50 years ago President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act which banned discrimination by race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This legislation accelerated a movement to extend the same protection to people with disabilities. This resulted in the adoption of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in 1970’s and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 providing the same rights and protections.
