Waves of Gratitude

A Wave of Gratitude to Melanie Meyer of Health Information Technology for Inclusive Excellence.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate Melanie Meyer from the Health Informatics & Information Management (HIIM) department for achieving another incredible milestone.

Melanie has recently certified another course—HIIM 219: Health Care Statistics! The HIIM department leads the way with the most certified courses, and Melanie continues to ensure that every course in the department meets the highest standards. Certification requires meeting 119 rigorous standards from the Washington Quality Course Design Checklist, demonstrating a commitment to high-quality, student-centered learning.

Faculty can also get their courses certified by attending the 4-week Online and Hybrid Quality Course Design Institute, where we focus on inclusion, equity, accessibility, and effective course design. Certification isn’t just for a single course—faculty can continue certifying multiple courses over time, just like Melanie has done.

Certified courses at Shoreline that meet these 119 standards are also recognized and certified by the state. Faculty who achieve certification will receive official digital badges from the state, recognizing their dedication to high-quality course design.

I am an Instructional Designer dedicated to enhancing online and hybrid education by ensuring faculty have the tools and knowledge to create high-quality, student-centered courses. I designed and facilitate the Online and Hybrid Quality Course Design Institute, a 4-week professional development program that helps faculty align their courses with 119 rigorous standards from the Washington Quality Course Design Checklist.

Beyond course design, I have worked closely with state-level organizations to ensure that faculty and their certified courses receive official recognition and certification. Through this collaboration, faculty who meet certification standards not only enhance their courses for student success but also receive state-recognized digital badges honoring their commitment to excellence in teaching. – Brandon Fryman, eLearning.

I appreciate the significant amount of time that Ric spent with a student, tackling a very unique problem. Ric was, as always, patient and caring with this student and helped them through each step. Thank you for going above and beyond! – Miranda Levy, Student Accessibility Services.

A Wave of Gratitude to Jason Brandon for Inclusive Excellence, Respect and Student Engagement.

Thank you to Director of TSS Jason Brandon for going above and beyond, inviting a struggling student into his office as a team assisted them with solving some complex problems, and staying with the student for quite a long time. Jason listened and put the student first always, keeping them calm and making them feel safe. Thank you, Jason and the whole TSS team! – Miranda Levy, Student Accessibility Services.

Wave of Gratitude for Amy Easton

A Wave of Gratitude to Amy Easton of The Biology Department for her Inclusive Excellence Respect, Student Engagement and Community Engagement

This week sees the end of an era; our beloved biology technician Amy Easton will be retiring after supporting countless STEM classes, faculty, and students. With her transition into a lot more fun hours and a lot fewer bespoke disasters to fix, it is a great time for us to think back on all the times that her calm, insightful leadership has made the difference.

Amy signs her emails with ‘Yours in Science’, and she has truly lived science throughout her time at Shoreline. You will not find a more caring advocate for students or a better organized and prepared professional. For all of us, putting students in positions to ask their own meaningful scientific questions and seeing themselves in the jobs they will have someday starts with years of clear-visioned logistics and inquiry.

I’m going to keep this short, because Amy has always stayed true to the work and recoils from the spotlights she deserves. If you come to the grand opening of Cedar (and you should! this Thursday 4-6pm!), you will walk into teaching and teamwork spaces that owe a huge debt of gratitude to Amy Easton and everything that she has done for all of us. Congratulations, Amy, and thank you from the inferior aspects of our left ventricles. ~Submitted Anonymously
