Success Coaching Statement for Syllabi

As we are wrapping up fall quarter we as Success Coaches would like to thank you for the collaboration experienced in supporting students and their success. We look forward to continuing to partner with you!

Faculty have requested a statement about Success Coaching to be provided on their syllabi and we thank you for this opportunity! Please feel free to use the following statement:

Similar to coaching programs used by entrepreneurs, CEOs, and professional athletes, Shoreline Community College provides students with Success Coaching to help you develop your academic skills. Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that works with you on study skills, goal setting, time management, balancing life’s priorities, and organization. Coaches also help you identify and connect to other resources. Coaching is not counseling, advising, or tutoring.

Thank you,

Bob Francis, the current Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs has said he will retire in June, 2016. Francis was a faculty member and dean before stepping in as Acting Vice President in May, 2014 and then as Vice President in October, 2014.

The Executive Vice President position “will develop and coordinate the College’s Academic and Student Engagement strategies creating an intentional environment supporting Student Success,” according to the position description posted by the Association of Community College Trustees, which is handling the recruitment process.

The Executive Vice President will report directly to President Cheryl Roberts and serve on the Executive Team. The position is the Chief Academic Officer for the College and serves as the senior administrative official for Student Affairs, according to the ACCT listing.

Roberts said in October, 2014 that this search would begin about now to be aligned with the traditional higher-education hiring cycle.

Shoreline’s Mayumi Steinmetz awarded Evergreen State College Teacher Excellence Award

MayumiSteinmentCongratulations to Mayumi Steinmetz, faculty in the social sciences division at Shoreline Community College, who is a recipient of The Evergreen State College 2015-16 Teacher Excellence Award.

To see the letter of award from The Evergreen State College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Michael Zimmerman, click here.

The award honors instructors who “have had a significant impact on the lives of students.”

The student who nominated Steinmetz wrote, “Steinmetz-sensei is a dynamic teacher. Her classes are exciting, with a variety of activities. Languages can be awkward and embarrassing for adult learners, particularly when students are required to learn three brand-new alphabets! Steinmetz-sensei helps put her students at ease with smiles and jokes and clever mneumonics that make memorization a pleasure.”

Steinmetz teaches Japanese language and East Asian studies classes at Shoreline.

Congratulations on this honor, Mayumi. We’re thrilled you’re a part of the Shoreline Nation Phin Pham!
