BREATHE events for Wed., Dec. 2

Our finals week pre-funk –
BREATHE – kicks off Wed., Dec. 2 with Sports & Yoga and College Dogs! The events scheduled for Wed., Dec. 2 are as follows:

10:30 am – 1:30 pm – Volleyball in Main Gym
11:00 am – 2:00 pm – Indoor Soccer in 3014
12:35 – 1:25 pm – Yoga in 3025
12:30 – 1:30 pm – College Dogs in PUB Lobby

We ask you to encourage your students to take a break and participate in any of the BREATHE activities offered December 2 – 4, 2015. New this quarter, we have a passport system – so pick up a passport at any activity, attend at least four activities and receive a prize at Counseling Services.

…and guess what – Shoreline Community College employees are encouraged to participate – so make sure you BREATHE too!

That’s right, BREATHE is now three days, with the majority of activities occurring on Thurs., December 3! Activities include:

-College Dogs in the PUB on Wednesday, December 2
-Step by Step Advising Workshop on Wednesday, December 2 at 12:30 pm in Room 1301
-Recreational activities at the Gymnasium ALL. THREE. DAYS!
-Healthy snacks, arts & crafts, study skills handouts and FREE massage at Counseling Services on Thursday, December 3
-A nature walk on Thursday, December 3
-Adopt and paint a pet rock on Thursday, December 3
-Various activities in the PUB to include games, the famous stress wall, ukuleles, an opportunity to sign up for Shoreline’s Community Read, and henna painting on Thursday, December 3
-Karaoke on Friday, December 4

Advising & Counseling Honors World AIDS Day, Tues., Dec. 1

Tues., Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, an opportunity for people to work actively and collaboratively with partners around the world to raise awareness about HIV and help us move closer to the goal of an AIDS-free generation. This year’s theme, “The Time to Act Is Now,” calls us to act with urgency to implement the latest high-impact, evidence-based HIV prevention strategies” (CDC 2015).

Please pick up your  free RED ribbon at the Advising and Counseling Department, Room 5229 to support HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.  Also please encourage your students to pick up a RED ribbon.

Approximately 2 million new cases of HIV in 2014 world wide.

Approximately 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States, and 1 in 8 don’t know it.

15 million people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) as of March 2015.

An estimated 1.2 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2014.

39 million people worldwide have died of AIDS-related causes since the epidemic began.

HIV/AIDS Prevention
“There’s no vaccine to prevent HIV infection and no cure for AIDS. But it’s possible to protect yourself and others from infection. That means educating yourself about HIV and avoiding any behavior that allows HIV-infected fluids — blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk — into your body” (Mayo Clinic 2015, Lifelong AIDS Alliance 2015, CDC 2015).

Registration is right around the corner, join us in supporting our current and new students in preparing for Winter Quarter! Encourage students to attend one of theAdvising Day activities, utilize Advising drop-in hours, or schedule an appointment with their Advisor prior to registration week so that they are informed and ready for next quarter. Please share these important dates and information with your students.

Time to start preparing for Winter Quarter before registration begins next week. Come talk with an Advisor to review your Educational Plan, create a schedule through reviewing next quarters course offerings, get questions answered about pre-requisites, and determine YOUR REGISTRATION DATE.

EXPERIENCE SHORELINE – Information Sessions for Prospective Students
Prospective students meet with Advising staff to learn about the admission process, types of financial aid, degrees and certificates offered, have their questions answered, and have the opportunity to take a tour of the campus.

Nov. 16 – 20
REGISTRATION BEGINS!
Current student registration begins this week. Students are encouraged to meet with an Advisor and/or review their Educational Plan and this quarter’s course offerings in preparation for registration. During Advising Day students can determine their registration date with the onsite and online Advisors.

Nov. 23
NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION
New students registrations begins on November 23rd. Students are encouraged to meet with an Advisor to create an Educational Plan and review course offerings prior to registering; students can schedule individual appointments or attend the Thursday Experience Shoreline Information Sessions.
