Awaiting the Presidential Election Results

Dear Colleague,

Yesterday, we witnessed a historic outpouring of civic engagement as millions of people’s votes began to be counted in our local and national elections. While so many of us anxiously await the final results of the presidential election, it is important to remember that longer wait times for results indicate our democracy is working. We know that it is important to allow election officials to take the time they need to count every vote.

In an already stressful time, not yet knowing the outcome of the election may bring additional anxiety into our lives. As we wait to learn more about the results, here are some post-election self-care tips to help you during this time:

  • Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings
  • Identify what is not in your ability to control
  • Attend to the things in your ability to control
  • Set boundaries around social media and news consumption
  • Minimize interactions that are stressful
  • Seek out and use supportive resources
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Be physically active
  • Get rest

As always, employees seeking emotional or mental support may access resources through the state Employee Assistance Program (877-313-4455) and students may access services at the Counseling Center (206-546-4594).

Whatever the final outcome of the presidential election is, we know some people may be left with feelings of anxiety, fatigue, grief, or even cynicism. Whatever you’re feeling, know that you are not alone. Give yourself and others an extra dose of compassion as we make our way forward together.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.

Changes in the Office of Students, Equity & Success

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to notify you that Dr. Marisa Herrera has announced leaving her position as Vice President for Students, Equity & Success, effective today, Monday, November 2.

Given the current and forecasted future economic climate, the Vice President for Students, Equity & Success position will not be filled. Instead, some organizational shifts will take place to ensure the important work within the division continues seamlessly.

As of today, the departments in Students, Equity & Success will transition to the Office of Student Learning. Derek Levy, Dean of Student Success, and Lisa Malik, Dean of Access & Advising, and Sarah Pearce, Executive Assistant, will now report directly to Vice President Phillip King. During this transition period, Steve Eskridge, Director of Athletics, will report to Dean Levy.

Bringing all the student success and student learning areas together under one larger group will allow for stronger linkages between our strategic initiatives for Guided Pathways, Opportunity Gaps, and Strategic Enrollment Management. Many employees will recall that this is an organizational structure the College has had in the past, and Vice President King has experience leading both student learning and student success teams at other colleges.

Additionally, the Executive Team will continue to move forward with the plans outlined in the College’s budget reduction proposal to create a new diversity, equity, and inclusion-focused (DEI) position to advance our campus-wide DEI work. I will meet with the DEI Leadership Team and the Inclusive Excellence Steering Committee to discuss ways to support the important efforts they have begun moving forward this year.

I am deeply appreciative of Dr. Herrera’s work over the last three years at Shoreline and I would personally like to wish her the best of success in all future endeavors.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
