Events and News

Hey folks, I hope all is well. I’m writing from Beijing, China ready to take on the day.  Samira, Bo and I just arrived late yesterday afternoon.  We actually saw a former student on the plane on the way to Shanghai!  We are 15 hours ahead of you, and yes, I can now read the future.  It looks good by the way!

At the end of last week, I was at the WACTC presidents meeting. It was very productive and informative.  We discussed our capital projects process for requesting funds, the OFM concern, and the new CTC workgroup formed to improve processes throughout the system, amongst several other items.  Dr, Cauce from UW was present as was a previous leader from IE – Paul Rucker!  It was great meeting with him and chatting about the “old days”.

Our first set of meetings in Shanghai were really productive.  We met with colleagues from Education First (EF) and North America International School (NAIS) to thank them for their support of Shoreline Community College International Programs, and to brainstorm potential future collaborations!  In addition to the important connections we are making with our overseas colleagues, I also enjoyed also learning more about Shanghai and sampling some local cuisine.  One thing I really enjoyed was trying black tofu!  I didn’t realize black soybeans existed, and it was so good.  I am also using this anecdote as a test to see if people are still reading these intros lol- have any of you had black tofu? Have you heard of it before? Let me know!

Hope you all have a great week!

Cheers,

Jack

Guided Pathways:

Thank you all for the warm responses to the introduction to our five Guided Pathways priorities this year. Both Instructional and Advising faculty are already hard at work to build the systems we need to support our amazing Shoreline students!

Speaking of our amazing Shoreline students, Guided Pathways, along with our Title III-Strengthening Institutions grant, sponsors Shoreline’s Peer Support Program. We are looking forward to welcoming our new Peer Support Specialist, who will be overseeing our Student Ambassadors and our First Year Peer Mentors. In addition to the key peer support roles, we’re piloting three additional peer support initiatives this year:

  • We are supporting a pilot program that embeds a peer tutor in CHEM 121. This is an exciting step in creating just-in-time academic interventions in our gateway courses!
  • We are sponsoring the work of several peer mentors who will be embedded in our athletic teams. This is an important step in bringing support to students where they are – in this case, on our hard-working athletic teams!
  • And we have been training our 2024-25 Student Ambassadors to be part of our FOSS Welcome Desk team. This is a new duty for our Student Ambassadors, and so far, they are rocking it! A big shout-out to Kyrsha Goodwin for leading this initiative!

We’re very excited to support students helping students (and to contribute to Goal B4 of Shoreline’s Equity-Centered Strategic plan 😊).

Cheers,

Belle and the Guided Pathways Core Team

TSS Updates:

TSS would like to remind everyone of the very useful password management tool “LastPass” that is available for all Shoreline faculty and staff.  Email invites were sent out to all users with the LastPass codes in August and we are pleased to see a large number of recipients have signed on to use LastPass so far.  For anyone who is still interested but has not yet had the opportunity to set up their account, LastPass will be sending reminder invite emails to those who haven’t signed up yet starting on Monday, October 14th. For those who have signed up to use LastPass but may not have had a chance to fully utilize it, a LastPass article with tools and resources on the software can be found here.

As we have encountered devastating storms here in the US and approach election time, it’s crucial to stay vigilant against potential scams. Cybercriminals often exploit these events by sending fraudulent emails and social media messages with malicious links or attachments. Here are some tips to protect yourself:

  • Be cautious with emails that have hurricane or election-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks.
  • Verify the authenticity of social media pleas, texts, or door-to-door solicitations related to severe weather events or election information.
  • Ensure any hurricane-related guidance comes from trusted sources like local officials, FEMA, or Ready.gov.
  • For election-related information, rely on official sources such as government websites and verified news outlets.

Stay safe and informed!

Through the Lens – Student Artist Reception 10/17/24

SCC emerging artists and Seattle non-profits collaborate!

Join us for an Artist Reception featuring food, drinks, music, art!

  • Date: Thursday 10/17/24
  • Time: 4:00-6:00pm
  • Location: 1000 Building, Art Gallery

Documentary Photography coursework, taught by faculty member Lauren Greathouse at Shoreline Community College, focuses on the culmination of an entire quarter of visual storytelling and service to the community. These Shoreline student artists spent an entire quarter working in collaboration with a non-profit of their choosing within the Seattle area, merging art and agency through the selection of images on display.

Wasp Ground Nest Between Bldg. 2900 & Bldg. 3000

Dear Campus Community,

A wasp ground nest has been found on the main campus walkway between Building 2900 and Building 3000. The nest is in the ground under the railing on the east side of the path by the 3000 building. Signage has been placed around the area warning of the presence of the nest. Our external contractor, Western Exterminators, is scheduled to neutralize the nest tomorrow, Thursday, October 10th. Use of alternate routes is advised in the interim as there have been multiple reports of being stung while walking through the area. While the neutralization of nests is not our preferred option at any time, these nests pose a hazard to the safety of members of our community.

This is a photo showing the walkway near where the wasp nest is

Employees that have individual concerns regarding work impact can contact Human Resources at hr@shoreline.edu
