Margin To Center programming begins Tues., April 11 with the film “Do Not Resist”

Join Student Life as they kick off their “From Margin to Center” program series with a film screening of “Do Not Resist,” facilitated by Dr. Eric Hamako. We will be screening the film in the PUB 9208 from 12:30-2 p.m. on Tues., April 11.

Join Dr. Hamako as he facilitates a screening of “Do Not Resist,” a film that offers a stunning look at the current state of policing in America and a glimpse into the future. This film is an urgent and powerful exploration of the rapid militarization of the police in the United States.

Dr. Eric Hamako has been teaching at Shoreline’s Multicultural Studies Program in Equity & Social Justice in 2014. He completed his doctorate in Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and worked as the Program Coordinator for Institutional Diversity & Equity at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Dr. Hamako particularly enjoys bringing a multi-issue social justice analysis to pop culture like Harry Potter, zombies, and criminal procedural TV shows.

Join us for the Spring 2017 Campus Update #1: Why do we value Free Speech? Fri., April 14

Join us on Friday, April 14 in the PUB’s Main Dining Room (#9215) from 1:30-3:30 p.m. for a conversation (entitled Why do we value Free Speech?) with the ACLU of Washington’s Deputy Director Michele Storms related to the issue of First Amendment rights on college campuses.

Join this interactive conversation about how we express our ideas in a diverse society and what it means to disagree and live in community. Some questions we will consider are:

  • What does it mean to speak out when our ideas and expressions clash?
  • How do we function as a society when we don’t agree?

Come explore ways to address the challenges of living together in the face of differences in expression and ideas.

Information on the Spring 2017 Campus Update #1 was first announced on the April 3, 2017 Spring Message from President Roberts.

S^3 Shoreline Students Speak *Earth APpreciation*, Mon., April 10

We invite you to join us for our April event this Mon., April 10 in the PUB 9208 from 1-3 p.m. The theme for April is *Earth Appreciation*!

This month’s featured faculty speaker is Chip Dodd. The event will feature several student speeches on environmental topics as well as a presentation by officers of the Shoreline Environmental Club.

S^3 Shoreline Students Speak is a series of community-oriented and student-led awareness events. Each month will coincide with a theme that will help set the tone for a central discussion. The goal is to have many volunteers speak and express their thoughts so that we can all gain new perspectives and learn from each other through the use of all forms of communication. The structure is similar to an open mic and incorporates a call to action by encouraging community involvement related to the monthly theme. Get curious; connect with your community by sharing your experience and become involved!

Our upcoming event topics include Mental Health Awareness in May and Mentor Appreciation in June. If you have a special interest in these topic(s) and would like to submit a presentation proposal OR if you run or are a member of a club that might want to co-sponsor one of these events, contact the Public Speaking Leadership Club at http://facebook.com/shorelineccpslc.

DAIPANbutoh Collective is pleased to announce the Seattle International Butoh Festival 2017, a year of an international artist exchange with DAIPAN and Compañía Ruta de la Memoria (Chile) plus a special evening focusing on local and visiting Japanese artists.

DAIPAN continues to be the only group consistently bringing national and international butoh artists to Seattle, and producing an annual festival that features both guest artists and local performers. From its birth in Japan nearly 60 years ago, Butoh has proven itself a vital and innovative global genre. Join us in discovering these unique tricontinental voices in our 2017 festival, which opens the gate to the Hidden Histories of the Body.

About DAIPAN and our festival

In 2017, DAIPAN is planning its most ambitious festival bringing international dance artist Natalia Cuellar from Chile with her group Compañía Ruta de la Memoria to perform and present workshops. In exchange, Natalia has invited the DAIPAN Collective to perform a group work in Santiago in the FiButoh Festival Internacional de Butoh and to teach workshops. In addition, DAIPAN will tour individual solos in other Chilean cities. DAIPAN will also present Ken Mai, a Japanese butoh artist residing in Helsinki, Finland, to perform and conduct a workshop for the 2017 festival. April 7 & 8 will feature Compañía Ruta de la Memoria and works by DAIPAN, and April 9 will feature Ken Mai and DAIPAN’s own Kaoru Okumura.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to bring never seen before international artists to the northwest community, and the opportunity for DAIPAN members to travel on tour together for the first time. The 2017 festival, running March 31 through April 9, is partnering with Shoreline Community College Theater and Gallery. SCC will host the 2017 festival performances in the theater at the college, and present a showcase of butoh photos featuring well known photographer Bruce Clayton Tom and other photographers with performances by DAIPAN and friends in the college gallery. Themes for our festival are the body as politics, hidden histories revealed, and personal primordial journeys and journeys of acceptance.
