Happy February all—hope your month is off to a good start. It has been a very busy week with a lot to report on!
I had a great day last week in Olympia Washington with Trustee Rebecca Ringer, former student (and current employee!) Mashaal Shameem and current student Isabella Briones. We thanked our legislators for their support for community colleges and for advocating for our system. The students were of course the superstars, and several of our legislative representatives commented on how impressive they were!
On Tuesday, we held the Edwin T. Pratt community event here on campus. It was a great event with presentations from our new Mayor Chris Roberts, Police Chief Kelly Park, poets Kilam Tel Aviv & E Mandisa Subira, & Jean Soliz & Ken Winnick who provided a brief history (in words and photos) of Edwin Pratt’s life. It was a moving event, and it was so wonderful to see so many people come out for it. Special thanks to the Black Heritage Society and the Urban League being a part of the event, for your continued work on social justice issues and for preserving Mr. Pratt’s legacy.
We also had King County, WA Councilmember Rod Dembowski and his chief of staff Kristina Logsdon visit campus with Trustees Rebecca Chan & Jamie Stark for visiting Shoreline Community College yesterday. We showed him our new Cedar x̌əpay̓ac building and he was VERY impressed with the space (and even got to meet Professor Keith Smith and a few students). He was also super pleased to see all the creative work going on at the Center for Education & Career Opportunities (CECO) program, as well as what we are doing in our automotive programs! We look forward to finding more ways to support the county and be better connected- hey, we are North King County after all!
In addition to that I had two meetings with presidents this week (one former, one current) for continued professional development and support. I really appreciate my colleagues taking time out to connect!

- Friday, March 15: the deadline for Area Reviews has been extended from March 1st to the 15th to allow areas time to create goals for 2024-25 that support the forthcoming Strategic Plan framework, which will be finalized in late February. In the meantime, prepare by reviewing the DRAFT Strategic Plan framework (and give feedback here).

Edwin T. Pratt Day of Remembrance
On the evening of Tuesday, January 30, 2024, Shoreline Community College hosted the City of Shoreline’s tribute to the life and legacy of Edwin T. Pratt. Mayor Chris Roberts read the official proclamation of January 30th as the Edwin T. Pratt Day of Remembrance. Mr. Pratt, one of the very first African American residents of the area that would become Shoreline, was the Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League and worked tirelessly toward the advancement civil rights in our community, including the desegregation of Seattle Public Schools and fair housing initiatives. Tragically, Mr. Pratt was assassinated in 1969, but his memory lives on in a growing number of tributes and memorials throughout the city, including the Shoreline Community College Foundation Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship for Students of Color.
Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who helped make Tuesday’s tribute to Edwin T. Pratt such a moving and wonderful event. Josh Krupke and Michelle Cimaroli deserve special notice for their efforts! – Wendy

Volunteers Needed
Enrollment is up and that means that scholarship applications are up as well! The Foundation is seeking volunteers to participate in the scholarship review committee. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to directly assist students in need. Let Wendy know if you want to participate wcoates@shoreline.edu.
Student Emergency Aid
Applications for student emergency assistance grants are now being processed by the Benefits Hub. If you are aware of a student in urgent need of support, please refer them to the Benefits Hub and have them fill out an Emergency Aid application.
Business & Administrative Services – Risk Management
Please take a few minutes to complete a short safety survey with questions about workplace safety! Each year, the DES State Office of Risk Management, together with the State Agency Safety Professionals Alliance (SASPA), administers the safety survey. The 2024 Safety Survey will be open to all employees through February 18, 2024.
Because many employees are now teleworking on a permanent basis, to some degree, the first question of this year’s survey allows employees to choose their current work environment from six options. This will allow employees to answer survey questions that are only pertinent to their work environment. The six options are:
- working from home 100%
- working in the field 100%*
- working in the office 100%
- hybrid home and office
- hybrid home and field*
- hybrid field and office*
*Field is any work environment that is not a home or conventional office, for example, instructional clinical locations.
The intent of the survey is to enhance our culture of worker safety. State agencies use survey results to develop a safety action plan for addressing the issues identified. Survey information will help the Office of Risk Management (Joe Mazur) evaluate our current safety program, identify gaps, and plan safety initiatives to enhance employee workplace safety.
The 2024 Safety Survey is anonymous. Results will be collected by the DES State Office of Risk Management, then tallied and sent in summary form to each state agency. Thank you for your participation, and please let Joe Mazur know if you have any questions.
