College officials get FEMA training

Interim President Daryl Campbell is leading a group of college officials at a three-day training session sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Joining Campbell are vice presidents James Jansen and Stephen Smith along with Jim Hills and Amy Stapleton from the Public Information Office.

The July 9-11 training, hosted at North Seattle Community College, is titled “Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning for Higher Education.” Safety and Security Director Robin Blacksmith and Asst. Director Edwin Lucero have previously taken the training that focuses on the appropriate organization and command structures and procedures in the event of an emergency.

“We’re taking this very seriously,” Campbell said. “This will provide the foundation for more emergency planning and training on campus. Hopefully, we won’t ever have to use this training, but we need to be ready.”

Campbell and the other attendees will be back on campus Friday, July 12.

International Express Pulls into the PUB

As we were invited, the International Education office provided one of the two scheduled Classified Voluntary Trainings on Saturday, June 22 (9 – 12:30).  The session was called “International Express” in the sense of an express train — representing a quick overview of IE, China and Intercultural Training.  Additionally, the ‘express’ represents the fast-growing field of international education in general.

Cynthia Okawara, Academic Advisor, Yifan Sun, Manager of International Education/China Specialist, and myself  put together a three-part presentation consisting of the following outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
As a result of “riding” in the “International Express”

•You will be introduced to the members of the International Education Office.
•You will gain understanding of students particularly representing from China.
•You will gain understanding of your own culture and how it influences the way we view and interact with people.

Overall, we felt that the training was well received.

As we will have a different set of presenters for Friday, 28th, I can’t guarantee whether the content will remain the same.
