the talented chefs. Students and staff alike were moved by the wonderful food, friendship, and learning opportunity.

Last but not least… I did make it to the WA State Fair. And yes, I did win a frog. I played several games and lost and was determined to win the clown game where you shoot water in its mouth until a balloon pops. I did, and it was a proud moment. I gave the frog to my friend’s child who seemed to appreciate the addition to his new stuffed menagerie (he had won a giant snake earlier), And yes, I did share a brick of fries and scones. Love to hear your stories!

Best,

Jack
