New reporting methods for student concerns

The College is pleased to announce a new way of reporting student concerns:

Please use the Care / Incident Report form to report concerns about a student or concerning student behavior.

Once a report is submitted, the information will automatically be shared with the Shoreline Care Team and you may be contacted for further information. The Shoreline Care Team identifies, assesses, and monitors concerns about student behavior and welfare and coordinates response using a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.

Care Team

Campuses across the nation are taking a proactive response involving college-wide prevention/intervention programming, protocol, and guidance implementation. These are key components of an effective and coordinated community response to help students access appropriate resources and address situations of concern which may lead to disruptive, disturbing, and even dangerous behavior. Ultimately, the Care Team’s goal is to support students, support employees who interact with students, and provide support for success.

Shoreline Community College’s Care Team (formerly Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)) serves as a clearinghouse for reports of concerning student behavior and students of concern (e.g., in crisis, welfare concern, etc.).  The Care Team is comprised of a multidisciplinary team from across the campus community whose central purpose is to rapidly identify, examine, and respond to students or situations of concern and determine appropriate intervention strategies to support a student of concern and/or address behavior(s) of concern.

In order for our College’s Care Team to function effectively, campus-wide awareness and reporting of situations/behaviors of concern are essential. When a report is generated, the Care Team gathers information, assesses concern, and determines the best mechanisms for reasonable support, intervention, and response. The Care Team organizes a coordinated response through the sharing of resources, guidance, consultation, and follow-up, where appropriate. The focus of the Care Team is to coordinate more support, resources, and advocacy for our students and to help support our faculty and staff.

To assist and guide employees in their reporting efforts, below is general guidance to help manage behaviors and concerns as well as refer and report incidences as they occur:

Manage

If a student is exhibiting behavior that is concerning or disruptive to the teaching and learning environment or administrative functions, privately share appropriate resources and/or set a boundary for the student. Discreetly check in with the student in the moment, sharing resources addressing concern and/or strategies to help themselves regulate their behavior, such as stepping out of the classroom or office for a moment. Briefly and objectively document what occurred and the remedies used to address the concern or behavior. We encourage employees to follow up with the student via email, to document concerns or behaviors addressed, share resources and strategies for success, and set clear expectations moving forward. We also encourage submitting a Care / Incident Report and you have the option to do so as an “information only” report.

If a student is unable to comply with expectations in a classroom, learning space, office or department and the concerning or disruptive behavior persists, privately explain to the student the behaviors that need to be discussed and debriefed so that you can reset the expectation and boundary, share resources and supports, and at the same time, allow for the student to articulate what information and support they may need to be successful. Document the incident with the student and submit a Care / Incident Report.

If a student violates boundaries and the disruptive behavior persists to where safety may be compromised for you and others in your environment, work to dismiss the student from the environment and dial Campus Safety & Security 24/7 at 206-235-5860 or use LYNX Emergency Alert and/or 911 (if 911 is called, please alert Safety & Security).

If you are unable to successfully redirect the student from your environment, remove yourself and others from the environment and dial Campus Safety & Security 24/7 at 206-235-5860 or use LYNX Emergency Alert and/or 911 (if 911 is called, please alert Safety & Security). Submit a Care / Incident Report.

We encourage anyone to connect with Campus Safety & Security, should they have additional concerns about personal safety.

Refer

It’s important that in addition to managing and reporting situations of concern, that students get the right referrals and are connected to the appropriate resources. Your preliminary knowledge about each of these services is critical in helping student connect to appropriate resources:
