Shoreline reaches out to staff and students at North Seattle College

In the wake of the tragic Sept. 24, 2015 bus accident in Seattle, Shoreline Community College officials have reached out their peers to offer assistance and support.

“I spoke with (North Seattle College President) Warren Brown to offer our condolences and any help that they may need,” Shoreline Community College President Cheryl Roberts said. “Warren said he was thankful as his campus struggles to deal with this terrible tragedy.”

Four people died and dozens injured in the traffic accident which involved a tour bus filled with staff and international students from North Seattle College. The four people who died in the crash were international students about to start classes at North, which opens Monday, Sept. 28. No staff or students from Shoreline were involved in the crash.

Roberts also said she spoke with call Marci Myer, Vice President of Student Services at North, and offered the assistance of Shoreline’s counseling staff. Yvonne Terrell-Powell, Associate Dean of Student Engagement and Counseling said she has spoken with staff at North and is ready to help as needed.

A number of Shoreline employees have asked what they can do in support. Bloodworks Northwest (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) issued a call for blood donations just hours after the crash. Since then, Bloodworks officials have said the response was so overwhelming that they are now asking those wishing to donate to make an appointment.

The Bloodworks mobile donation team is scheduled to be on Shoreline’s campus, Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015. The donation station is scheduled to be set up from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., in the PUB Quiet Dining Room.

Reminder: It’s Time to Party Like it’s 1965!

1965 party poster
Shoreline Community College started coming to life in 1963 when 806 student applications were accepted. In January of 1964, classes began, held in the evenings at Shoreline High School, now Shoreline Center. But it wasn’t until 1965 that Shoreline had its own campus. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Shoreline Community College campus and the beginning of instruction in college facilities. So what does that mean? Par-tay!

Join us Fri., Sept. 25 to party like it’s 1965. The festivities will kick off in the PUB Main Dining room at 6 p.m. with a series of speakers. Live music will begin at 7 and go until 10. Come enjoy fun, food and popular 60s fads on this evening of celebrating our campus and its thriving community on its 50 birthday. Free and open to the public.
