Caution: Wasp/Hornet Nests Near Several Buildings on Campus

Hello Campus Community,

Facilities has been notified of a few areas with active wasps and hornet nests.  We have an exterminator onsite to check over the locations and address the situation accordingly.  Please be careful as you move about campus and stay clear of the following areas: walk path in between north side of 3000 leading to the south end of 2800, the SE side of 2300, and west side of 1600 in the Ivy by the parking lot.  Please contact Facilities if you come across more wasp/hornet nests on campus.

Thank you,

Kim

Campus Update 7/14/23

Good afternoon folks. I hope you have been having an enjoyable week. Mine has definitely been a busy one!

First, I wanted to let everyone know that our accreditation visit has been set. We are rescheduled for a Mid-Cycle Review Self-Evaluation Report and visit in Spring 2024. It will be conducted April 18-19, 2024. Mark your calendars- I am excited to show our progress!

The big event that occurred in the last three weeks was the amazing dedication ceremony for our Benefits Hub with United Way of King County, Seattle Mariners, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Seattle Foundation to launch the newly renovated Benefits Hub which is part of the “Bridge to Finish Program.” This revamped space will (continue to) support students who face financial, food, and clothing insecurity in a whole new way. We have the MLB All-Stars Legacy Program to thank for this generous grant and symbol of integrating our shared missions, values, and purpose. Thank you to Savena Garrett and team for applying for this opportunity, to our student Kiara Romba who gave such a great speech at the event, and to Cat Chiappa, Savena, and Kim Clark for organizing this event. We can’t wait to see all the folks who will be served by the new space.

The second half of this week will mostly be spent in Tacoma, Washington for the annual summer retreat of community & technical college chancellors & presidents. The guest speaker this year is Arthur Levine. I’ve seen Dr Levine speak before and he is a very powerful speaker. His message largely suggests that if colleges (esp. community colleges and private institutions) don’t find ways to demonstrate how they are unique; a concept tied to building one-of-a-kind programs that incorporate timely and adaptive technology, that are more rooted in competency and based less in credit/program, and that are both requested by and co-designed by the community, then those schools will struggle with relevancy in the future.

I’m looking forward to bringing those conversations back to the College. Thought a challenging topic, Dr Levine ended the presentation by stating that he thinks we (the WA State System) are incredible, and that he looks forward to what we will do next.

Well, I know some of you wanted to call me Dr. Kahn while my parents were here, but I was sneakily on campus on a Sunday instead of during the week. I did see a few people though! My parents really enjoyed their time here and I think, like a lot of people, didn’t know about all the great things that WA has to offer in addition to Seattle. They really took to downtown Edmonds actually and my dad said that a restaurant in Bothell made the best Penne Pollo he had eaten in years. And he can be “picky” 😊 So there you have it! Much more of Washington to explore of course.

Best,

Jack

Summer Quarter Updates

Accreditation and Budget

  • Area Reviews inform how the College will allocate resources for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
  • The next step in that process (see entire timeline for details) is for each budget manager to prioritize budget requests as articulated in the Area Reviews following these Guiding Principles by filling out the BEROP (Budget, Expenditure, Revenue, Operation) tool.
  • EXTENDED DUE DATE for filling out the BEROP Tool: 8 am Tuesday, July 18th
  • The next Accreditation site visit will be Thursday-Friday, April 18-19, 2024. This visit is called a “Mid-Cycle” visit as it takes place in the middle of our 7-year accreditation cycle.

Enrollments:

  • Summer enrollment is up slightly overall! International student enrollment is up 12%!
  • Daily Enrollment Reporting can be found on the PIE Team’s Sharepoint site here.  That same link also is available on the Shoreline Support Center > Employees > Daily Enrollment Report. The Daily Enrollment Report is a snapshot of current quarterly student enrollment. The top file in the folder ( 0_CURRENT_Daily Enrollment Report_Comparison_Summer 2023) is updated with the most recent numbers available; prior daily reports are archived in that folder too. Enrollment as of Friday, March 17, 2023 (the last day prior to the ransomware incident) and final numbers from last year (Spring 2022) are provided for comparison.

Worried About a Student’s Well-Being or Academic Concerns? Care Team and Shoreline Early Alert are Here to Help!

 Shoreline Early Alert

Shoreline Early Alert (SEA) is a referral program to serve all students (domestic and international) during the first three weeks of each quarter. SEA is designed to provide early academic intervention to students encountering difficulty. That is why our goal is to reach out to the students early in the quarter and connect them to the appropriate resources.

Examples of SEA referrals include:

  • No activity or little activity in Canvas
  • Difficulties with attendance, tardiness, or pacing with class
  • Low test or quiz scores
  • Excessive missing assignments
  • Lack of participation or communication

How to Make a Referral

Use the  SEA Referral Form – Formstack rather than sending individual emails. A SEA team member will respond to the referral within a business day by reaching out to both you and the student.

Care Team
At Shoreline, we care and are here to help. At any time, year-round, are you worried about a student? Did you see or hear something concerning? Would you like to share appropriate resources with a student?

The Shoreline Care Team assesses and provides support to students who may be in distress or display concerning behavior. Using the online form, you are encouraged to provide a report, even if you are unsure about your concern, want to consult with a Care Team member, or just want the information to be documented.

Please note: the Care Team does not respond directly to emergencies. In an emergency, call 911 and Campus Safety & Security (206-235-5860).

2600 Building Update- (Restriction to Access)

Dear Campus Community,

As most of you know, our campus experienced a fire in the 2600 building, the morning of May 23, 2023.  This fire unfortunately rendered the building unusable, but the silver lining is that it was a building already slated for demolition this fall in order to make way for the new STEAM building.  You can read more about the fire here.

Facilities brought PBS (contractor for environmental surveyor) onsite to conduct 4 tests: soil, air, surface, and floor.

Soil Test:

Initial testing of the soil came back with good results that did not indicate any further clean-up, which means that it won’t impede construction.

Air Quality Assessment:

Air quality was all measured in several ways and all of the results were below applicable occupational exposure limits.

Surface Test:

PBS measured surface pH levels on representative materials salvaged from the fire in 2600. All sample locations tested between 5.0 – 7.0 on the pH indicator chart. This is an indication that no significant corrosive particulate residues had accumulated on the materials.

Floor Test:

PBS collected surface dust samples at representative locations throughout the interior of the 2600 building. Laboratory analysis identified low levels of asbestos on five (5) of the six (6) samples collected. Although there are no regulatory thresholds for the amount of asbestos in surface dust, researchers believe concentrations below 1,000 structures/cm2 (s/cm2) are unlikely to result in elevated exposures. Further testing is being conducted.

Out of an abundance of caution, Building 2600 is being permanently shut down with no access to anything in the building going forward. No employees, students, or visitors are allowed inside.

We’ve confirmed that the equipment that was removed previously has been surface tested with clear results and has all been cleaned.

Thank you for your patience in this matter.  If you have any further questions, please contact:
