Campus events for the week of Nov. 13: IEW 2017, GAC panels, and more

These are the events happening around campus for the week of Mon., Nov. 13. It’s International Education Week (IEW) 2017, so make sure to check out some of the fun and informative IEW events happening around campus.  

Mon., Nov. 13

Voting for IEW Photo Contest Begins: International Education, 9302
Mon., Nov. 13 – Wed., Nov. 15
Exhibition of the top 10 photos selected by the judges submitted to the IEW Photo Contest will be displayed during Nov. 13-16 IEW events or at the International Education department located on the PUB 3rd floor, 9302.

Public voting will begin on Mon., Nov. 13 at 9am and end on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5pm. Each person can only vote once on their favorite three photos at the exhibition. Winners will be announced on November 16.

College Rep visits: Table in PUB
Mon., Nov. 13: 11am-1pm
Representatives from Northern Arizona University and Washington State University-Everett will be on Shoreline’s campus to meet with interested students. Reps will discuss topics such as academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures for their college. They can answer other questions students may have too.

Employer of the Day – UPS: PUB Lobby Info Desk
Mon., Nov. 13: 11am-1pm
A rep from UPS will be on Shoreline’s campus to talk to students interested in applying for positions with the company. From the employer: If you’re ready for hourly/seasonal work and maybe something more, the smart route is at UPS. Neighborhood Community Meeting: PUB 9208

Please join us for a neighborhood conversation to learn about the College’s future plans and have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to College leadership. Open to all. Parking is free. We hope to see you there!

Tues., Nov. 14

IEW Study Abroad Fair & Passport Day: PUB Lobby
Tues., Nov. 14: 11:30am-1:30pm
Come to learn about our study abroad programs offered at Shoreline. Staff from the Seattle Passport Agency will be on hand to answer questions about the process of getting a U.S. passport.

Wed., Nov. 15

IEW International Myths and Tales Panel: PUB 9208
Wed., Nov. 15: 12:30-2:30pm
Come to share or listen to some interesting myths and tales from other countries or cultures. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

Write-in-Wednesdays: Library
Wed., Nov. 15: 4:30-7:30pm
The library is hosting a writing space especially for those participating in National Novel Writing Month. We have outlets, wifi, comfy chairs, and participants can log into the computers to work on their novels.

IEW Language Tables: PUB Main Lobby
Thurs., Nov. 16: 11:30am-1:30pm
A one-stop way to learn some useful words and sentences quickly in other languages!

Deep Roots Garden Work Party: North of 2700 building
Thurs., Nov. 16: 12-2pm
Help get the Deep Roots Community Garden ready for the winter. On Thurs., Nov. 16 we’ll be laying wood chips in the paths and doing some general cleanup. Come by anytime between noon and 2 pm.

The Deep Roots Community Garden grows food for the campus food pantry and a neighborhood food bank. Get involved in growing food for our students and neighbors. If you can’t make the work party but would like to be notified of future events, please contact Judy Penn ( or Adria Magrath (

U.S.-Russia Relations: A New Cold War?: PUB 9208
Thurs., Nov. 16: 7-8:30pm
U.S.-Russian relations seem to have reached a low point since the end of the Cold War in 1990. Confrontations in Europe and the Middle East and accusations of Russian meddling in U.S. elections have produced a “tenuous” bilateral relationship. Is it the new/old normal?

Speaker: Dr. Bradley J. Murg, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of Global Development Studies, Seattle Pacific University; and faculty member at The Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies.

Music Student Performances: Off-campus at Caffè Musica
Thurs., Nov. 16: 7-9pm
Join us for a cozy evening of music at this intimate, creative venue. Performances will feature talented music students who are currently enrolled in a variety of music programs at Shoreline Community College. Selected performers will include both vocalists and instrumentalists.

Discounts on entrees and beverages are available to Shoreline Community College students, staff, and faculty. Valid student ID is required.

Fri., Nov. 17

IEW Badminton Tournament: Main Gym (3000 bldg)
Fri., Nov. 17: 9am-12pm
The IEW 2017 Badminton Tournament is open to ALL Shoreline students to sign up and join. Students may sign up at IEW events or online.

The tournament will be in the Main Gym (3000 Building) on Friday, November 17 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Both you and your partner must be available during this time in order to be able to sign up and compete.

Fri., Nov. 17: 7-9pm
Men’s Basketball will take on Christian Faith in an Exhibition game at home. Come cheer on our Phins to victory!

Sat., Nov. 18

Men’s Basketball will take on Highline College at home. Come cheer on our Phins to victory!
