Living our Shared Commitment to an Inclusive College Community

Dear Colleague,

The recent U.S. presidential election process has been highly contentious and has evoked many strong emotions from people of all beliefs. Like the rest of the country, Shoreline students and employees are experiencing a range of feelings about the results of the election.

Just as this nation must continue to embrace its commitment to its democratic ideals of liberty, equality, and justice, so must all of us at Shoreline Community College uphold our commitment to being an inclusive campus community.

This is an opportunity to live up to our Community Standard:

Shoreline Community College is a place for students, employees, and the community to pursue excellence in education in an environment dedicated to equity, inclusiveness, and self-reflection. We value respectful, dynamic interactions and lively discussion. We strive to create an environment where everyone is supported and valued. Shoreline Community College does not tolerate hateful, violent, or discriminatory actions that target any person or group based on their beliefs, customs, identity, or affiliations. When one of us is diminished, all of us are diminished.

A core principle of our college is that everyone who comes to this campus feels respected and supported. We are a community of learners who engage and invite robust, respectful conversation. This means we come together to listen to each other and move forward with respect for those presenting opinions that may differ from our own.

I feel honored to work at a college that embraces learning and respect, and I look forward to working with all of you to ensure Shoreline will always remain a welcoming place for all of us.

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D
