Congrats to our NCORE Delegation!

Good afternoon, Shoreline Community,

I hope you’re doing well and taking the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful weather. The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) is EXCITED to announce that all employees requesting funding to attend NCORE by the deadline have been approved. We want to acknowledge many others who were interested, but missed the deadline. We wish we had more funding to support everyone wanting to attend and our goal is to send a much larger team next year when the conference is on the Westcoast. Below is the delegation representing the college:

  • Rachel David
  • Gwendollyn Noble-Wold
  • Rashawn Smith
  • DuValle Daniel
  • Henry Garcia
  • Janel Middleton

We understand there are other Shoreline employees attending as speakers, such as, Dr. Joan King. We appreciate this team for representing our college, by gathering resources, promising practices and being in community with all of the other practitioners committed to DEIA across the nation. Our delegation will engage in a debrief at the start of the Fall quarter and the DEIA Office will coordinate a college presentation, so we can all benefit from the experience.

Thanks to our delegation for representing our community and we are eager to learn all about the conference experience.

Enjoy your weekend!

Melanie Dixon

System Outage Update 4/28/23

Happy Friday!

I hope you have been able to take a little time out of your day today to enjoy the sunshine. It is certainly beautiful around campus. If you haven’t stepped outside today, take a look at the latest post on Shoreline’s Instagram page to see the campus in full bloom.

Today I have a couple of updates for you from Technology Support Services (TSS) and on accreditation.

First, I want to thank you all for your patience and flexibility during this time. We are making great progress getting things back online, but we know that everyone has had to work very hard to make adjustments to instruction, and operations.  We truly appreciate your efforts.

TSS

As TSS continues to forge ahead with restoration efforts they would like to remind you to continue to fill out the file recovery request form which can be found here. They are in the final testing stage and hope to begin working with individual computers as early as the end of next week. Please remember this request form is not to ask for files on the network drives (e.g. S, X etc.) but instead for things you might have saved on your individual computer.

Accreditation

Due to the effect of the ransomware incident on accreditation work, the following deadlines have been extended and timelines adjusted:

  • All Area Reviews are now due Friday, June 16, 2023 – the last day of spring quarter. The April 24th deadline for Area Reviews was extended.
  • Next year’s (2023-24) budget now will be developed two months later, as approved by the Board of Trustees at their April 26, 2023 meeting. A draft budget will be reviewed by the Board in August; it will be shared with the Strategic Planning & Budget Council during Opening Week, when faculty are back on contract. A final budget will be presented to the Board for approval in September.
  • Since Area Reviews will inform resource allocation (budget development), that timeline has been updated.
  • The Fall 2023 (October 5-6) Accreditation Mid-Cycle visit has been approved by the Northwest Commission on Colleges & Universities (NWCCU) to be delayed to spring 2024.

Enjoy your weekend!

Celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Month in May- Check out this wonderful learning opportunity!

Please join us to learn more about the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) student experience.

Presentation: Supporting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Students With a Culturally Competent Lens

Presenter: Dr. Joan King

Date/Time: Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 10:00am-11:30am Location: Classroom 2206

Description:Overview of Asian American biases within society, professional environments, education, and even within DEI work. It will draw attention to the deficiencies in which we discuss racial equity regarding Asian American advocacy and disrupt white-centered expectations of Asian Americans. As DEI work is inherently polarized (Black or White), this training will educate the audience with the harm in continuing DEI work that continues to ignore Asian American experiences with discrimination and racism in America.

The specific topics covered will be as follows (but not limited to):

  • Double Eyelid Bias
  • Lack of educational support and differentiation for Asian American students due to the Model Minority Myth
  • The lack of socioemotional support for Asian American students when anxiety and intergenerational trauma due to possible immigrant trauma is high
  • The onus of communication (as discussed by Malcolm Gladwell) within Asian American communities, the impossibility of Asian American stereotypes given their conflicting natures

Verizon Tower Update

Dear Campus Community,

Beginning Wednesday, May 3rd, there will be work on the Verizon tower located west of Bldg. 1600. For the first portion of the work, it will be contained within the tower fencing area with little to no impact to campus. Beginning Monday May 15th through Friday May 19th, the area on the map highlighted in red will be coned off as various lifts and a crane are brought in for the last leg of the work.

The loudest impact to campus will be the diesel engines of the crane and rigs that are used to work at height on the tower. The vast majority of work being conducted will be with hand tools so there should be minimal audible disruptions.

This is an image that show the impacted area between 1500 and 1600
