Well, I’m back! Last week I was out in Costa Rica catching up from vacation time from last year. It was great! I’m an animal lover, so seeing some up close was amazing! See below for one of our fun pics. Is that a smile?

I also had the opportunity to practice Spanish which was really great. People were very patient with us, and I think appreciated our attempt and learning. It really is Pura Vida!
This week is the first week of classes. I am very excited about being at the “Ask Me” booth today (though slightly less with the gloomy dark clouds in the forecast). The first week of the quarter is always so exciting. The Associated Student Government (ASG) and Student Life were out in full force yesterday with welcome goodies, fun, and connection. Hope your week is off to a good start.
I am playing a lot of catch up since I was out last week. There is a lot going on (and a mound of email as you can imagine). We also have second round Vice President-Student Services (VPSS) interviews and forums coming up, as well as Vice President-Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility (VPDEIA) first level interviews happening soon, so things are moving along well.
I do have some GOOD NEWS to report. Thanks to the great work of Joe Mazur and Gayla Hocker, we have finalized the contract with Black Coffee Northwest to bring them to campus. You may know that they have been very busy opening a space through Seattle colleges and making progress with a new locale in Seattle’s Central District. We are now working to make needed modifications to the cafeteria space—keep your eyes open for a welcome to SCC event in the next few months.
Next week I will have more to report, but for now it’s emails, catch up, accreditation, and strategic planning work. Hope to see you on campus!!
Cheers,
Jack

Foundation
Every Spring, the Shoreline Community College Foundation awards approximately 100 scholarships for the following academic year. Unlike the quarterly scholarship awards, academic year scholarships tend to have larger awards and twice the number of students applying. I am reaching out today to invite you to volunteer as a reviewer for our upcoming 24/25 academic year scholarships.
Because of your expertise and insight as a member of the SCC community, your participation will elevate and improve this process. Your help is a win for our donors, who so generously fund these opportunities, and for our students, who deserve thoughtful, insightful, and unbiased evaluation of their applications. When you volunteer as a reviewer, you play a crucial role in evaluating the applications of our students and recommending those who demonstrate exceptional determination and potential. Your recommendations will help guide the selection process, ultimately leading to life-changing opportunities for deserving candidates. Moreover, reviewing scholarship applications offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the aspirations and ambitions of our students. It allows you to engage with their stories, achievements, and future goals in a new and meaningful way.
The time commitment for this volunteer opportunity is flexible – we estimate about 5 hours total between April 1 and April 22. The number of actual scholarships you will evaluate will depend on the number of applications and the number of evaluators we recruit. We will provide detailed instructions and guidelines to assist you throughout the review process. Best of all, you can log into the reviewer portal from anywhere.
If you are interested in volunteering as a reviewer or have any questions about the process, please reach out to Michelle Cimaroli at mcimaroli@shoreline.edu.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to support our students.
