The college has been planning several projects during the Fall and Winter Quarters and now that it’s Spring, you’ve seen some of the construction underway in the PUB 9000 Building. Here is an update on the many projects that will continue through Spring and into Summer. During this construction season, we will do what we do best, help students and visitors find their way around.
PUB Information Desk and Casual Student Area
A custom-made reclaimed wood information desk is presently being installed and the furniture is scheduled to be delivered before May 10th. This area will become an information hub for prospective, new, and current students, as well as all our campus and the larger communities we serve. Please join us for a Grand Opening Celebration on May 16th at 2pm in the PUB Main Lobby.
4000 Building Summer 2016 Remodel
The design work is well underway for a remodel of the 4000 building that will bring a renewed sense of the building as a place for academic achievement. The main entrance and Library Services will be upgraded, along with a new academic student learning area located inside the main entrance. Other improvements will include updated lighting, colors, and furniture. The main/2nd floor (4200) and 3rd floor (4300) will be closed to students and staff during the summer. The ground floor (4100) will remain open for access to TSS, the student computer lab, Drama/Film department offices, and the Black Box Theater. Student ID services will be relocated and planning is underway.
Many other services will be temporarily relocated for the summer. Please plan on receiving Library Services at a relocated service center in the PUB on the main floor in what is now the photography gallery (aka the fishbowl), room 9203. Here’s where students can receive a limited set of services currently found on the main/2nd floor of the 4000 building. For the summer, the Math Learning Center will be located in 2202. The Writing and Learning Center will be located in 1504, and Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Services will be coordinated out of another location that is still under discussion.
Come Fall, the 4000 building will re-open with Library Services, the Math Learning Center, The Writing and Learning Studio, and Tutoring all located in the updated space. Future phases of work are also being planned and will continue throughout the upcoming academic year.
1600 Theater Remodel
The Theater Lobby will also undergo a summer remodel with some updates inside the main auditorium as well. The building will be closed to staff and students and reopen in the fall with a mid-century theater flavor suited to showcase our programs and community events. Some painting and refreshing will be completed before SIFF (The Seattle International Film Festival comes to campus in late May).
FOSS First Floor
As you may have read, we are combining Counseling Services, currently on the second floor of FOSS, with the WorkForce Team located on the first floor of FOSS. (link to prior DAAG article here). This construction is scheduled to start after the July 4th holiday and be completed for Fall Quarter. WorkForce services will be available in the 4100 Computer Lab for Summer Quarter.
And, some Roofs
1600 Theater Roof – There will be patching and sealing done on roof penetrations throughout the 1600 hexagon portion, and a complete renewal of the lower square portion that transitions over to the 1500 building. This is the flat top of the actual roof itself. The concrete composite shingles on the exterior sides will be replaced with metal wall panels very much like what is currently on the 1700 building. Some landscaping and other touch ups will occur to refresh the exterior of the building. The pagoda/Mansard style will be maintained. The work window will be June 13th to mid-September.
1900 Parent Child Center – Originally just a roof renewal, the project now includes HVAC installations to bring much needed A/C to the PCC. There will be equipment and material staging around the building in mid to late June, with work wrapping up very close to the start of Fall quarter, perhaps a few weeks into October. The building will remain open and functional. The contractor will coordinate closely with the PCC staff to time material moves with the children’s schedules so that no activity between ground and roof is occurring while the children are outside and that work does not occur during nap time.
