This week, I was very fortunate to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Shoreline College students Atanu Baishnab and Camelia Liang, who were named to the 2026 All-Washington Academic Team – placing them among the top students in the state (in the top 16 in fact). Selected for their academic excellence and compelling work in engineering and nursing, their recognition reflects not only their dedication, but also the mentorship of faculty like Audrey Reuter and the continued support of our Board, including Trustee Rebecca Chan. Congratulations to both students for representing Shoreline with such distinction.
I also had the opportunity to engage with the arts on campus through a compelling new media exhibition in the 1000 Building Art Gallery, featuring artists Chris Wille and Brian Franklin of the group Sphere. The exhibit explored the intersection of technology, data, and the environment – inviting our community to reflect on everything from satellite systems to digital networks and climate-responsive art. Really innovative and interesting!
At the state level, I joined colleagues from across Washington for our monthly WACTC presidents meeting, continuing important conversations about how we best serve students and communities across the system in very challenging times. I am still attending these on Zoom and will reevaluate that next year.
Thank you to everyone who joined my presentation on our recent delegation experience in India, organized by the Consulate General of India in Seattle. It was a meaningful opportunity to share insights on higher education, innovation, and the cultural richness we experienced during the visit. We were also fortunate to be able to host the Incredible India Photo Exhibit in conjunction with this visit, featuring the work of acclaimed Seattle-based photographer Sam Horine. The exhibit – previously inaugurated by U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, Kent Mayor Dana Ralph, Tukwila Mayor Tom McLeod, and Issaquah Mayor Mark Mullet – highlights India’s diversity, landscapes, and cultural vibrancy, and will continue traveling to universities across the Pacific Northwest.
Looking ahead, I’m excited for our Day of Learning tomorrow. It’s a great opportunity for our campus community to come together, reflect, and continue strengthening how we support student success.

Welcome Maya Hemachandra
We’re thrilled to have Maya Hemachandra on board as the Shoreline College Foundation’s Interim Executive Director. Maya brings a wealth of experience to the role, having held many leadership positions with organizations like United Way of Snohomish County, Solid Ground, Wellspring, and others. She also teaches Nonprofit Management at the University of Washington and Seattle University, and she serves on the Board of Directors for the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
While we’re sad to see Wendy Coates move on, we’re pleased that the Foundation will be in such capable hands while we conduct a full search for the next Associate Vice President of Development and Community Engagement. Shoreline College Foundation Staff Emergency Fund
The Foundation has established an Employee Emergency Assistance Grant for staff members dealing with financial hardships because of the July 2025 salary range implementation error and the subsequent required repayments.
All impacted employees are strongly encouraged to complete a brief online application to have the Foundation provide financial assistance to complete your repayment process. To apply for these one-time emergency assistance funds, please complete your application online: Shoreline Employee Assistance Grant Form.
This is a powerful example of how your donations solve big problems! You can be an important part of finding more creative solutions by filling out an Employee Giving Form and making regular gifts to support our students, our academic programs, and our campus community.

Thank you to all of the Scholarship Reader volunteers who helped out over the last few weeks with reading the 2026-2027 scholarship applications. Your support has been tremendous and enables us to award scholarships in a more equitable and timely manner. We couldn’t do it without you!
Because of your hard work, we’ve been able to move into the awarding period this week (on time!). Students are expected to be notified of their scholarship award decision by May 8.

- Who Can Nominate?
- Administrator, alumni, classified employee, faculty member, Foundation Board member, student, or trustee and faculty members can also nominate themselves.
- Nominate an individual or a group of faculty members who have shown:
- Exceptional dedication, knowledge, or achievement in their field
- Outstanding teaching, advising, counseling, or librarianship skills
- Superior service in their duties

- Individual faculty members need at least 9 quarters of full- or part-time work.
- Groups need a combined 18 quarters of full- or part-time work.

- Beginning the week of July 6, 2026, the College will move to public operating hours of Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with campus closed on Fridays.
