Happy Spring Quarter!

Here’s a few updates regarding eBikes and rebates:

WA State DOT E-Bike Rebate Program

WE-bike is an instant rebate program that helps Washington residents purchase certain cycling equipment and electric bicycles. The application will open Wed. 4/9-Wed. April 23 (at 12pm). More than $4 million is available for instant rebates of either $300 or $1,200 per person.

Pedal Forward Shoreline

Pedal Forward Shoreline is a program that will provide around 100 free e-bikes to residents who live in a select area of Shoreline (map attached). If selected, you’ll receive: An e-bike (with front & rear lights), a helmet, reflective vest, bike lock, and access to e-bike safety classes. Application is open now-Fri. 4/25.

City of Shoreline Scooter and Bike Share Pilot Program

Lime Bikes and Scooters are now available in Shoreline (via Lime App). A 10% discount is offered for wearing a helmet while riding.

Incident Report: Hate Speech on Campus

Good afternoon, 

This is a difficult message to send, especially after all the hard work and unity we’ve shown during the challenges of the past couple of weeks. On Thursday, January 30th, a staff member was approached in our all-gender bathroom in the 9000 Building and was harassed by a community member who expressed statements that were rooted in hate towards our LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities. Security was immediately contacted, and the individual was escorted, and issued a verbal no trespass order. Shoreline Police were contacted, but the individual had already left by the time they arrived. 

It’s crucial to call this incident what it is—plain and simple, it’s hate speech. We stand in solidarity with our colleague and reaffirm that hate speech has no place on our campus. This type of hate speech is not in alignment with the mission and values of Shoreline Community College, and we denounce any such acts that we encounter both now and in the future.  We will continue to work with our Safety & Security team on how we can ensure a swift response to incidents like this one.  

We are a college comprised of educators and learners who deeply value one another. Our campus must be a place where everyone can thrive, work, and learn without fear of hate encroaching on our shared environment.  

If you are ever made to feel unsafe by the actions of a community member, please contact Campus Public Safety at (206) 235-5860. Additionally, The Office of DEIA, in collaboration with HR, will be revitalizing our Bias Response Team. This team will be dedicated to reviewing incidents like these, recommending training and college responses that are in alignment with our values and the needs of the SCC community. You are encouraged to report any and all biased incidents using our online reporting form

Campus Safety:  

We appreciate the ongoing work of the Office of Safety and Security, and their commitment to being a supportive partner in reporting and addressing bias and incidents of hate. In response to this incident, they will do more frequent monitoring of all-gender restrooms to ensure they are a safe and welcoming space for all. 

Office of DEIA:  

As mentioned before, The Office of DEIA will be convening a regular monthly BIAS response team dedicated to reviewing incidents like these. 

Our Office of DEIA will be working with our State Board Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Officer to create training on how to approach incidents like this one, giving our team the tools needed to better prepare and address hate speech. 

College Community:  

We ask all members of Shoreline Community College to stay aware of their surroundings and actively support efforts to report any observed or known bias.   

Shoreline Community College remains committed to our LGBTQIA+ community, our Latinx/e Community, and all immigrant communities who are a vital part of our diverse campus.

As a reminder, here at Shoreline we participate in the Washington State Employee Assistance Program (EAP).  Employees may access services and support at any time through the Employee Assistance Program at 877-313-4455.  All covered employees and their household adult family members have access to crisis counseling and referrals, no matter the time of day and including weekends and holidays.

Vehicle Prowls on Campus – 01/08/2025

Dear Campus Community,

The evening of January 8th, at approximately 10:00pm, Campus Security was notified of a vehicle prowl that occurred in the student parking west of Building 1300. A second person came forward this afternoon, January 9th, reporting that their vehicle had also been prowled. If anyone else had their vehicles prowled but has not yet reported it, please contact the on-duty Campus Security Officer at 206-235-5860 to generate a report. 

There is currently nothing to indicate that this criminal activity will become a pattern, this notice is just to keep you informed. Campus Security has uniformed Campus Security Officers on campus 24-hours a day. To report suspicious activity, call 206-235-5860 (or call the Security Office during business hours at 206-546-4633). Listed below are some tips that can help to keep you and your vehicle safe on campus.

  • If you haven’t already, save the after-hours Campus Security number in your phone now: 206-235-5860.
  • Park in high traffic and well-lit areas.
  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle and remove items from view.
    • Even if a bag only has dirty gym clothes in it, a prowler may break in hoping it contains valuables.
  • If you observe a suspicious person or vehicle on campus, call security.
  • Always keep your phone and photo ID on your person in the event that you need to contact assistance.
  • If your vehicle is unused for more than 48 hours, check on it and move it to another parking space so that it does not appear abandoned or unattended.

Out of Service- Bldg. 6000 (Cedar) Elevator

Dear Campus Community,

The Building 6000 (Cedar) elevator is currently out of order, likely do to our recent storm and loss of power. An elevator tech has been requested on an emergency service call and is expected to respond to campus today. We do not have an estimated time of arrival as many service providers deal with regular and emergency service calls while our region recovers from our recent storm.

Power Outage Follow-up- Clean Our Your Work Fridges

Good morning everyone, 

I hope that everyone is doing OK after the power outages and wind many of us experienced.  I wanted to take a minute before lunchtime to quickly go over a couple of follow-up items to consider 

  • Personal/Lunchroom Fridges:
    1. We recommend cleaning out any perishable items from your personal and lunchroom fridges.  That could include lunch meats, leftovers, frozen meals etc.  The power at the College went out around 7:00pm Tuesday night 11/19 and was off until right around 4pm yesterday 11/20. 
  • Avanti
    1. The fridges in the Avanti market are currently out of order as Avanti works to replace the perishable items.  It will take a couple of days to restock as they have several clients who were also hit with power outages.
