Mark your calendars! The Mystery of Edwin Drood opens May 13

edwin drood
Shoreline Community College presents this interactive whodunit mystery musical in Steampunk style.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a hilarious, interactive whodunit mystery musical that allows the audience to enter the action and become the ultimate detectives. The show is based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name. In small town of Chesterham, England, the young and charming Edwin Drood has been mysteriously murdered. But by whom? His leering romantic rival, John Jasper? The infamous purveyor of opium and vice, Princess Puffer? The mysterious Landless twins, newly arrived from Ceylon? Or someone else even more dastardly and villainous? Dickens passed away before he was able to reveal the culprit. Rupert Holmes’ award-winning musical solves this predicament by asking the audience to choose which character is the killer by putting it to a vote. Staged in metatheatrical manner by the Shoreline Community College Musical theater department, we have crafted a cast full of colorful characters while reflecting the modern world we live in today—Steampunk elements and gender bent roles. This charming and inventive musical is sure to intrigue and entertain any musical or mystery lover.

All actors play two parts. Each plays an actor of the Music Hall Royale and also the character he or she plays in their production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Be a Biking Dolphin during May’s Bike Everywhere Challenge

bike to work
The “Biking Dolphins” are back for the “Bike Everywhere Challenge” again this year. There are two teams: the Biking Dolphins Green and the Squealing Dolphins. Both are open to anyone in the Shoreline Community College community.

Here at Shoreline we have organized two teams for Bike Everywhere Month and hope to start a student club to encourage participation. It’s really easy: just sign up on the website and then log in to record the miles that you ride each day during May. Our faculty and staff who have participated in the past have enjoyed it very much; now we are trying to encourage more student participation as well.

For more information or to express your interest, please contact either Jonathan Betz-Zall  at jbetz-zall@shoreline.edu or Alan Loveless  at wloveless@shoreline.edu. You can also sign up directly on the website, but each team is nearly full so we will encourage people to start their own teams.

UDOIT Tool available in Canvas beginning Thurs., April 28

accessibility
As part of Accessibility Action week, we are thrilled to announce that we are one of the first SBCTC colleges to be able to put the UDOIT tool into our Canvas instance!

What is UDOIT? UDOIT is a tool that can quickly check your full course for Accessibility.  It also provides information on how to fix any issues that make viewing/using your content difficult or impossible for someone using a screen reader or other assistive device.  For example, it will show you how to add styles to your text and alternative text on your images and tables.

As of this Thursday, April 28, you will see it in the left hand navigation in your Canvas classes.  It’s a “teacher only” tool so students will not be able to see it.

If you would like to learn more, please join us Thurs., April 28 for a UDOIT Party in Room 4214 from 1:30-3 p.m.! We will show you how to use the UDOIT tool and then let you try it on your own courses. In addition, the Accessibility FLC has put together a handy checklist if you want to check your course that way. FLC Members will be present to help you quickly make improvements.

If you have any questions, please ask!
