Dear Colleague,
Today as we celebrate the joy of commencement, we are reminded still of uncertainty in the world around us.
Earlier this week, President Trump threatened the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. This deeply troubling announcement strikes at the very heart of our mission as a community college – to serve as an open-door institution where all students can achieve their educational dreams, regardless of documentation. With this in mind, we reaffirm our current practice in serving undocumented students:
- The college has no legal obligation or affirmative duty to enforce federal immigration law. Accordingly, we do not provide information to others without a lawfully issued subpoena or court order.
- College security officers do not question people about their immigration status and do not detain people because they are undocumented.
- We do not make admission decisions based on immigration status, and we do not request immigration documentation except as needed to determine eligibility for resident tuition.
- Consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the college will not release protected student information without a lawfully issued subpoena or court order.
We realize that President Trump’s announcement may cause fear and anxiety on our campus. If you are experiencing anxiety, we encourage you to access the free and confidential counseling resources available.
- Employees may contact the Washington State Employee Assistance Program at 877-313-4455
- Students may contact the Shoreline Community College Counseling Center at 206-546-4594
We remain committed to providing a safe, civil, inclusive, and supportive environment for each and every student who comes through our doors in search of new opportunities and a bright future. You are a member of our campus community and you are welcome here.
Respectfully,
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President
