eLearning Updates and Professional Learning

New Canvas Classrooms for Students
This summer, we built two new Canvas classrooms to help online and hybrid students succeed here at Shoreline.

Welcome to the Virtual Campus – Each quarter, we add all online and hybrid students to this classroom.  In it, they students have quick access to our new Online Student Coach, Erin Wilson. They can also link to a FREE survey tool that assesses their readiness for online education; it’s called Smarter Measure. Erin is notified whenever a student takes the survey so she can follow up with them and direct them to resources that will boost any areas that need it. Erin has also built a module to include online students in campus life with photo contests, Shoreline Today feeds and more. In other modules, students can quickly find Canvas and eLearning resources as well as quick links to registration and advising information furnished by our eLearning Advisor, Jordan Lee.

How to be a Successful Online Student This Canvas class is open to the public and is ideal for any student considering taking their first online course.  It also contains a link to Smarter Measure (the survey tool to assess readiness for online education).  Once a student completes the Smarter Measure assessment, they are provided with a report that breaks down their skills into 7 areas.  If an area needs improvement, the Canvas classroom has resources to help them boost those skills. Erin Wilson, our Student Success Coach is also notified when anyone takes the survey so she can follow up with them.

If you are interested in having your students take the Smarter Measure readiness survey, please let us know and we can put a link to it into your Canvas classroom.

The Office of Institutional Assessment and Data Management (IADM) will be sponsoring 3-5 faculty-led projects during the 2015-16 academic year. The projects will focus on “closing the loop” (see image above) with assessment; teams of faculty will “review, assess, reflect and act” based on student learning outcomes for one course or series of courses.

Each project will be led by one faculty member, with the expectation that at least one additional faculty member (full- or part-time) will participate in the project. The project lead will receive a $1,000 stipend, with an additional $1,000 available to support participation of additional team members.

Tips for Using Windows 10 on the Smart Classroom Computers

windows10TSS replaced 60 smart classroom computers over the summer and upgraded all smart classroom computers to Windows 10.  Windows 8 was such a radical overhaul of Microsoft’s desktop operating system that may people avoided the upgrade. Windows 10 looks and functions much more like the Windows 7 that most people are familiar with, but there are a few differences. Most notably, Microsoft now requires that accounts have passwords. The guest account username and password for the smart classrooms is on a sticker on the keyboard and/or monitor. Otherwise you can login with your credentials as before. TSS staff will be out and about tomorrow morning (Wed., Sept. 23) to provide assistance with the smart classroom equipment. The TSS help desk can be reached at x5872 or tss@shoreline.eduBelow are a few tips you may find useful:

To login to Windows enter your credentials at the login screen.  If someone else is already logged in but the screen is locked select “other user” at the lower left hand side of the screen to enter your credentials.

To logout click on your username at the top of the start menu.  You can also choose to login as a different user from there if desired.

To shut down or reboot the computer click the power icon at the bottom of the start menu.

Here are some useful short cuts.  These involve key combinations (+) that include the “Windows” key which is the key on the lower left side of the keyboard with the windows symbol on it.

Windows logo key + D = Display the desktop/return to previous view toggle.

Windows logo key + X = Open the Quick Link menu (same as right click on start menu icon).

Windows logo key + E = open file explorer.

Windows logo key + L = Lock your PC or switch accounts.
