Parking Permit Machines Out of Service Sept. 3-7

parking meterThe 6 parking permit machines on campus will be out of service from Sept 3, 2015 to Sept. 7, 2015. During this time, the permit stations will be reprogrammed to offer free parking after 4:00pm, as well as new options for purchasing a daily permit.

During the service period, parking permits will not be necessary to park on campus. Please continue, however, to park in appropriate parking locations. Beginning Tues, Sept. 8, 2015, the machines will be back in service. We are looking forward to offering these new parking options as we begin fall quarter.

If you have any questions regarding the process, please contact Sergeant Edwin Lucero or Director Robin Blacksmith at ext. 4633. Thank you.

Annual Campus-Wide Alarm Testing, Aug. 31 – Sept. 4

Required annual fire safety alarm testing will begin August 31 and will run through September 4. During the week, you may see Simplex Grinnell technicians in your building or hear an occasional alarm sound. The alarms are being monitored and should quickly cease. We test this time of year to bring the least amount of disruption possible. We are required by law to test all fire alarm systems on an annual basis and we apologize in advance for any disruption.

If you have questions about this safety practice, please contact Security at 206-546-4633.

Parking Lot Striping Project Begins Tues., August 25

parkingJust a heads up that, beginning Tues., August 24, we’ll be working on updating the striping in the parking lots campus-wide. This will be an ongoing project that we hope to have finished by Sept. 6 at the latest. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this project, and will try to keep the inconvenience to a minimum. However, as most lots will be affected at one time or another, on certain days it may be necessary to park in a lot that’s not your usual lot. Please pay attention to any posted signage and park accordingly. Thank you.

Please contact Safety and Security with any questions at (206) 546-4633 with any questions.

New Campus Parking Initiative Makes Parking Free After 4 p.m. and On Weekends

Starting Sept. 8, 2015, visitors to our campus will no longer have to pay parking fees after 4 p.m. or on weekends. In the coming weeks, new signage will go up around the campus lots announcing the changes to free parking hours.

The move is part of an effort to improve and increase access to our campus, and to create a friendlier environment and experience to our neighbors and community.

“During the day when most classes are in session, parking is at premium. We relieve the pressure put on our parking resources by offering shuttle services and following a pay-to-park structure,” said President Cheryl Roberts. “But in off-peak hours, we’re pleased to offer free parking to our community members so that they may visit us with ease.”

Currently, visitors to campus pay a fee to park until midnight and on weekends.

Another positive change to the parking permit system is that the pay machines will now allow visitors to purchase permits in incremental amounts of time in between the posted rates. For example, if a visitor only wants to buy 15 or 30 minutes of additional time without going up to the next hourly rate, they’re allowed to do so.

Robin Blacksmith, Director of Campus Safety and Security, said this allowance for incremental purchasing “will be a positive change and represent a fairer way for a visitor to purchase and pay for the exact amount of time they need.”

Blacksmith also reported that security will still continue to patrol the campus and parking lots during the periods of free parking to ensure the safety of visitors to the college.

When the change goes into effect on Sept. 8, the machines will operate from 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. and will not accept payment during the off hours.

Current parking rates are $3 for 2 hours, $5 for 4 hours and $7.50 for all day parking.

‘Get Ready- Take Action’ spring schedule set

The spring-quarter schedule of “Get Ready – Take Action, All-Hazards Training” is set.

The big news is that faculty and staff will be able to take the training online in addition to choosing from three afternoon face-to-face sessions.

“I’m very excited about the online training,” said Safety & Security Director Robin Blacksmith. “I’m working with our eLearning department to create a class in Canvas that will then be available for all employees to take when it is convenient for them.”

The work to build the class has started and Blacksmith said the goal is to have it available by mid-spring quarter. “A number of people who have already taken the class have asked if they can take it again as a refresher,” she said. “The answer is ‘yes,’ and the online option may help address that request.”

Some people prefer to be in a traditional face-to-face learning environment and there are three such classes set for this spring. In previous quarters, most of the 90-minute classes were scheduled between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. For spring, Blacksmith consulted with faculty union President Amy Kinsel to set the three sessions. “We wanted to perhaps reach a group of employees who haven’t been able to get to the other classes,” Blacksmith said.

The dates, times and locations are:

  • May 7, 3-4:30 p.m., Room 9208
  • May 20, 3-4:30 p.m., Room 2925
  • May 26, 3-4:30 p.m., Room 9208

Blacksmith also noted that there are two session remaining this month:

  • March 11, 2-3:30 p.m., Room 2925
  • March 17, Noon-1:30 p.m., Room 9208

For employees who want to come to a face-to-face class, Blacksmith asks that they use the form below to sign up. Once the online class is available, employees will be able to access it at any time with no signup required. As reminder, associate faculty members who are attending either the face-to-face or the online training and submit a completed time-sheet to the VPASA’s office will be paid for that time at the contractual rate for non-instructional work, $39 per hour. Associate faculty payment applies only to those who are taking the training for the first time.

The goal is to have all employees who work on campus to participate, including staff and full- and part-time faculty. The college began in June, 2014, to offer Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) –based training to all employees.

President Cheryl Roberts has expressed that all employees who work on campus should complete what is now labeled, “Get Ready – Take Action, All Hazards Training.”

This training is intended to help make the campus a safer environment for employees, students and everyone who comes to the college. Employees who do not work on campus may also choose to participate in the trainings, either in class or online.
