The Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) Support Staff is happy to announce the relaunch of what was formerly known as the AANAPISI Program. The AANAPISI Program will now be known as WAVES (Worthy of Achievement, Validation, Empowerment, and Success).
WAVES is a program for domestic Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students at Shoreline Community College. Our focus is removing barriers for domestic AANHPI students who are furthest from educational justice.
WAVES represents the ups and downs in the journey of being an AANHPI student in the college system while rooting ourselves in the belief that we are enough, and our ancestors have equipped us with the tools to rise in academic and career achievement.
WAVES is a support program that centers retention strategies needed for success throughout students’ identity development and empowerment in community college. At the heart of the program, WAVES aims to increase academic support by stabilizing students in the community as it guides its students on a clear pathway to success.
WAVES’ *NEW* services and benefits include (but is not limited to): AANHPI designated support staff, cultural workshops and events, College 101 course (detailed below!), trauma and mental health support, peer tutors and mentors, and much more. The program also provides students with hands-on support in applying for AANHPI scholarships through APIA Scholars and leadership volunteer opportunities to help students get an advantage in the career field.
In Fall 2023, WAVES will be providing an AANHPI affinity College 101 course that explores nontraditional college success strategies (identity development with an Ethnic Studies approach, trauma supports, and advocacy work). This College 101 course also has embedded new student orientation, peer tutoring, peer mentors, and an opportunity to schedule an appointment with an advisor to complete an Education Plan.
We are also thrilled to announce WAVES’ community partners:
- University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Tides program
- City of Shoreline
- Japanese American Citizens League
- New Hope Counseling PLLC
- Korean Community Center in Shoreline
- Make Us Visible (WA Chapter)
- Seattle Academy
