The Servant of Two Masters, written by Carlo Goldoni in 1743, was an attempt at reviving Comedia dell’arte by scripting the dialogue and still leaving room for improvisation. The play focuses on a simple-minded character named Truffaldino, who brings trouble on himself when he attempts to care for two masters at once without either finding out.

Call for Proposals: Opening Week 2017 Concurrent Sessions

As the quarter comes to a close, we are already ramping up for an exciting new beginning in September, and planning for Opening Week is well under way!

The tradition of making Opening Week an opportunity for us to learn from each other will continue, with three concurrent session opportunities. Several sessions will be offered on developments in Communications and Marketing, including ongoing work on college identity, changes in website architecture, and new web page templates.

You are invited to submit a proposal that focuses on increasing student retention, such as employing high-engagement techniques, ensuring a sense of belonging for students, applying the concept of growth mindset to your interactions with students, or strengthening connections to students. Feel free to share recent changes you have made to your practices, including lessons learned, or your tried-and-true “go-to” methods.

You can present individually or as a group in any format (presentation, discussion, round table);  in fact, the session may be an opportunity to employ high engagement techniques! Only a limited number of sessions will be held this year, so please provide your brief description by June 30. Those individuals selected to present will be notified by August 1.

Please submit a proposal (not more than a paragraph) for your concurrent session presentation by responding to the following survey:    https://shoreline.formstack.com/forms/ow2017_proposals

The tentative schedule for concurrent sessions is:

• Monday, September 25th:  8:30am – 10:00am
• Monday, September 25th:  10:30am – 12pm
• Tuesday, September 26th:  1pm – 2:30pm

If you have questions about this opportunity, please contact Bayta Maring (bmaring@shoreline.edu, 206-546-6949).

Campus systems migrating to Windows 10 over summer

Over the past year, Technology Support Services has afforded the opportunity for faculty and staff to upgrade their systems to Windows 10. Now, during the summer quarter and through summer break, Technology Support Services will be migrating all Windows 7 and 8 systems to Windows 10. The majority of this will be completed during the evening and weekend time periods to minimize any disruption to normal operations. By start of fall quarter, all systems on campus will be Windows 10.

TSS strongly encourages everyone to upgrade their office computers at their earliest possible convenience. There is still time to complete this process on your own schedule. Before you depart for the day, open Software Center and choose the option “Windows 10 1703 upgrade” and complete the few clicks to start the process. The next morning your system will be running Windows 10. You will no longer have to worry about the assistive migration process during the summer periods. While you are at it, go ahead and upgrade to Office 2016 afterward.

Should you have any questions, comments or concerns, or simply wish a little assistance getting started, please let TSS know and we will be more than happy to assist.

The Dogs Are Coming!

College Dogs is a Seattle-based program that brings certified and registered therapy dog teams to colleges and universities during finals, midterms, and times of crisis. During the visits students (and staff) have a chance to hang out on the floor with the dogs or just pet them. In the past, we’ve had Portuguese Water Dogs, Irish Wolfhounds, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Long-Haired Jack Russell, Husky, and other breeds. For more information, visit their website: www.collegedogs.org.
