Susan Hoyne retiring; Guy Hamilton to be Acting Dean of Science

Susan Hoyne is retiring from Shoreline Community College.

Hoyne, who is the Dean of Science, Mathematics, Manufacturing, Engineering, Computer Science and Energy, announced her decision in an email to division faculty and staff on Friday, June 5, 2015.

“I thank you all for the extraordinary work you have done,” Hoyne wrote. “I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Dean of this Division for the past 12 years.”

Taking over as Acting Dean on June 15 will be Guy Hamilton, program chair of the Biology/Biotechnology department.

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” Hamilton said. “My role with the Strategic Planning and Budget Committee has offered some insight and I like where the college is headed. I’m looking forward to helping the college and our students be successful.”

Hoyne’s final day on campus will be no later than Friday, June 12. Hamilton will assume his new duties on Monday, June 15.

“I’ve always admired Guy’s intellect and dedication as a faculty member,” Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Bob Francis said. “I’m looking forward to working with Guy in the dean’s role.”

Hamilton will serve through the 2015-16 academic year, during which the college will conduct an open recruitment on the regular academic cycle, according to Vice President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs Stephen P. Smith.

Reminder! Retirement & Anniversary Awards Luncheon, Fri., June 5

une is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of students, but it is also time to honor those who give of themselves day in and day out to help them achieve those successes.

The 2015 Retirement & Anniversary Awards celebration is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, June 5, in the PUB Main Dining Room. The annual event is an opportunity to acknowledge and honor co-workers for their commitment to students and the mission and vision of Shoreline Community College.

To recognize the contributions of all employees in a more inclusive way, some adjustments are being made to the categories of employees who are eligible for awards and the methods of calculating length of service.

“We really just wanted to acknowledge that every employee makes a contribution to this college and can have a positive impact on students,” President Cheryl Roberts said. To that end, part-time faculty and staff members as well as hourly employees will be recognized for their service. Also, length of service will now be calculated based on the number of years since employees first began working at the college, regardless of whether the person is working full- or part-time.

According to Director of Personnel Veronica Zura, the impact of the adjustments – beyond including and acknowledging the contribution of more people – will be minimal. The anniversary awards are provided in five-year increments, and this year will include a 45-year anniversary award for the first time ever.

This year, there will be an amazing 95 Anniversary Awards passed out at the luncheon, with recipients in all employee groups. The number of awards will include:

5 Years – 30
10 Years – 22
15 Years – 23
20 Years – 9
25 Years – 5
30 Years – 3
35 Years – 2
40 Years – 0
45 Years – 1

There are also 11 people who have or will retire this year. We hope to see you there to honor our hard-working colleagues.
