Campus Alert: Incident Update 10/21/22

Dear Campus Community,

This message is in follow-up to the earlier RAVE and email alert shared regarding an early morning incident on campus.

At approximately 6:11 a.m. today, a student resident was involved in an altercation with Campus Security and the King County Sheriff’s Office. The incident spilled out of Bldg. 7000 and continued near the King County Metro bus stops on campus resulting in damage to 2 Campus Security vehicles and minor injuries to both Campus Security and Sheriff’s Deputies. The student resident has been arrested and transported to a medical facility for medical evaluation.

As shared in the initial update, there is no ongoing threat to campus and the incident is resolved. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Campus Security Officer David Banik and Campus Security Officer Karl Hicks for their prompt response and action to this incident, which ensured a quick resolution in the protection of campus.

This incident highlights the escalating need on campus for additional security resources as the number of incidents grows in response to changing regional dynamics. The college will continue to analyze and make improvements where possible to ensure continued safety and security for the college community.

The College has begun a multi-faceted investigation into this incident and will continue to engage in active discussions with regard to additional support or resources in response. The College will keep the campus informed as new recommendations are identified.

Campus Updates 10/20/22

EVENTS AND NEWS

Good afternoon all,

This will be a short message from me as it’s been a crazy week! I wanted to remind everyone about the VP DEI candidates who are here today (10/20) and tomorrow (10/21). This is such an important hire for us, I am really looking forward to getting to know our candidates. I hope to see you at the forums.

I wanted to thank everyone who came to the Community Check-In last week. It was great seeing you (here or virtually) for camaraderie and discussion around areas for improvement. I did want to follow-up on a question that came up about positions and our grounds area. To confirm, we have two positions available right now. One is a full-time position and the other is hourly.

The big event this week for all of us was of course our accreditation visit last week. We should see a summary tomorrow from our accreditation representatives. To remind you, the commission won’t decide until January 2023. We will keep you posted on that as well.

Hope the rest of your week goes well!

Faculty and Staff Active Shooter Response Training – Presented by the King County Sheriff’s Office

Dear Colleagues,

On Wednesday, November 9th from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm in the Main Dining Room, members of the King County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a CRASE training seminar (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events). The training will speak to the history of these events, the trends that they have observed, speak about past events, and provide you with tips should you ever find yourself in one of these situations.

Please note, this topic is one that could elicit intense emotions due to the subject matter.

With space limited in the Main Dining Room, please RSVP by completing the Formstack linked below as soon as possible. Should this event fill up, I will work with the King County Sheriff’s Office to schedule another session sometime this spring.

Announcement, Passing of Dina Kovarik

Dear colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I must share with you that our wonderful colleague, Dina Kovarik passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022. Dina, as a faculty member in the Biology and Biotechnology program for the past eight years, contributed immensely to improving the program and supporting our students to reach their goals. She was the driving force for the development and growth of Project Biotech (a series of High School Biotech summer camps) which has become a transformative experience for so many young students. As many of you know, Dina and I taught together in the Biotech Program for 3 years, including co-teaching Molecular Biology and Immunology. I feel fortunate to have worked with her and experienced firsthand the dedication and care she had for students and the positive energy she brought to any room, even as she was dealing with multiple physical ailments. I will miss having Dina as a colleague tremendously. As I get information from Dina’s family, I will share it with you.

Some of you may have known Dina for a while, while others are just getting to know her.  The death of a person impacts people in many ways.   This is a tremendous loss that may deeply impact students in her classes as well as fellow college staff. For those of you needing additional support please know that the college has resources to assist.  Employees may access services and support at any time through the Employee Assistance Program at 877-313-4455.

Several faculty have come together to support and ensure her courses continue.

For students, we are messaging them now so that they know about this issue, and we are providing them with resources.

  • If you are experiencing distress related to this, please reach out to the Counseling Center for support. Member(s) of our Counseling Center staff will be on-hand for class today at 1:00 pm.
  • In addition, for emergency counseling, referral, or assistance 24 hours/day and 7-days/week, please call:
  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline | 800-273-8255
  • King County: Crisis Connections (Crisis Line) | 866-427-4747
  • Snohomish County: Volunteers of America Care Crisis Response Services (Crisis Line) | 800-584-3578

Please take care and contact me if you have any additional questions.
