Call for Recyclables for Earth Week

earth weekWe need your clean recyclables!

The Earth Week activity “Making recycled art” will run all week long and encourage participants to make art out of recyclables. To make this event a success, we’re asking you to help us collect enough “art supplies” by donating your clean recyclables to be turned into someone’s masterpiece. You can help all this week (and possibly into next), by bringing your clean recyclables from home or your office to the PUB 1st Floor, Room 9102. There should be a bin set up inside that room to collect the recyclables – if the bin is full, please tuck them in the back corner fairly out of the way.

We need CLEAN plastics, bottles, jars, cardboard, etc. – anything recyclable will do.

Thank you for helping make this event a success!

Internet: It’s baaccckk!

Internet service to Shoreline Community College was restored late Thursday, April 9, 2015, after an apparent construction mishap in Seattle cut what was termed “major fiber-optic trunk line.”

The outage disrupted all Internet-related services to the campus, as well as to tens of thousands of other customers in the Seattle area. The outage began around 9 a.m., Thursday, and service was restored about 12 hours later.

During the outage, personnel from Technology Support Services (TSS) worked to put a temporary website using a cloud-hosted solution that allowed visitors to see the college site and an explanation of the outage. Also, TSS and eLearning personnel worked together to create a new login procedure for the Canvas learning management system. That new procedure will now stay in place as a hedge against any future Internet outages that impact the campus.

The college emergency alert system, Rave Alert, isn’t hosted on campus and wasn’t affected by the outage. Personnel in PIO used cell phones to access the system and send messages about the outage.
