TACTC Transforming lives award

Please nominate a current or former student for the Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges (TACTC) Transforming Lives Awards.

The TACTC Transforming Lives Awards recognize current or former students whose lives have been transformed by attending a Washington State Community or Technical College (CTC).

One current or former student from each of the 34 Community and Technical Colleges will be nominated by the college’s Board of Trustees. From the nominations submitted by the campus community, the Shoreline Community College’s Board of Trustees will determine the college’s nominee and forward the individual’s name and the reasons the Board selected the individual, to the TACTC.

The TACTC will honor all 34 nominees at a Transforming Lives Awards Dinner, held in conjunction with the January 28, 2015 TACTC Legislative Contact Conference. The TACTC Awards Committee will select 5 winners from the 34 nominations. The 5 award winners will be the featured speakers at the January 28 Dinner and each of the 5 will also receive a monetary award in the amount of $500.

CRITERIA:
• The nominee may be either a current or former Washington community or technical college student who has completed or made significant progress toward completing a degree or certificate that has helped him/her prepare for or be successful in their future endeavors.

• The nominee must share a compelling story in written format (maximum 500 words) about overcoming barriers to achieve higher education goals and how the education and support received at his/her community or technical college was life transforming (e.g. new employment, self-sufficiency, etc.).

Please note: all student stories will be published in the Transforming Lives Booklet. The booklet is widely distributed to Legislators, CTC Stakeholders and the Public.

Please send all nominations to Lori Yonemitsu no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014.

Special meeting Monday for trustees

The Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet with staff members from the state Auditor’s Office in a special meeting set for 1 p.m., Monday, October 27, 2014, in the Central Conference Room of the Administration Building, (Room 1020).

An audit is a new component of the accreditation process administered by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It is anticipated that all colleges and universities seeking accreditation by the commission will need such audits and Shoreline is among the first to go through the process.

While the audit is not required by the state, Shoreline chose the Auditor’s Office to complete the work. Auditor’s Office staff members have been on campus for about a week as part of the month-long work.

Shoreline was granted initial accreditation by the commission in 1966 and has had successful compliance ever since. Shoreline’s accreditation was most recently reaffirmed on Feb. 3, 2012 in a letter from the commission following submission of the required Comprehensive Report. On Sept. 16, 2013, Shoreline submitted its Year One Self-Evaluation Report, the first step in the next seven-year accreditation cycle.

Kelemen takes on additional duties

With Holly Woodmansee taking a position at Bates Technical College, her responsibilities have been assigned to Mary Kelemen, Executive Director for Auxiliary and Logistical Support Services.

At least for now, Kelemen will oversee the areas that had been under Woodmansee’s position as Executive Director of Budget, Capital Finance and Physical Plant. Kelemen will have help on budget and finance items from Ann Martin-Cummins who will continue in her role as Budget Analyst. Director of Facilities and Capital Projects Bob Roehl will report to Kelemen. For those on campus who would normally interact with Woodmansee on college business, those contacts should now go to Kelemen.

The plan is to fill Woodmansee’s executive director-level job. The details are being worked out now with a posting expected in the coming week. Once the position is filled, it is expected that some responsibilities will be reassigned.

Woodmansee’s final day at Shoreline was today, Friday Oct. 24, 2014. She’s taking the job of Vice President for Administrative Services at Bates.
