Bloodworks Northwest On-Campus Blood Drive Tues., Sept. 29

blood
Due to the tragic accident that happened on the Aurora Bridge last Thursday, multiple hospitals requested additional blood components from Bloodworks Northwest. Although they had an outpouring of donors at blood centers and blood drives over the weekend to donate blood, Bloodworks Northwest is still trying to replenish their blood inventory and prep for any unforeseen accidents that may happen in the future.

Please consider donating during the Shoreline Community College Blood Drive happening in the PUB Quiet Dining Room (9208) on Tues., Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed 12-1 p.m.).

To sign up for an appointment, call 1-800-398-7888 or click here.

Teaching Squares Information Sessions Oct. 5 & 6

Join us Oct. 5 & 6 from 12:00-12:50 p.m. in the Library Conference Room for information sessions on the Teaching Squares program.

This program is open to tenure and tenure-track faculty, associate faculty, instructional and non-instructional faculty who engage in teaching students in a face-to-face environment. Stipend funding is available for three Squares in fall quarter, three Squares in winter quarter and three Squares in Spring quarter.

The purpose of the Teaching Squares program is to improve teaching skills and build community through a non-threatening process of classroom observation and shared reflection. The process involves the best aspects of peer evaluation — observation and discussion — while excluding judgment and evaluation. “Squares” are usually composed of four faculty members from diverse disciplines who observe each other’s classes. Participants in a square learn about the best practices of other faculty in order to improve their own teaching.

Call for Readers for Banned Book Event in Library

banned
The annual celebration of our freedom to read is nearly upon us.  In the spirit of the season, the Shoreline Community College Library is preparing to host several events in support of the joy of the written word. You’re brave enough to flash(mob)dance, but what about doing the verbal boogie for intellectual freedom?

We’re looking for readers from our community to share a small passage from their favorite banned or challenged book. If we can get a representative group, we’re hoping to schedule an event Thurs., Oct. 1 here in the 4000 Building. Don’t worry, no reading aloud will take place in the Sanctuary, but we’re hoping to push folks out of their comfort zones just about everywhere else.

If you’re interested – or have “a friend” that might be interested – please contact Chris Matz no later than close of business Tues., Sept. 29 at cmatz@shoreline.edu or x4558. No questions asked, of course.

And somewhat more seriously, thanks for your support in turning our students and colleagues (back) on to reading.  It’s powerful stuff.
