System Outage Update 7/7/23

Happy Friday! 

I just want to say thank you again for the amazing turnout at the MLB event this morning.  It was great to see so many Shoreline folks showing your support! 

Ok, I promise this is the lastl I will be sending you today. I know you’re heartbroken, but don’t worry I’ll have more e-mails for you next week I’m sure. 😉 

Today I have some updates to share from TSS about the restoration process as well as important information regarding the Seattle City Light power outage on Monday night. 

Seattle City Light Power Outage 

Due to the announced power outage being performed by Seattle City Light, TSS will need to prepare the campus network equipment for this event.  We will be bringing the campus network (including Wi-Fi) offline on Monday (7/10) evening beginning at 6:00pm and restoring network connectivity the next morning (7/11) at 6:30am.  We are asking all users to please save all your documents and perform a “shutdown” of your PC before leaving the office on Monday evening.  We thank you for your cooperation and understanding. 

Restoration Updates 

  • Check printing is now fully tested and restored at Shoreline! 
  • We have reached the point in the restoration process to start recreating servers. We now have servers that are active on the Shoreline network. To be clear, the servers are active, but TSS is still testing to ensure reliability and stability, however this is a major milestone in the process to total restoration. 
  • We are soon approaching the phase of the restoration process to start reconnecting PCs to the wired network within the next 2-3 weeks. At that time, TSS will use the requirements spreadsheets provided by each department and will meet with key individuals to reconnect desktops as each area’s wired network comes back online.  
  • The TSS department is now live on the Teams Phone app. We are thoroughly testing this in various scenarios in preparation to rollout campus wide.  Once we have completed this process, we will begin rollout by area. There are some considerations that everyone should know about once this is implemented.  When each area comes online with the Teams phone system, abbreviated extension dialing will be disabled. This will mean if you are calling from another method other than Teams, you will need to dial the complete 10-digit number instead of the 4-digit extension.  As we bring areas online, numbers will be updated and communicated to the rest of campus.

Important: HSAMCC Building Update

Dear Campus Community, 

Due to delays beyond the control of the College or our Contractors, we have just received word that the new HSAMCC building will now be opening in mid-Fall as opposed to the beginning of the Fall Quarter as was originally planned. 

Seattle City Light will be on campus Monday night, July 10, 2023, to connect and power up the transformer to bring power to the new building.  As we stated in an e-mail we sent earlier this week, the shutdown will occur from 10pm on the 10th until 4am on the 11th.  The following buildings have a generator; 1000, 4000, 2900 (north end), and 7000 (limited to hallways and open areas).  Maintenance will be onsite during this time to assist Seattle City Light.  

The Project Team (Facilities and the Deans) are working with Faculty to develop a plan for instruction   for the impacted programs. More information to follow soon. 

By mid-September, the Project Team will start moving people and equipment into the new HSAMCC building.  Further information to follow.

Events and News 

Good afternoon folks! I hope everyone had a great July 4th. I don’t have much to report this week, as the end of last week was spent in hiring conversations, and I was out yesterday. I spent Monday through Wednesday showing my folks around the area a bit and visited several neighboring towns. I will have several items to report next week including an update on our naming project, MLB event summary (which is this morning at 10am!), and updates from the WACTC president’s meeting in Tacoma. Accreditation and Budget 

  • Area Reviews inform how the College will allocate resources for the 2023-24 fiscal year.  
  • The next step in that process (see entire timeline for details) is for each budget manager to prioritize budget requests as articulated in the Area Reviews following these Guiding Principles by filling out the BEROP (Budget, Expenditure, Revenue, Operation) tool.

Seattle City Light Campus Shutdown for HSAMCC Monday 7/10

Hello Campus Community,

Seattle City Light will be shutting down power to the campus on 7/10 to run power to HSAMCC.  The shutdown will occur from 10pm to 4am.  The following buildings have a generator; 1000, 4000, 2900 (north end), and 7000 (limited to hallways and open areas).  Maintenance will be onsite during this time to assist Seattle City Light.
