Campus Security Officer Dhirendra ‘Dan’ Kumar – Memorial in P.U.B.

“Dear Colleagues and Campus Community,

As many of you have learned, Shoreline Community College Campus Security Officer Dan Kumar passed away on while on duty, following a medical emergency, January 3rd, Monday evening. Dan was not only a well-respected employee around the college but a valued and treasured member of Safety & Security office. Enough cannot be said about Dan, in regard to the caring person he was, the love that he continually spoke of for his family, or the dedication he showed as a public servant. We are eternally grateful for having the opportunity to have worked with and known Dan, he will be missed dearly.

A memorial has been set up inside of Bldg. 9000 (PUB) that can be viewed through the window of Room 9202. There will also be a book left for you to leave messages to Dan or his family if you wish to do so. The book will be given to Dan’s family when the memorial is taken down on Friday, January 14th.

I appreciate the support that the College has shown for Dan and our office. I would continue to ask that you limit all calls, emails, and office visits to business items only so that Safety & Security can continue to ensure prompt response to campus needs.

Respectfully,

Gregory Cranson

Director │ Department of Safety & Security

Campus Updates- All Staff (01/05/22)

Hi Campus Community,

Here are this week’s updates!

RETURN TO CAMPUS/COVID-19

  • Winter 2022 classes are in-person, hybrid, and online and will begin as planned on Monday, January 10, 2022.
  • All services are now available on campus.  Classified staff, as well as admin exempt staff, are required to work on campus a minimum of 3 days/week. Welcome back to those staff who have been working remotely since the beginning of the pandemic!
  • New in-person or on-campus students are required to attest to their vaccination status or claim a valid medical or religious exemption by January 20, 2022, to avoid getting a hold put on their registration account. All new employees are required to verify their vaccination status or attest to an eligible exemption.
  • All students, employees, and visitors must wear face masks indoors on campus, regardless of vaccination status. Wearing a well-fitting and high-quality mask is as important as ever with Omicron; please review King County’s Department of Health blog for tips on masking. If you or a student forget your mask, they are available at ASK ME stations and meet CDC guidelines
  • Continue diligence with hand hygiene. For classified staff who are newly back working on campus, hand sanitizer has been distributed to your office area.
  • Disinfecting wipes and dispensers are being distributed to computer and piano labs so users can clean keyboards (not computer screens), as they would like.  In addition, employees are welcome to request wipes be distributed to their individual offices by submitting a Facilities work order. This effort is in response to requests, but also remember that per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of getting infected by COVID-19 from contact with surfaces or objects is generally considered to be low.

If you are otherwise healthy with mild symptoms and cannot find testing availability, you should presume that you have COVID-19 and self-isolate according to current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines

  • The vaccine clinic started back up on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, and is now in the Quiet Dining Room in the PUB. Walk-ins are available for boosters for ages 16 and older.  Boosters for ages 12-15 are not available at this time.
  • We are closely monitoring the changing conditions of the pandemic and continue to discuss the latest information at the Communicable Disease Team (CDT) and Executive Team (ET).
  • See the COVID-19 Updates site for more information. Questions? Email covidsupervisor@shoreline.edu or call 206-495-7744 during regular College business hours.

Sudden Loss of A Dear Colleague

Dear Campus Colleagues,

With his family’s permission, it is with great sadness that I share the passing of classified staff member Dhirendra “Dan” Kumar as of Monday evening. As a long-term employee of the Safety & Security office, Dan was not only a well-liked and respected employee but also a truly valued member of the Security team in his roles as Shuttle Bus driver and Security Officer.

There will be a memorial photo of Dan setup in the 2nd floor of the PUB building within the next few days, and you are invited to share any cards or messaging to HR for delivery to Dan’s family.

The sudden loss of a colleague can be challenging.  The Employee Assistance Program for Washington State provides resources and support for employees experiencing grief or loss.  The EAP can be reached by phone at 1-877-313-4455, or by email at eap-secure-email@des.wa.gov.   You are encouraged to utilize this resource or our HR office for support needed related to the loss of our dear colleague Dan.

Thank you,

Steve Hanson
