More New Refillable Water Stations Are Operational Around Campus

More refillable water stations have made their way to Shoreline’s campus. A couple of weeks ago, stations arrived in the FOSS, 1800, 3000 and 2700 buildings. Now there are two more stations up and operational – one each in the lower and middle floors of the PUB (9000 bldg). Two additional units are slated to arrive later in the summer: they will be located on the lower floor of the 2900 building and on the main floor of the Library.

These refillable water stations are FREE and designed to work with sport bottles.

Why the investment in refillable water stations, and why should you use them? According to banthebottle.net:

  • Making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. And that’s not even including the oil used for transportation.
  • The energy we waste using bottled water would be enough to power 190,000 homes.
  • Last year, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles, but only recycled 38.
  • Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. However, the U.S.’s recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means 38 billion water bottles – more than $1 billion worth of plastic – are wasted each year.
  • The recommended eight glasses of water a day, at U.S. tap rates equals about $.49 per year; that same amount of bottled water is about $1,400.
  • Antimony, which is found in PET plastic bottles, in small doses can cause dizziness and depression; in larger doses it can cause nausea, vomiting and death.

Shoreline to Host National Science Foundation’s Train the Trainer Renewable Energy Biofuels Academy, Aug. 17-21

The week of Aug. 17-21 Shoreline will play host to the National Science Foundation’s Train the Trainer Renewable Energy Biofuels Academy, which will bring instructors from around the nation, including from as far away as the Virgin Islands, to our campus to learn how to bring biofuels education back to their own classrooms. Designed for high school and two-year college science, agriculture and technical education instructors, this hands-on academy will cover the fundamentals of biofuels with an emphasis on fuel production, quality control, engine performance and vehicle emissions.

Shoreline was chosen to host this event as part of winning a National Science Foundation grant. In addition to the week’s host of educational activities, participants will also learn how to turn used cooking oil into biofuel. The resulting fuel will be donated to 21 Acres, a Woodinville-area non profit dedicated to sustainability.
