Accessibility Week events plus the Accessibility Tip for Wed., April 27

This week we are celebrating Online Accessibility Action Week at Shoreline. The Faculty Learning Community on Accessible Online Course Content – has put together daily tips for you!

Today’s tip is: Creating Accessible Word Documents
According to the Office of Special Services here at SCC, one of the greatest needs for students with disabilities is that instructional documents be free from accessibility barriers. This would include syllabi as well as other course materials. Happily, Microsoft Word has the ability to quickly check documents for issues that people with disabilities might experience. Portland Community College has pulled together a nice resource that includes checking for accessibility issues in both MS Word and PowerPoint files.

Quickly learn the 5 steps that make documents accessible!  We’ll be at computers so please bring a syllabus or other document that you’d like to improve.

UDOIT Party
Thursday, April 28, 1:30-3:00pm Room 4214
What does UDOIT mean?! It is finally easy for anyone to check their Canvas classroom for accessibility. UDOIT is a great new tool that is inside Canvas – a few clicks and it has checked your full course for Accessibility.  It also provides information on how to fix the issues!  Our FLC has also put together a handy checklist if you want to check your course that way.  FLC Members will be present to show you how to use the tools and to help you quickly make improvements.

It feels like a new buzz phrase – digital accessibility.  Those steeped in it, throw the term around daily.  Most others don’t find the term very accessible (aka approachable).  More individuals are starting to understand a little about how to create accessible Word documents and that web images require alt tags.  We have added more steps to our work processes. Why?

Let’s take a step back and get a general view of what’s happening with higher education and digital accessibility.  Is it truly an issue that needs our attention, how involved are each of us and what is higher education’s return on investment as far as digital accessibility.

This presentation is part of the T&L Conference but you are welcome to attend this session even if not registered for the full conference.  Please RSVP here so we have enough seats set up for you.

Our very own DeLaine Tyner of the Workforce division will be featured on the Tues., May 3 episode of Wheel of Fortune. Set your DVRs or watch live!

DeLaine, a Wheelie, has been our campus since September and gives great exposure for Shoreline as she proudly introduces herself during Seattle Week as the “administrative assistant to the workforce dean of Shoreline Community College.”

Transit alert! Approximate two-week closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct starts April 29

Beginning Friday, April 29, the SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closed for approximately two weeks as a precautionary measure while Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine, travels beneath the structure. The viaduct will be closed between the south end of the Battery Street Tunnel and the West Seattle Bridge. For the most up-to-date information, visit 99closure.org.

Make a travel plan and expect additional congestion throughout the region

This closure will disrupt local and regional traffic patterns. WSDOT is coordinating with other transportation agencies to keep people moving through a variety of measures, but is expecting the closure to increase traffic congestion regardless. We are asking travelers in Seattle and the surrounding region to plan ahead and consider adjusting their travel habits to help us keep people moving on highways and city streets. We recommend that you:

  • Allow plenty of extra travel time and expect rush hour congestion to start earlier and end later.
  • If possible, consider leaving early or delaying your trip to avoid traveling during peak times. Know before you go and check out the travel resources page so you can make informed travel choices during the closure.
  • Consider working from home if you can, to avoid commuting altogether.

Head Baseball Coach Dave Snell’s son makes it to the majors!

While Shoreline’s baseball team’s Head Coach, Dave Snell, was traveling with the Phins this past weekend for a tournament in Canada, his son Blake was pitching against the Yankees in his majors debut.

Blake, who graduated Shorewood High School in 2012, plays for the Tampa Bay Rays’ Triple-A team. He was called up to play in the majors on Saturday for one start to fill a hole in the Rays’ pitching rotation. Touted as one of the league’s top pitching prospects, Snell permitted only one run and two hits while striking out six and walking one.

Congrats to the Snell family!

You can read more about Blake’s debut in this article from The Herald, which also mentions the college. Blake’s story was all over the MLB network this weekend, and the City of Shoreline, Shorewood High School, and Shoreline Community College were all mentioned throughout the MLB’s reporting.
