Introducing Wendy Coates- New Executive Director- Advancement & Foundation

This is a headshot of Wendy.

Shoreline Community College is excited to announce Wendy Coates as the new Executive Director- Advancement & Foundation.

Wendy Coates is an accomplished and dedicated nonprofit executive with a strong track record growing philanthropic and community support. For the past 10 years, Coates served as the Executive Director for the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation. During her time there, she was instrumental in planning, funding, and launching programs that enhanced the quality of life for people in the final stages of their lives. Other milestones accomplished during her time as Executive Director include unprecedented growth in giving and donor retention, improved engagement and satisfaction of board members, the creation and implementation of fiscal policies and procedures that ensured integrity and transparency, and having the Hospice agency named the “Number One Place to Work” by Modern Healthcare Magazine.

Prior to her career in hospice care, Wendy worked as the Development Director at the Olympic College Foundation where she was part of a team that raised 8 million dollars in support of student scholarships, and helped to create the student emergency grant program which provided resources that helped students stay in school.

“It’s an honor to be part of this mission dedicated to student success. I look forward to working with the community to grow philanthropic support and ensure that Shoreline remains financially accessible for everyone wanting a quality education.”

Wendy grew up north of Boston, MA, lived in Alaska for 10 years, and is currently relocating from Anacortes, WA with her husband, Stephen, and their silly pup, Roxy. She has served on several nonprofit boards, and was a councilperson on the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights. Wendy attended Boston University (where she met her husband Stephen) and holds an MA in English from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She recently achieved her PADI SCUBA certification and dreams of swimming with a whale shark someday.

System Outage Update 6/2/23

Good morning!

“June is bustin’ out all over!!!!”  Anyone else a big musical fan, or am I in my own little corner over here? If you are a musical fan, feel free to reply to me, and name that show! If you’re not a fan, then you can just ignore the previous three sentences, and we can find other things to agree on. 😊 Either way, summer is coming!

Now, on to the updates! Today I have several ransomware related updates to share with you as TSS has been making a lot of great progress around campus.

Network Update

TSS has made great progress in the process of rebuilding a secure and robust network. A huge thanks to TSS for the many, many hours put into the ongoing work on this project!

HVAC and Environmental Controls

The ransomware incident impacted all aspects of our network, which included the environmental controls and HVAC system. For the past couple of months, we have had to manually make adjustments. However, I am happy to report that those controls are now completely up and online again.

Extra Help!

We are in the final stages of engaging MoxFive, an outside contractor who will be working with TSS directly to assist with the rebuild of Shoreline’s systems. This will allow the process to move much faster so you will continue to see a lot of great progress happening throughout the summer.

New Telephone System Coming Soon to an Office Near You

Prior to the ransomware incident, TSS was working to finalize a plan for a more modern phone solution thus removing our current antiquated phones. This system would be replaced by Microsoft Teams. This process had to be put on hold as we worked through the initial stages of the ransomware incident and the recovery process. However, we are now ready to move forward again, so you will be receiving more information and a timeline for implementation soon.

Password Reset

As part of our new security measures, TSS will be rolling out a process for more frequent password updates for Shoreline faculty, staff, and students. However, so as not to disrupt the Spring quarter currently in progress, this will not happen until after the quarter has ended.  You will be receiving more information on this in the coming weeks, but we wanted to give you a heads-up that this will be coming in the near future.

Ransomware Investigation Update

Last week we were able to share that the identity of the threat actor organization is Royal.  We have also received several questions from the community about the ransom amount. As a reminder, this is an amount covered by our insurance, but we can now share that the amount was $228,000. It is important to note that this amount was reached through extensive negotiation. This was a difficult decision, but enabled Shoreline to keep the information from our campus community safe and helped to expedite our recovery process.

That’s all I have for today. Enjoy your afternoon!

Events and News

Good afternoon, folks- hope all are well! Toward the end of last week, I had the chance to greet some of our incoming Dolphins from our area high schools. I did my best to engage but honestly these teens are a tough crowd! 😊 In all seriousness though, it was great to see some new folks coming in for the fall and have an opportunity to brag about Shoreline and the great work that you all do.

This week I have been with some of our amazing folks from International Education at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators conference in Washington DC.  It has been fun meeting new colleagues and seeing all the amazing work that our team (here with me – Samira Pardanani, Yushin Wung, Lisa Maroni and Cynthia Okawara) does to bring the world to Shoreline! The time has been very productive and has given me some good ideas for future collaborations to support our students. It’s also inspiring to meet with people from all over the world who share an educational vision and respect for humanity.

One standout moment for me from this week, was a meeting with representatives from the United Arab Emirates Education center here in Washington DC.  We have about 8 students at our college through this partnership and we met with them to discuss progress, support, and potential future students being placed at Shoreline. I really enjoyed meeting these representatives and discussing our partnership! We are the first Community College in the country to host these government sponsored students.

See you back on campus next week!

Institutional Research (in PIE Planning & Institutional Effectiveness)

New Student Registration for Summer and Fall began May 22, 2023. The first day of summer instruction is July 3, 2023. You can view current and archived Daily Enrollment Reports here: Daily Enrollment Reports (Public):

  • Summer 2023
  • Fall 2023

Caveats: it is still early for Fall enrollment and due to ransomware, we do not have access to past year same-day comparison (even if we did, fraudulent students in Summer/Fall 2022 would make this a bad comparison).

A link to these reports always can be found at the Shoreline Support Center > Employee > Daily Enrollment Report.
