Thursday, May 18th
11:30a-12:30p: ASIAN CULTURE & STEREOTYPES AWARENESS DISCUSSION (Room 9202)
“Asians are good at math, they all know Kung Fu, and are bad drivers.” These are just a few of the many stereotypes about Asians. Join ASG President, Winston Lee, as he facilitates a discussion on Asian culture & stereotypes. This discussion will provide an opportunity for students to share their experiences, learn about Asian American history, and discover ways to get involved on and off campus.

12:30pm-2:30pm: PROMISED LAND – FILM (Room 9208)
“Promised Land” is a social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest – the Duwamish and the Chinook – as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they’ve long been denied. In following their story, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still look at tribal sovereignty. Tthe film producers will be in attendance to take questions after the showing.

7th Annual Anniversary and Retirement Celebration Luncheon: Thursday, May 25, 2017; 12:30 – 2:00 PM; Main Dining Room

Dear Colleague,

The spring term is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of students, but it is also time to honor those who give of themselves day in and day out to help them achieve those successes.

Please mark your calendar for the 7th Annual Anniversary and Retirement Celebration Luncheon on Thurs., May 25, 2017; 12:30 – 2:00 PM, in the PUB Main Dining Room. The event is an opportunity to acknowledge and honor our colleagues for their commitment to students and to the mission and vision of Shoreline Community College.

This year, there will be an amazing 80 anniversary awards presented at the luncheon, with recipients in all employee groups. The number of awards will include:

  •  5 Years – 32
  • 10 Years – 11
  • 15 Years – 18
  • 20 Years – 11
  • 25 Years – 6
  • 30 Years – 1
  • 35 Years – 1

We also look forward to honoring five members of our campus community who have recently retired or are months away from retirement.

Area High Schoolers on Campus for annual Student Bio Expo, Fri., May 19

On Fri., May 19, Shoreline Community College is hosting the 17th annual Northwest Association for Bio-medical research (NWBAR) Expo. The mission of the Student Bio Expo is to promote an understanding of bioscience research among high school students. The NWBAR encourages students to demonstrate their knowledge of the disciplines of biotechnology and biomedicine in creative ways. We are expecting 300-350 high school and middle school students from 23 regional schools to come to our campus.

Buses will start arriving with students outside the #1000 building at 7:15 a.m., and the students will be on campus until 2 p.m. The cafeteria will be open while the displays are up in the main dining room. Eating tables will be scattered throughout the building for this one-day event.

Please welcome these future scientists to our campus!

SIFF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Have fun serving popcorn and candy and get free movie tickets! Seattle International Film Festival is coming to Shoreline for the second year this May 26 through June 3!

The Foundation is handling the concessions and needs volunteers to work for two films (about 4-5 hours) on these days and then you will get two tickets to SIFF films here at Shoreline. You also need to attend a short 30-minute orientation at the theater on May 23 or May 24, time to be announced.

Concessions shifts are generally noon to 5 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. on weekends and Memorial Day and from 5 to 10 p.m. on weeknights. These may change slightly depending which day you work.

The tickets are good for any film shown on our campus on any of the nine days of screenings. (You need to work a different time than the film you want to see plays). See the schedule of films here.

Concessions include popcorn, candy, soda, and water. The separate bar includes beer and wine. You must be at least 21 years of age with an ID to serve alcohol.
