Message from President Roberts: Enrollment and Budget Update

Dear Colleague,

As I shared in my fall communication to employees, after two academic years of solid domestic enrollment growth, the College experienced a decline in spring and summer that continues this fall quarter. Now that tenth-day numbers are in, we know that our domestic enrollment is down by 7% compared to last fall. I’d like to give you some information about what actions we, as a College, are taking to address this trend.

While we know there are some external forces beyond our control that affect enrollment, such as high employment in the Seattle area and difficulties with our international students securing visas, the College is making plans to ensure we are headed in a direction to grow and retain our student enrollment.

The Executive Team is working with deans, directors, and other College staff, as well as our faculty, to gather information and examine the root causes of our recent drop in enrollment, rather than simply addressing symptoms. Once we’ve completed some deeper analysis, our next steps will be shared at our Fall Campus Update on November 30. Please plan to attend to learn more.

In the meantime, know that the Board of Trustees has approved our operating budget for the year at the same level as last year. This week, departments will see this year’s budget information loaded into FMS Query. As always, even though amounts have been budgeted, we need to be intentional with our spending and focus on expenditures that support our strategic goals and help students succeed.

In the coming weeks, I’ll also share some additional enrollment and budget information in Day-At-A-Glance (DAAG), so please watch for those messages.

There is so much we can do to address this situation, and we’ve had recent successes when we pull together. We know when we collectively work together to solve challenges, good things happen for our students, and thus for the College.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

President
