From L. Patterson, Payroll & Benefits Coordinator: Employee-Paid Long-Term Disability (LTD) Benefit

Hello,

Open Enrollment closed on November 30th, and if you have not done so already, you may still need to make a choice about your employee-paid long-term disability (LTD) benefit.

This benefit will change starting January 1, 2022. All PEBB-eligible employees will automatically be enrolled in employee-paid LTD, if not already enrolled. If you don’t make a change, you will default to the coverage level that covers 60% of the first $16,667 of your monthly pre-disability earnings.

The new LTD benefit will offer a minimum 90-day waiting period with two coverage level options. You also have the option to reduce or decline your employee-paid LTD coverage by submitting the 2022 Long-Term Disability Enrollment/Change form to your payroll or benefits office. Please refer to the FAQ sheet attached for further information regarding options and costs.

If you don’t actively reduce or decline your LTD benefit election by December 31, 2021, you will be enrolled in the 60-percent plan, and the premium will be deducted from your paycheck for January 2022 coverage.

Your long-term disability benefit is different from the state’s new long-term care benefit, which is called The WA Cares FundLong-term disability replaces a portion of your income due to accident, illness, or pregnancy. You can reduce or decline your employee-paid LTD coverage at any time. Long-term care pays for the cost of care when you need assistance with activities of daily living and is not currently part of your PEBB Program benefits.

How to play it cool(er)

NOTE: The following message was sent by email on June 30, 2015 to all employees.

Dear colleague,

While weather events at Shoreline Community College usually refer to snow, current conditions are a reminder that, occasionally, it gets hot here, too.

During the days of July 1-2, Human Resources is providing  these tips and guidelines that may help get through:

  • Take care: All employees should make a conscious effort to ensure proper hydration and ventilation, and take regular breaks as needed in cooler areas of the campus (PUB and Library recommended) without disrupting work or other activities in those areas.
  • Take annual leave: Any employee who works in a College office without air conditioning may submit annual leave July 1-2, for any hours the individual is uncomfortable working due to the heat. If the employee has a health condition that is affected by the heat, sick leave may be used for necessary time away.
  • Take a break: Employees who choose to remain at work during this exceptionally hot weather can take an extra 10-minute break every 2-hours during the work day to ensure proper hydration and, if needed, move to a “cooling zone” (PUB or Library) before returning to work. PLEASE NOTE: Employees are not authorized to consolidate these breaks by combining them with any other break or lunch.
  • Make a move: When feasible and with supervisor permission, employees may temporarily move to a cooler place to work on campus. TSS has arranged for computer workstations in Room 4106 to be available to employees looking for a cooler place to work. TSS has additional stations identified. Please contact Ellen at x6936 for additional information.

Depending on the forecast, these measures will be reviewed.

Sincerely,

Stephen P. Smith

VP for Human Resources and Legal Affairs

Actions on ‘Acting’ part of efforts to add predictability

“Acting, interim, provisional, temporary, pro tem, stopgap, short-term, fill-in, caretaker, transitional, makeshift, improvised, impromptu.”

“I wanted to better understand the reason for the number of people we had with ‘acting’ or ‘interim’ attached to their title; some for more than a year, some for several years,” said Cheryl Roberts, not long after assuming her role as president of Shoreline Community College in August, 2014.

“’Acting’ and ‘interim’ can be important tools to bridge gaps in staffing or to get in sync with the hiring cycle. Allowing the designation to go on too long isn’t fair to the person or healthy for our college.”

Roberts asked members of the Executive Leadership Team to review those positions filled by employees with “acting” in their title and make determinations on how to proceed. In all, seven positions were reviewed and in all cases, the person holding the position was appointed to permanent status.

On the academic side of the college, two of the more visible positions that moved to permanent status were Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and Dean of Humanities. Bob Francis accepted an appointment to the vice president position in October. The choice adds stability to the key position that had been in flux for more than a year. For the past two years Kathie Hunt’s title had been Acting Dean of Humanities. Her permanent appointment took effect on Dec. 1.

Other employees who recently have moved from acting to permanent status, and the effective date, include:

  • Jennifer Fenske, Manager of Financial Services, July 1
  • Mary Kelemen, Executive  Director of Auxiliary& Logistical Support Services, Oct. 16
  • Stuart Trippel, Executive Director of Business & Student Support Services , Oct. 16
  • Leah Pearce, Director of Bookstore, Dec. 16
  • Veronica Zura, Director of Personnel, Nov. 11

Roberts said she’s asking that “acting” and “interim” be used in a more deliberate way in the future. “We want to define those terms so that the implications and timelines are clear to all,” she said.

Executive Leadership Team members include Roberts, Francis, Vice President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs Stephen Smith, Executive Director for Business, Student Support Services and Technology Support Services Stuart Trippel, Executive Director for Auxiliary and Logistical Support Services Mary Kelemen, Executive Director for International Education Diana Sampson and Special Assistant to the President for Communications and Marketing Jim Hills.

Joining the group in January will be new Executive Director of Budget/Capital Dawn Vinberg.
