halloween
It’s that time of year! Our little goblins, princesses, super heroes, fairies, and classic characters from the Parent-Child Center will be ready to parade on Monday, October 31st between 9:30-11:00 am. In the past, various departments on campus have shared this exciting event with the children by offering treats for their goody bags. There will be approximately 68 children, ranging from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. Some of the treats have been stickers, tooth brushes, pencils, etc. If you should choose to do candy, please NO hard candies or items that contain any nuts.

Contact Jocelyn Ramos at joramos@shoreline.edu or call x4690 if you would like us to visit your department/office (keep in mind we have limited access such as stairs, elevators). Thank you!

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Please take a moment and listen to this really interesting podcast How to Become Batman from NPR’s Invisibilia about how your expectations for things impact the people around you. They interview Daniel Kish who is blind and uses echolocation to be independent in his life and explains why he shouldn’t be the only person who is blind to live this way.

If you don’t have time to listen and would like to read the transcripts, please follow the links below:

Assuming limitations of disability may often be wrong. Many people with disabilities are denied opportunities (such as employment) under the assumption that they wouldn’t be able to perform the required functions. However, as we find in this podcast, there are ways to accomplish the same goal by different means. For National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we encourage a mindset that focuses on potential, not limitations.
