Love it or hate it? Feedback on Day at a Glance

art of communication
Hey campus community – we’re trying something new, and we need your feedback. What if we started rounding up all the events happening in one day into one post (like the one immediately below this post) so if you wanted to know what was happening on campus TODAY you would know by clicking on one post rather than scrolling and hunting through several? Would that be OK? Or do you prefer your posts À la carte?

Furthermore, what if we did a weekly digest that told you what was coming up each week and then also did a daily roundup each day? What would you think of that?

Also, do you like to see posts relevant to students so you can try and communicate and reinforce that info to them, or would you rather just see what’s relevant to you as an employee of the college?

We’d love to meet your communications needs, so please give us some feedback (seriously). Email thoughts, criticisms, suggestions, accolades, and anything we didn’t think to ask to Rachel in PIO at revans@shoreline.edu. We’ll take all your thoughts into consideration (and probably ask for more in the future) as we try to figure out how best to serve the campus community.

Thank you for your time!

It seems like many posts are duplicated for staff/students/news so combining them is a good idea – plus it is nice to know what is going on with other groups on campus. – would also same you valuable page space. I like the weekly roundup and daily synopsis idea. Too much type is boring so no one clicks on the article unless the title is interesting – visuals in the roundup/daily synopsis might help, like the old format.
I like the mock up idea!

A weekly digest would be good. And more advance notice of events, when possible, would be great.

A simpler format with the daily post of what’s going on in the campus community in one column would be great. Visitors could scroll down on the same page to see what’s happening the coming week. That way it truly would be a day/week at a glance. Beyond the titles and brief description, interested people could click on the item for more detailed information.

I would argue this daily announcement should go out to all staff and students alike. Students will disregard what’s not applicable, but everyone would be getting the same information and there would be no duplication issue as exists now with staff getting DAAG, Shoreline Today and News.

If I could make one more suggestion. Since the percentage of staff/faculty at present is well below 50% who are actually clicking on the DAAG email announcement, asking for input on changes will not elicit much response. It looks like only a few people have given their opinions so far. An alternate approach would be to come up with a few mock-ups of different DAAG formats and send it out via campus mail for a vote. Student government could man a table in the PUB to get student feedback and an announcement could be put in the Ebbtide newspaper. I imagine there are many other ways to get ideas and buy-in before a final decision is made on making DAAG more relevant and used.

I appreciate PIO’s work in reaching out to improve communication on campus and connect our disparate populations.

    • Awesome suggestions, Bob! Thanks for taking the time to give us such a thoughtful reply. We have talked about other ways we can solicit feedback, and you’re spot on with your suggestions on how to go about reaching a larger cross section of the campus population for their ideas and opinions. And we’ll look into how to better organize the posts so that people can get a true day/week at a glance view in an easy-to-digest format. Thanks!

The weekly digest and a short daily mail would be nice (this ways you don’t have to repeat the same events throughout the week). Also, I do like seeing student related events as well.

  5. I like the idea of one daily post with all the events that day and the weekly digest (both). I also like to see posts relevant to students so we can reinforce.

    • Thank you for your thoughts, Rosemary. We’re hearing a lot of folks say they’d like to see what’s relevant to students and that they like the daily and weekly digests idea, so we’ll take that into account. Thank you for taking the time to let us know!

  6. Not happy with the DAAG daily mail format right now and lately only check it 1x per week, or less. 😦 Some kind of change would be great!

I’d love to see: Weekly Digest view, with a “view change” button to Monthly or back again. Of course, in the weekly or monthly view, we could click on any daily item for more info.

Perhaps there could also be “focus” buttons to remove/add posts relevant only to students, only to staff, or only to faculty.

    • Great suggestions, Kent. Thank you for the feedback. If it’s helpful to you in the interim until we can put everyone’s feedback to work and make some changes, there is a way to toggle back and forth between day, week, and month view on the college calendar page found on the homepage of the intranet here: http://www.shoreline.edu/calendars/default.aspx

We hope that helps a bit for now, and we’ll try to get a revamp of DAAG with some of your other suggestions put into action soon!
