Exploring AVID to assist student success
(On Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, President Cheryl Roberts sent the following message by email to all employees.)
Dear Colleague,
At Shoreline, we have a rich tradition of caring deeply about the quality of education and service our students experience while on our campus. Whether they be transfer, professional-technical, domestic, international, degrees seeking, or looking to take a few key classes to enhance their ability to move forward in their career or educational goals, our aspiration is to help students succeed in their journey.
Thanks to all of you, we made great strides last year in laying the foundation for an intentional, coordinated approach toward student success. The creation of the Student Success Coordinating Committee is a good example of our efforts to create and coordinate a seamless experience of support for our students both inside and outside the classroom.
As part of this work, a 13-member team of faculty and administrators attended a three-day institute hosted by AVID for Higher Education (AHE). The event offered research informed workshops in high engagement teaching methodology for transfer and professional-technical faculty, first-year seminars focused on helping students transition to college, and the effective administrative support for those efforts. The team learned about high impact teaching and learning strategies that both establish and connect the academic tools that students use to engage with their course content.
Many may have heard of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). The Shoreline School district has been involved with for many years and views as the centerpiece of their student success efforts. Many other local school districts also embrace AVID. For the past several years, our campus has hosted the regional AVID college fair, drawing hundreds of students from 20 high schools across the Puget Sound area.
Several years ago, AVID established a higher education focus (AHE) that helps both two-and four-year colleges pull together all their student services and learning efforts into a coherent framework to maximize the ability of students to reach their goals.
The next step for this team is to reconvene this fall to continue exploring the benefits of using the resources and support services offered through AHE. During those intervening weeks, we will continue to gather information for our conversation this fall. Look forward to hearing more as we begin our academic year.
Thank you for your commitment to our vision of being world class in student success and community engagement.
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D
President

Student Success Coaches Off to a Successful Start at Shoreline
Newly hired student Success Coaches Nicki Sunwall and Erin Wilson both have very personal reasons for wanting students to put their best foot forward at Shoreline. Sunwall, who now helps students navigate college for a living, never intended to go to college herself. And Wilson was living out of her car when she first set foot on North Seattle’s campus as a first-generation student back in 2004.
As Shoreline grows its student services, Sunwall and Wilson want to ensure those seeking their education here experience success on our campus. And they both draw on their personal experiences as non traditional students to connect with Shoreline’s community…Read more at news.shoreline.edu
