The Washington ACT Transforming Lives Awards recognize current or former students whose lives have been transformed by attending a Washington State Community or Technical College (CTC).

Criteria below. Please also find the ACT criteria and nomination form here.

NOMINATIONS:
To nominate a current or former student: Please complete pages 3 and 4 on the nomination form, include the written statement from the nominee and return to Lori Yonemitsu at lyonemitsu@shoreline.edu no later than 4:30 PM on Friday, October 21, 2016.

CRITERIA:
The nominee may be either a current or former Washington CTC student who has 1) Made significant progress toward completing a degree or certificate that has helped the individual prepare for success in future endeavors or 2) Completed a degree or certificate within the past three years that has helped the individual prepare for success in future endeavors.

The nominee must share in written format** (maximum 750 words) about overcoming barriers to achieve higher education goals and how the education and support received at the individual’s CTC was life transforming. The following questions must be answered in order for the nomination to be eligible for consideration:

If applicable, what were the barriers or obstacles that originally prevented you from attending a community or technical college?

What compelled you to attend a community or technical college?

Why did you choose Shoreline Community College?

Is there/was there an individual or program at Shoreline Community College you feel made a difference in your success? If so, please explain.

What is next for you and what are your goals for your future?

If you could share one piece of advice for other students or for those who are unsure about their ability to attend a community or technical college, what would that be?

**Please note: The written submissions (and photos) of each of the thirty-four nominees will be published in a Transforming Lives Booklet. The booklet is widely distributed to Legislators, CTC Stakeholders, the Public, and is posted to the ACT’s website.

Community Read: Octavia’s Brood Kickoff event Thurs., Oct. 20

We’re continuing our Community Read this year with Octavia’s Brood! We’ll be meeting in the PUB three times a quarter to discuss/analyze/work with/enjoy the short stories in this socially conscious anthology of science fiction stories inspired by Octavia Butler.

We’re kicking off the Community Read this Thurs., Oct. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB’s fishbowl.

Having read the stories isn’t necessary to attend, but free books are available for all students who sign up for Community Reads.

Nicholas Sironka, a former Fulbright scholar, was born in Narok, in the Rift Valley province of Kenya. Sironka teaches the techniques and history of Batik art, along with an understanding of traditional Maasai culture.

Students will learn the technique of Batik and engage in creating a large Batik painting.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Statement on the Passing of Lars Gilmour, Faculty Member

Dear Colleagues,

I am saddened to share news of the death of Lars Gilmour, geology faculty in our Science Division. Lars passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 59.

We mourn the loss of a dear member of our community, a mentor, and a colleague. Lars also taught geology courses at South Seattle College and the University of Washington.

Any students needing emotional support are encouraged to reach out to our Counseling Center (206-546-4594), and employees may access support services through EAP (877- 313-4455).

Please hold Lars’s family members in your thoughts at this difficult time.
